At the risk of appearing divided(Lord cover this conversation in grace), I would share that this is not my opinion but the feeling and intent from the Lord according to His word. The key to knowing the church in today’s chaotic situation is knowing the ground of the church; the Lord Jesus spoke concerning the universal church in Matt. 16:18, “I will build My church”, and later He spoke of the local church (Matt. 18:17). We all realize that the situation among the believers today related to the matter of the church is in complete chaos, and the main factor of this chaos is not knowing the ground of the church. Most believers know and believe in the universal church - the Body of Christ, but there’s much confusion, problems, and misunderstandings concerning the ground of the church. Whether a person is in the church in reality and practicality has everything to do with recognizing the ground of the church. Yes, all the believers on earth are part of the Body of Christ, the universal church, and they are also in the church in the city where they live, but whether or not a believer is actually and practically in the church life in that city depends on whether he sees the ground of the church. When we speak of “the ground of the church” we need to know that there’s a difference between the ground (the site, the location) and the foundation of the church. In 1 Cor. 1:2 Paul says, “To the church of God which is in Corinth” - here he recognizes the ground of the church, which is the locality of Corinth. Then, in 1 Cor. 3:10-11, Paul said, “as a wise master builder I have laid a foundation…another foundation no one is able to lay besides that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” - here he speaks of the foundation of the church, which is Christ. The Baptists' are a great example of not being on the ground. They stand so firmly in baptism. But one day baptism will no longer exist. When we reduced the church to it's organic and original condition without doctrine and opinions (also described as heresy in the Greek) and traditions, there is just Christ. I look at it this way, the Lord is married to the church not to Baptists or Catholics or Evangelicals. Take away all forms and names and ways and there is simply the church which is a golden lampstand in that city. Revelation 2 shows us that forgetting to love the Lord in our service and living is the primary and exclusive reason the church in Ephesus lost its lampstand. Their standing became other works, not loving God. We all can say we love God, because he first loved us, but if we love this precious person, would we not hide behind Him as our husband? We have the practice of taking the husbands name as the wife's name. The Lord wants us to take His name. Sorry this was long and I hope you were able to get through this. This is so dear to me because in my spirit I felt a lack in denomination. What was missing was the ground of the church. One last verse that I appreciate concerning the church in Philadelphia in Revelation 3. They had a little power, kept His word, and did not deny His name. "I know your works; behold, I have put before you an opened door which no one can shut, because you have a little power and have kept My word and have not denied My name." (Revelation 3:8) At the time of the writing of Revelation, the matter of the 7 churches in chapters 2&3 were foretelling prophecy that had not come to pass and took over a millennia to take place.

Also, here is a bit of history. In Greek, Philadelphia means brotherly love. As a sign, the church in Philadelphia prefigures the proper church life recovered by the brothers who were raised up by the Lord in England in the early part of the nineteenth century. Just as the reformed church, prefigured by the church in Sardis, was a reaction to the apostate Catholic Church, prefigured by the church in Thyatira, so the church of brotherly love is a reaction to the dead reformed church. This reaction will continue as an anti-testimony to both apostate Catholicism and degraded Protestantism until the Lord comes back. You might enjoy reading the history of the Moravians in Herenhut back in the mid 1700s. As well as the history of the Plymouth Brethren and John Nelson Darby. Darby has such enlightening and life giving ministry that has been built upon through the years.

In verse 8 the Lord also said that the church in Philadelphia did not deny His name. Since the brothers were raised up in England in the early part of the eighteenth century, they have not taken any name other than the name of the Lord. The word is the Lord’s expression, and the name is the Lord Himself. The apostate church has deviated from the Lord’s word and become heretical. The reformed church, though recovered to the Lord’s word to some extent, has denied the Lord’s name by denominating herself with many other names, such as Lutheran, Wesleyan, Anglican, Presbyterian, and Baptist. The recovered(recovered to Sola scriptura) church has not only returned to the Lord’s word in a full way, but has also abandoned all names other than that of the Lord Jesus Christ. The recovered church belongs to the Lord absolutely, having nothing to do with any denominations (any names). To deviate from the Lord’s Word is apostasy, and to denominate the church with any name other than the Lord’s is spiritual fornication. The church as the chaste virgin espoused to Christ (2 Cor. 11:2) should not have any name other than her husband’s. All other names are an abomination in the eyes of God.
