Styrofoam is mostly air and xylene (a dimethyl aromatic alkane) and acetone (acetone is a safe ketone solvent) both have the same affects on styrofoam and they just take out of the air bubbles out of the styrofoam and they won’t corrode your skin this is from a chemist.

Xylene really is deadly especially if you breath in the fumes

@@StevePhillips I'm not certain about how acutely deadly, but yes it definitely had me confused and feeling sick to my stomach after spending a day painting an enormous wave pool with Xylene-based paint. Painting smaller areas it didn't seem to affect me at all.

@@SirDirk79 I hope you will not have a severe adverse reaction. The effects of Xylene are not always sudden, but I have heard of apprentice spray painters that have had a bad effect after a single exposure and had to leave the industry. This is why we see spray painters wearing full outfits, gloves, and breathing apparatus. Xylene can have long term severe adverse reaction that might leave you breathless, not able to walk or a need to walk at snail’s pace, that maybe very painful. The industry does know it is cancer causing. In all fairness warnings are always written on the tin or plastic container. When I took painting and decorating course many years ago. Spray painting was included in the course those days. Cellulose is another dangerous paint thinner. I don’t know what the law is these days in UK but to use cellulose or Xylene based car paint you needed to be licenced. The industry I noted over a decade ago was only granted licence to sell those cellulose or Xylene based paints until old stock is finished, but it is still being sold today.

Why did he just pour a gallon of xylene down the drain? WTF kind of chemist is this person? He should be fired from that job. All you had to was put several tablespoons of it in a glass and then add the whole foam to it. It would keep eating it up. Sheeeeesh!!!!

Gallon new leaked out can empty, was in refrigerator without food but breathing it constantly. Home freaking depot, so likely other solvents as well, impure no wonder feel better went went out, I’m finished! Slept near it found dead young 🐀 know from labs was at foot of bed! Bad enough given low dose chemotherapeutic for disease turned out didn’t have. No autoimmune disorder and treatment was straight to cell killer? Didn’t sue, never do.

Look on the bottom of the container and it should tell you...only a very few plastics are resilient to aromatics. I've only seen them stored in glass or metal cans.

Not all plastics are the same. Biggest groups are polyethylene(PE), polypropylene(PP), pvc. You can find these in high density (HD) or low density (LD). That's what you see on plastic packagings etc. (LDPE, HDPP etc...)
