A smart guy,a good F1 driver who never made it to the wheel of a reliable car and an Indy 500 winner. Hats off !

I went to school with him at NDI during the early 1970's....8th & 9th grade. Very likeable person who could also run cross country and shoot a basketball.

His English always had a slight accent and his Italian is very good. His son was born in Rome. Eddie's dad owned a few health spa/gyms in Italy back in the 1970s. He never really got a good car in F1. The Renault was good but when your teammate is French - you are #2.

He will always be an Indy 500 champion and that is a big accomplishment.

@@Yyyyyy5 His win at Indy would make a great movie. The team was broke. They had a small Menard sponsorship and was able to get Rachel's Potato Chips, small company. Eddie qualifies 17th which is not where Indy winners qualify. First lap a guy spins in front of Eddie, he locks them up, does not spin, flat spots the tires then pits. He was in 23rd then and supposedly was 32nd at one point. Crew man says go on a later pit but cheif mechanic clicked on radio and Eddie's stops at last millisecond to avoid fuel hose being ripped out. Eddie wins. They tear down the engine after the race and it was falling apart. Probably would have not made another lap. Eddie said they had to do well to save the team because they were out of money. Amazing story.

Old Ed grew up and began to race in Italy. When he was 15, he won the Italian kart championship. I'm from Italy, and I can say he almost doesn't have american accent when speaks Italian. His son, Eddie Cheever the 3rd, has italian citizenship
