Does the 0.6 lb of magnesium sulfate per gallon make a solution of a N:S ratio of 10:6? I want to make sure that I'm maximizing the phenethyl isothiocyanate.

Can you direct me to any research on the air root requirements for various plants? The statement “don’t refill more than a few centimeters” doesn’t match my experience with passive hydroponics. “Leave 1/3 of the root system above the air line” works for me, but goes against all of the advice I can find

Excellent idea - saved me $25.00 + for a factory made float. Made two units, one for the bird bath and one for the fountain.

When looking at the space needed it's probably also important to remember that the people who would grow in bags in a greehouse also probably wouldn't be growing in a field as an alternative but rather in raised beds or grow bags in that same greenhouse requiring the same aisle space.

When my Mother takes up the potato plants(a few days ago) in order to get "New potatoes/"Fresh" potatoes for Swedish "mid summer"(A holiday when this usually happens allover) i use to Re-Plant them with all these Mini spuds on in order to get another harvest later in the summer as i think that it's simply stupid to just let them wilt away when they have so much left to give.

Hi Dr. Kratky, I am a young farmer from the Philippines and a am a big fan of your work. I design systems that are based on your methods; that is, vertical and electricity free. I wish to improve and develop my design to address food shortages and drought problems in my region. I'd like to share my design with you and am hoping to hear your thoughts about it. Would you be open to that? if I could have a way to message you, like an email address, that would be wonderful! Thank you so much for taking the time to read! Cheers, from the Philippines
@@growkratky5558 Thank you so much for your response! Will send you an email within a day or two. Have a blessed week ahead!

Why not let a few plants go to seeds. ?
@chrisharrell2449Ай бұрын
Doc You mentioned you didn't know why the roots grow up the stem. I think I can help you there. That's so when they're in the river. and say a storm comes. and parts of the plant will break loose. So if they've got roots up the stem, they can then flow downstream, get anchored somewhere further on downstream and carry on growing. That's the way I grow my own watercress in an ebb and flow system. I just break bits off and replace them into another container. So I never really apart from the first time grow them from seeds. And in the past. I've actually bought watercress from the shop. and just submerge that and it throws roots.

Curious why the outermost pot needs to be any larger / taller than the 5 cm depth of solution that it carries. I would put pot in pot in a big tub and use that as outermost pot for multiple of pot in pots. The outermost post is a saving in this arrangement. This also makes it possible to have pot in pot technique to become pot in grow bag if a grow bag is used. The use of grow bag will be more tolerant to pot bursting.

Unless if I missed it in this video or the previous part 1, couldn’t this be made to be height variable by drilling a series of holes up the pipe? That way you could pass the wire through and secure it at whatever height hole for your application. This would allow for any heigh within 2” to 24+”. It would require more pipe than necessary on the low end but would make up for that in versatility in my opinion.

When following these designs learn from my mistakes! Don’t use widely available schedule 40 PVC as 15 mL centrifuge tubes do not fit. I believe schedule 30 by was used in the video which may be a bit harder to find. 1 inch PEXb could serve as a substitute if there is concern for PVC safety, but you sacrifice some rigidity and cost. You could use external crimping or clamping to fix the dripper in place with PEX. 0.5 gph pressure compensating emitters specifications vary by brand, but need higher pressure to function. At an approximate 2 foot pressure differential mine did not flow at all. Still learning as I go!

@kevinfishingandcasting7 ай бұрын
Hi Dr. Kratky I have calculated the N value in the solution you are using and it happens to be about 105 mg/L. Isn't that too low for lettuce. Correct me if I am wrong but moat lettuce requires about 150 mg/L of N to produce a satisfactory head of about 175-250grams. There are many commercial farms that runs N at180-200 mg/L.

I was thinking about valve for higher pressires based on bending the tube and creating a crease to stop the flow. If you attach polystyrine float to the end of the tube and fix part of the tube rigidly, float will create a crease in the tube and stop the flow. Your thoughts?
@growkratky55587 ай бұрын
I hope you will try your method out. By the way, we commonly folded over the ends of polyethylene irrigation tubing and tied them with wire and then didn't need end plugs for the tubing, so yes, a creased tubing can stop water flow.

I utilized variations of the pot in pot in pot concept this spring with some tomato and pepper plants I started. It worked out fabulously. The plants loved it and so did I because it made the pots much lighter and easier to handle than if they had been completely filled with growing medium. Plus of course it was nice to save costs on growing medium. Many thanks for the information.
