I don't understand why people still spread these old tales. Many soils already have sand in them. There's a thing called sandy clay. So there's no problem adding sand at all. I'm starting to experiment with this too.

We preserve our chilli peppers sometimes by pickling in apple cider vinegar (not my favourite way but practical and the left over vinegar is so beautiful that it’s worth it for that alone) freezing in vacuum packs (which is pretty good), by slow drying in a low oven (for flakes and seasoning powders) or by roasting, then jarring and topping up with sizzling hot olive oil (favourite, it keeps for over a year and is so good). Our favourite preserving chilli peppers are Lemon Drop, Pot Black, Satan’s Kiss and Padron.. though we eat most of our Padron Tapas style by grilling or flash roasting them with a sprinkle of sea salt, in the manner of the Spanish people. We only grow for ourselves, only grow a fraction of the varieties that you produce annually so I’m learning from you, thanks👍
@ADifferentChickFarmandOrchard3 ай бұрын
I have never grown Pot Black ot Satan's Kiss
@hisroyalblueness3 ай бұрын
@@ADifferentChickFarmandOrchard pot Black is a UK developed chilli pepper that performs particularly well in a sunny spot outside. It’s a low bush that produces hundreds of small black shiny fruit up to 2 inches long. They eat well in black, with a perfumed flavour and a low to mid heat, but will further ripen to red and take on more heat before summer’s end. Satan’s kiss is just one name for a small round red pepper that is grown commercially in Italy and sold under the brand name Pepper Dew when de-seeded and preserved in a sweet brine, often stuffed with soft cheese. They’re not as hot as their name suggests and I like them with a little heat so I don’t de-seed them, I just roast them whole, pack them tight into hot jars and preserve them in hot olive oil.

Yes, we will grow all of that and plus some field tomatoes. Certified organic local tomatoes are very popular around here. We also homestead and can salsa, tomatoes, tomato sauce, and more fir ourselves. As well we prepare almost all of our meals at home which takes a lot of fresh tomatoes.

Hi Steve, your tomato advice is much appreciated. 😂I grow Black Krim too, I’m in Shropshire in the UK (zone 8) and buy many of my tomato seeds from a company called Seeds Of Italy. They provide seeds by Franchi Seeds’ who specialise in Italian seeds and their version of Black Krim is titled Noir De Crimea (Black Crimean or Black Krim). An absolute gem of a fruit but, as an heirloom, prone to late blight. Mine were devastated in early September last year as the UK suffered its wettest autumn on record). I’m going to graft them onto submarine rootstock this year. It’s my first grafting experiment. I know that improved rootstock won’t eradicate blight but I’m hoping that the extra vigour provided by specialist rootstock will help the plants resist the blight and any other ailments. Here’s hoping eh?! My favourite Franchi tomato is the Costoluto Di Parma, which produces a firm fleshed mostly red but with occasional dappled green tomato that is of a medium beefsteak size, with many deep creases. It’s luscious sliced into thin horizontal slices, drizzled with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkled lightly with a pinch of salt or chopped rough and cooked up with garlic and onion for canning for winter and spring. A very good allrounder really. Highly recommended and, as Franchi only sell seeds in large quantities, I’d be happy to post you some to try if you could point me to an address. Thanks again for all your advice 👍

Do you grow any peppers?
@hisroyalblueness4 ай бұрын
@@ADifferentChickFarmandOrchard Hi Steve, Yes I do grow peppers. Not too many as I only have an unheated poly tunnel as yet (I hope to build a heated greenhouse this summer). This year I'm growing some peppers from seed that I bought from Chilli Chump (CC) - Scotch Bonnet Yellow, Piri Piri, Spaghetti, Bishops Crown, Jalapeno. Also KS Lingria & KS Sweet Queen that CC gave me as a free sample, and sweet peppers Ramiro Red and California Wonder. Also growing my old favourites Pot Black & Lemon Drop, from last years seed, and over-wintering two Scotch Bonnet Red and a Birds Eye chilli that didn't manage to ripen fruit last year due our short summer combined with me only having an unheated poly tunnel at the moment. I'm hoping that starting the year as adults will help them set fruit very early so that I get a crop from them this year. This is certainly more peppers varieties than I've grown in any previous year, but I know that you grow maybe 10x that number of varieties . .

I really enjoyed your patter, thank you. Picked up some good advice from you 👍 btw you don’t need specialist grow lights for seedlings because they thrive under any cool white light source. I use cheap 2ft x 2ft 48W LED ceiling panel lights - made in China and bought on eBay for circa £16 each including taxes and delivery. Specialist grow lights are generally designed to be one light source that supports a plant through its full grow cycle, from vegetative growth to flowering & fruiting. Plants need different parts of the light spectrum for different phases of growth so, to achieve that, they 19:15 put out a wide spectrum of light that suits both phases. However, seedlings are only in vegetative growth phase so they only need the blue end of the scale. The red spectrum light (for flowering & fruiting) that is included in specialist grow lights, is just electricity going to waste unless you’re flowering or fruiting. You should try a simple cool white led panel against grow lights. For the ‘vegetive phase’ the cool white led panels will perform better on a comparative per Watt basis, because more of their output is effective for that phase. The grow light will of course perform much better in the flower and fruit phase but that’s of no matter because you use the sun for that phase anyhow. Thanks again - keep up the good work😊

How did you determine the/amount of additive/you added to soil prior to planting. Use mfgr label?? Dennis
@ADifferentChickFarmandOrchard5 ай бұрын
We try to add around 1 in of compost to the soil in our greenhouses each year. Also,you want to look at how much organic matter is in your soil, and that can easily be done by looking at the composition of your soil. We don't want it all to be fine particles that would compact easily in our clay soil. When it come to fertilizer that is different, we follow the recommendations from the supplier, which is typically on the back of the bag. We are planning on doing a video on soil health very soon!
