Yes, the bearing grease is very important and is often overlooked. The primary role of lubrication is to reduce friction between bearing components and help dissipate heat. Lubrication also serves as a vital barrier of protection against contaminants. Lubricants also help bearings endure different loads and act as a stabilizing agent for bearing structures. Lubrication is one of the most important factors impacting the operation and longevity of bearings, which is why it is important to inspect and monitor bearing function on a regular basis.

but surely the machine itself will have many bearings within it due to the high amount of moving parts. which leads to the age old question... what came first, the machine, or the bearing?

Great question! It is speculated that rudimentary roller bearings were used as far back as ancient Egypt. We have evidence of roller bearings being used by Romans over 2,000 years ago. Leonardo da Vinci drew ball bearings around 1500. The first practical caged-roller bearing was invented in the 1740s by horologist John Harrison, and the first patent on ball bearings was awarded to Philip Vaughan in 1794. Because of this historic evidence, we can be confident that the bearings came first!

There's a cartoon showing a caveman hammering a rock into a stone wheel. That's what you are if using a hammer and not using a press. Correct tool for the job and procedure makes for a reliable repair/replacement.

NTN uses a wide variety of grease in our bearings. The type of grease used is dependent on the type of bearing, its intended use, and the conditions it will be subjected to, among other factors.

Heating aluminum wheel hub with torch will ease installation of cups .Not acceptable practice to hammer cup onto cup .Install 5/16-18 tap into battery powered drill and clean hubcap holes . Blow holes out with air . Install new bolts with anti-seize .Coat both side of hubcap gasket with anti-seize , gasket will remove easily in the future .

Hi Paul, That is a good question. The best way to ensure you aren’t purchasing counterfeit NTN bearings is to purchase from an authorized NTN distributor. Our NTN websites offer ways to search for our authorized distributors. We aggressively pursue the import/export/sale of counterfeit bearings around the world, but counterfeit bearings can often be purchased from legitimate looking websites that turn out to be fake. @@NTNBearings Can you explain the package labeling thing for people to understand? Are all bearings supposed to arrive with some such QR code on the packaging? I recently bought a bunch of NSK bearings off of Amazon. NSK also says they do the secure QR code thing. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07TDDDV8T/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 There was no QR code on the packaging. The inner race had "Poland" engraved on the inner race and "China" molded into the grease seal. I suspect counterfeit. What about automotive wheel bearings from the auto parts stores? Should I expect to see a QR code with them as well?

We know bearings make many things like the world go around we just use our bearing indoors in precision machine spindle bearings, they are great and fun to install and machine parts with for us, but it is fun because we have figured the ones we utilize, out. Thank you for sharing (very nice company stay on the ball) the efforts these bearings, more demands then we a re currently utilizing just high speed RPM here, that makes the bearings amazing. Lance & Patrick.

a lot easier if you take off the brake drum first as it is a outboard drum, pre lube the bearings with oil before installing in the hub and torquing them

Im having a hard time finding any information on NTN bearing ET-CRI-0846 can you help? i can't seem to find any information in any of the NTN catalogs on that bearing.

NTN appears to have the best quality of finished goods and the highest standard of manufacturing too. I'm sure hoping that I can become a part of their team at their Anderson, Indiana location! I'm fascinated by each and every aspect of their manufacturing processes and I'm already wanting to learn how to do every single job that they have there. Guess you could say that I've got something to prove; as I typically do learn quickly! NTN has been around for 100 years now. You just don't make it that far for nothing.
