I've spent time caving. Once when I was perfectly safe had an attack of claustrophobia. I'd heard stories of the terror of cavers stuck unable to move. Miners faced this every day. What they faced before unions is just crazy. Many of these miners were Catholic and using the morpheme to commit suicide was a mortal sin. Imagine going to work every day bring a little can of death, just in case.
