You may be surprised that one of the two comments is written by Russian. :) I deliberately wrote in Russian to attract attention. You're explaining very important things in welding, but without any illustrations. These two graphs of current-voltage dependence and that's all! Not everyone will easily understand by ear what is being said. I recalled my Chinese students. 😅 They don't understand written English, let alone spoken English. They don't understand anything by ear. And how would you like to teach them? I have to create a bunch of illustrations, accompanying them with inscriptions. It’s easier for me, I teach organic chemistry and biochemistry at the university. Welding (SMAW) is just my hobby. This is helpful when you own private house.

What should be done if the weld symbol doesn't specify the groove angle? At what degree should the plate be removed for preparation?
@BuenomusPrime
@BuenomusPrime 24 күн бұрын
This is a great question. You will need to address this with your supervisor or the engineer who made the drawing; in my experience it's common for things to be left off the print simply because someone forgot. Never assume what angle your plate(s) should be beveled at, because that could be the breaking point of the project.

What is meaned by basic coated electrode
@BuenomusPrime
@BuenomusPrime 24 күн бұрын
Great question. So there are typically two types of electrodes, coated and uncoated. Uncoated electrodes are like those used in GMAW (MIG). Coated electrodes have a Flux coating; a layer of Flux that covers the electrode around its circumference.

why there is different types of rods?
@BuenomusPrime
@BuenomusPrime 24 күн бұрын
Great question. There are different types of electrodes to meet the needs of various projects. The needs could be things like different kinds of metal, the position that the project needs to be welded in, and how strong the weld needs to be. It would be amazing to have "universal" welding electrodes, but we're not there just yet, at least not with SMAW.

Iam learning alot about welding symbols I didn't know before, thanks brother, but if you do your on centers or center to center as you call it, begining of the first weld to the beginning of the next weld it's the same as center to center but less math. And allot easier, start of the first weld to the start of the second weld 2 inches of however many inches.
@BuenomusPrime
@BuenomusPrime 24 күн бұрын
I'm glad to hear that, and thank you for watching! You have a good point. I just teach it the way it makes sense to me; I've also been told there's a gray area to the center-to- center method that involves craters, but I haven't seen it on paper anywhere so I don't bring it up but it's always in the back of my mind, and why I keep explaining it the way I do.

@@BuenomusPrime is just a way to do on center literally without math other than reading a tape measure, put your tape at the beginning of your first weld and pull the tape out and mark it every two inches or what ever your on center is. Sand that's the beginning of every weld. Thats how they do it in rough framing construction setting studs too build a building.

I saw your reply about the next part not being finished. Sucks to be those who have been waiting, ive only just begun waiting today lol jk jk 😂. Anyway, hey if possible could you make a video of how flat, concave, and convex welds can be achieved? Im talking about typical settings, travel speed, angle of tip, and anything related. I weld using innershield flux, MIG, and occasionally dual shield flux. You are an amazing teacher. I cant say anything more than what has been said in the comments. Really, you are amazing

Hi! Appreciate the work you put into this video. Need to weld two plates together at 90 degrees as close as possible. Didn’t know about the back-stepping method, so will try this. Plates are 15 mm (slightly less than 5/8 in). Don’t need “full penetration”, think 3-4 mm on each side is plenty (3/32 - 1/8 in). They shall be L-shaped when done, planning a fillet on the inner side and bevel one plate on the outer side. Or better bevel both plates so I get a 90 degree groove? Any tips and tricks are welcome 🤗 Also, I’ll have a stiffener plate at about 2/3 of the 20 inch length. Plan to tack up all and then start welding. The stiffener should keep it in place if I apply the back stepping method. I hope 😮

Hi, good question. Lots to type here so hang with me :D Okay so I'm imagining the plates flat on a table, forming an "L" when viewed from the side. The vertical plate is what I would bevel; apply a 30 degree bevel on the outer side. Thinking about distortion, the more heat and weld metal we deposit on one or both sides is going to open us up for more distortion. So bevel just one, not both. I'd also bump up the size of the fillet on the inner side. Just thinking about the thickness of the plates, I'd try to have 1/4 inch. Hope this helps!

Measuring from the centers of intermittent welds always seemed over-complicated to me... Is there a reason that it can't be measured from start of weld to start of weld? It would be the same dimension...(?)
@BuenomusPrime
@BuenomusPrime 12 күн бұрын
This is a great question. Another viewer made a comment about this as well. In theory, you can measure from the start of your weld, but there's gray area in that. I've always been taught to specifically measure from center to center. The gray area that I mentioned is in regard to crater size. I've been told, but have not seen it in writing yet, that some inspectors do/do not take crater size into consideration for weld length; but like I said it's something I've been told, I haven't experienced this myself so I can't say for sure. So, I just continue to keep it to center-to-center.

I thought a straight (non break) arrow means it can be either plate arrow (top) side with first example. If it breaks left or right, then it means the actual plate its pointing to. No?
