Surely, this is just out as near to perfection as it's posible to get. The unhurried timing, just hanging on to some notes for a fraction of a secomd before smoothly going on to the next shos an interpretation of the music way beyond her years. Like so many others. this performance brings tears to my eyes every time I watch . I'm left with a comforting feeling that the world hasn't quite gone totally mad -- Not yet. ---- Oh -- And that smile. --- Beautiful, just beautiful.

If you want to understand how good this is, check out the performance on YT that Hilary Hahn gave of Bruch #1 seven years ago with the FrankFurt Radio Symphony orchestra under Andrés Orozco-Estrada. No disrespect to Hilary - she is a great violinist (obviously) - but in comparison to the extraordinary standards set here, her Finale is really quite ragged.

I ordered my copies of the cd direct from Pentatone, thinking they would be delivered at the end of July. But to my great and joyous surprise they were delivered today!!! The cd is very beautifully produced, with four lovely photos of Chloe. The audio is excellent, as are the SSO. Chloe's performance of the Paganini, the Butterfly Lovers, and Sunshine over Tashkent, is out of this world!

You can listen to the whole performance to your heart's content for a month - not just of the cadenza, but of the whole concerto - by paying $2 to become a member of the SSO's channel. The performance is intensely lyrical and revelatory. The Sauret cadenza is performed as if it were Ernst's Last Rose (performed by Midori). Amazingly, it is shown to be extremely beautiful and very moving!

I come back frequently to listen to this piece and always marvel at what the musician has accomplished. The 2024 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition has just ended with 12 superb finalists who gave it their all to present their best interpretations of Ballade. I didn’t know until recently that this competition was known previously as the Ysaye Competition, being renamed after his death, so it was fitting that all the participants be called upon to do an Ysaye composition. Ballade is perhaps not the most difficult of the six sonatas even though all sonatas are indeed difficult, but it reflects Ysaye’s deep affection and respect for the lyricism, creativity and consummate skill of his friend and dedicatee, George Enescu. I found a quote from Ysaye in one of the older published articles that he had “let his imagination run wild” when he composed this piece. I took that to mean that the musician has the discretion and freedom to paint on a large or small musical canvas without going astray of the composer’s intention, i.e. a wide range of interpretations are valid so long as the musician can retain the composition’s integrity as a ballad. Maxim Vengerov’s interpretation which might be characterized as starting in a claustrophobic space before finally successfully scaling a height seems to be one that a number of musicians, including many at this recent competition, have adopted. I enjoyed every interpretation by the 12 finalists and I appreciated the effort made. Ballade repeatedly exposes the soloist in its demands - orchestral sound in some parts followed by unforgiving technical virtuosity in others. It can be exhausting. Chloe paints on a huge musical canvas, eliciting a wide variety of emotions from the listener in the process. She does not stop until the last bow stroke, and then at least for me, I saw her completed work.

0:50/0:51 ... Chloe's bow is very wobbly on the string there. In fact, it happens many times. I wonder what bow she's using? I'll be looking up what sort of violin (and hopefully bow[s]) she plays on. It looks and sounds a bit like a J.B. Guad violin to me. If I had the money, I would sponsor her and find a bow that's a better match for her playing style and violin she's playing on. There's obviously nothing wrong with her technique but in my opinion this violin and bow isn't quite right for her. She plays very ferociously and I think a Guarneri Del Gesu would suit her well and perhaps a very stiff bow by Peccatte or maybe Fonclause or Pierre Simon. Even a modern bow made to her specifications could be the perfect match for her (and much less expensive)!

P.S. Sartory is of course a great maker, but he made some duds in his time which are basically bin-worthy... perhaps the one she's using here is one of them but all she could afford? [If it's her own property and not on loan].
