Got me stumped. I looked up all the covers on Wiki, but none matched.

I wasn't born before this music record was made but I like quite a number of classic oldies like this. It show how easy, care free and enjoyable life was then with fewer things to worry about.

This carries the classic sound of its era with nice harmony and instrumentation. I had to go quite a ways to find what scant information I could about this group: a psychedelic rock band, formed in 1968. Only two 45 RPM records were released: this one and 'The Sun Is A Laughing Child.'

Congrats on your first transfer upload, really well done and sounds great. I'll give this record a pass seeing as it's a promo but wow was parlophone the squarest of the square in this era.
@CWLrecords2 ай бұрын
Thanks! And yeah, apart from the big ones such as the Beatles, Hollies, Billy J etc, I'd say Parlophone was pretty average until the late 60s. A lot of the cool stuff from this time was actually on Columbia, until it was sort of decided as a strictly middle-of-the-road pop outlet by around 1967.

I don’t think the real Johnny Crawford voice got that deep in a few years. After all there could be more than one singer named Johnny Crawford
@CWLrecords3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I too suspected it was a different Johnny Crawford although after hearing him sing Angelica in 1967 there is a similarity. I'm honestly not sure, Johnny Crawford isn't that unusual of a name either

I think this label , Embassy , specialized in featuring undistinguished artist's cover versions of the big hits . Surprisingly , some are as good or even better than the originals .
I’ve heard the original version by The Crystals, but this one is new to me, even for an oldie!
@CWLrecords4 ай бұрын
The Starlings was one of a few names used by a group of very prolific session singers including Ray Pilgrim and Mike Redway, I believe the singer on this one is Jean Campbell? They recorded some pretty decent covers of popular songs in the 50s and early 60s for Woolworths on this Embassy label
@user-wi6sh6vh8u4 ай бұрын
Campbell’s obviously the lead singer on this recording.

Be tricky to trace an actual original, but its certainly an early version of this 1912 song. The singer is Jack Charman (1887-1953), who 'covered' numerous popular songs, both on stage & on record. He recorded on many labels under his own name & around 100 pseuds! Good that you've got the speed right, many of these Winners, especially early ones, were recorded somewhat fast.
@CWLrecords5 ай бұрын
Hey, good to hear from you again! By "original", I am referring to this particular pairing, as the same recording (matrix 636) was re-released (possibly the following year) as Winner #2702, with "Hello, Who's Your Lady Friend? (matrix 1054). This pairing (#2321) has "Always Take A Girl Named Daisy" on the reverse, which has matrix 637, soon to be uploaded. 100 pseudonyms is crazy! As for the speed, it's just a stroke of luck until I acquire a turntable with variable speed
@tiga41805 ай бұрын
@@CWLrecords I wasn't aware Winner did that, but if they found something more marketable, it would make sense to revise the pairing. As for pseuds, Jack Charman was so prolific, but not a star (though a highly competent cover artist) that companies who hired him frequently would endeavour to make it look as if they'd found new talent, by allocating pseuds. There were also many reissue labels, which would use pseuds to distance themselves from the original recorder. Finally, pseuds could be an ideal tax evasion ploy! Often, a recording artist would have little or no control of the pseuds he/she was allocated. As for speed, you're lucky here, as Winners, esp. early ones, vary a lot. Be nice if you could find a player with variable speed, like a Lenco deck, but some KZfaqrs use video makers' software that can vary the speed. Sticking mainly to gramophones, I've never needed such advanced tech!

Effettivamente, cosa piuttosto insolita per un disco a 45 giri, soprattutto considerando il volume e la qualità di cui dispone

This must have been a hell of a gift for a 10 year old in the early 80s. The disco sound is a bit outdated but these must have been costly to order anyway. Very cool find you have here.
@CWLrecords5 ай бұрын
I'd imagine they probably just pre-recorded a bunch of common names and people just bought them if they happened to have that name, like those keychain stands at gift shops.. According to Discogs they made 40 boys' names and 40 girls' names, each name with a different catalogue number from 1982 to 1983. Although I imagine they were probably on sale for quite some time even if the style got outdated, but nonetheless the performance is decent and it's still a pretty cool gift!
