There's a very neat little detail about the plasma rifle I'd like to point out: the funny accordion part. To me, they could be interpreted as electromagnetic coils that accelerate the plasma bolt, just like how coilguns and particle accelerators use coils to accelerate metal or particles

If i had to make a guess why Sega decided to use something seemingly as overkill as FERAM it might have been because they already were planning on using a lock on cartridge to united Sonic 3 with is second half Sonic and knuckles. And as such was persistent storage that wouldn't need a battery in form of FERAM used to make this task easier to design as Sonic and knuckles would have to read and write to Sonic 3 every time it saves. Or in other words they future proved Sonic 3 for Sonic and knuckles. As to why some chips bricked? I think you might be right that it was just a few bad chips lacking in quality due to being the first consumer version ever.

Good point! The lock-on technology might have made it difficult to design a reliable battery type save feature.

So like a ball of plasma cased in a magnetic bullet casing? You'd probably end up melting the casing and turning it into a molten chunk of metal, which could either melt inside or outside the gun. There is actually a weapon being tested called MAHEM that would shoot molten pieces of metal which're propelled by electromagnetic fields created from explosions.
@crabohato4954
@crabohato4954 27 күн бұрын
Even if you manage to keep the casing from melting into molten metal, the casing would have to be brittle enough to break upon contact yet still tough enough to endure the heat of the plasma. You'd need like magnets made out of room temp superconductors, which do not exist currently. Also, would the plasma inside the casing be created inside the gun, or would it already exist preheated? Creating the plasma inside or outside the gun either way may end up damaging the casing, upping the chances of an accudental plasma explosion

Great video! I think that you may be slightly off in your calculations from the get go as plasma has the tendency to expand. A soccer ball sized projectile, especially in toroid form can be formed at 1 -> 2 kJ. I have been experimenting with such a plasma accelerator for a few years off and on now and I hope to have good success with my most recent design.

My non working 9002 came back to life after replacing all of the surface mounted electrolytic capacitors. (Maybe 15 dollars?) I bought a box that had a large variety. The voltage rating on them was higher than the ones in there but that didn’t matter. Had to watch some videos for the proper soldering techniques as they are quite small.

Doom was the first game i played on a PC. I had a 486 CPU, and soldered a 25 meter long zero modem cable for the RS232 port to connect two computers - no LAN available then, no one possessed an expansion card for that, and what is this strange L-A-N even good for anyways? - to play against each other. Thats unforgotten. The controls of this game, WASD + mouse are still in use today the same way as then. I cant play on the PS or the Xbox, since they do not offer this kind of controls. I am just too used to WASD.

Hello! With such limited information, all I can do is give you some general advice on where to start. Since nothing lights up, I would start by examining the main power supply. Make sure that you get the correct dc voltages, that is powering the other boards. If you get no supply voltage to the other boards, or if some of the voltage rails are missing, there is most likely something wrong with the power supply. Please note that you will be dealing with dangerous voltages. If you do not have any pervious experience with electronics repairs, I would advice you to seek assistance from someone with more experience.

@@SunandWeather thanks for the reply back!! Believe me I will seek a experienced shop if I can find one in Houston. So I connected everything back up and everything works when I click the power button except the amp itself? I think its 2 resistors because 2 of them reading shows good the other 2 showing negative reading. If you have an email address I could send you the ones I’m talking about and the service manual I found online. Thanks again. Btw…I checked them with the unit unplugged😅 in case you were wondering.

Hi. I have the same exact pedal, but when fuzz is turned on it has a very acentuated volume drop. The internal pot it at max position. Any ideia what issue it could be ? Thanks
@SunandWeather
@SunandWeather 4 ай бұрын
Hi, there are a lot of different failures that could cause this issue, so it is hard to pinpoint without troubleshooting. My first guess would be the electrolytic capacitors, since they tend to go bad eventually, but that is just a wild guess.

@ricardopereira9262 4 ай бұрын
@@SunandWeather Thanks ! I will check that. I also read somewhere that the volume trimpot can be changed to a high value, and that is kinda common to see that volume drop. Maybe weird tolerance trimpots that dont work as they should

@@ricardopereira9262 That is a good point. If the unit has been modified or repaired with non-compatible parts, it will make the troubleshooting a lot trickier.

@@SunandWeather It seems all stock. But I read that its a common issue. So or some parts are failing (As you said) or those stock trimpots are not that spec consistent and some units were never able to reach proper fuzz volume

These are nice amplifiers to listen to but the design is horrendous. Cost cutting at its worst. Definitely not designed with serviceability in mind as theres no access to the board where heat is most likely to cause dry joints. No discrete output stage and too much integrated unobtanium.

Excellent video. I have done this repair with minimal theoretical knowledge - just a basic understanding of 'these are bad, so change them.' I am curious to see if the electrolytics can be replaced with MLCC caps, as the repair has once again failed due to age. These things still sound awesome, and I'm glad people like you help give them new life!
@SunandWeather
@SunandWeather 6 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot! Whether or not an electrolytic capacitor can be replaced with an MLCC depends on the circuit. I would say that in most cases electrolytic capacitors are used when high capacitance is required because they are cheaper or because MLCCs with the desired value does not exist, but in some cases the properties of the electrolytic capacitors are specifically required for a circuit to operate correctly.

my lights work, but the dimmer does not once I go down from full, they turn off. would the fix be the same?
@SunandWeather
@SunandWeather 7 ай бұрын
A shorted capacitor, in the position presented in the video, would not allow the lights to turn on, unless there are something else wrong with the circuit as well. Although, if the lights are dim even when the dial is turned all the way up, it could be that the values of any, or several, of the passive components has drifted in value, causing the control circuit to charge more slowly. There is no way for me to say with certainty what the problem with Your unit is, but I would say it is unlikely that You are facing a similar failure as the one presented in the video.

Very interesting! An actual glass switch and a real Fat Man detonator assembly (made by Raytheon) can be seen at the Bradbury Science Museum in Los Alamos, New Mexico. The switch was pre-existing and was initially invented for flash photography in night time aerial reconnaissance. The museum shows the beaches of D-Day being photographed at night in this way. Seeing the complex detonator assembly alone is worth a trip to Los Alamos. Its an incredible device!! I was just there 2 weeks ago.
