I do have experience with beaver floats and I have some findings that might help you. 1st off your trap sits too low. You need to have your float balanced so that the trap spring eyes are 1/2 out of the water. If the trap is too low, the beaver have a tendency to try and crawl over it. I’d suggest adding flotation to the trap spring slot and make clips that are on top of the top 2x4 for the trap. 2nd, your slots are too deep as well as too low. You need to have the trap completely disengage from the float when fired. I use 1/2” fiberglas rerod for stabilizers with a 1” pvc sleeve in the float. This allows for total float movement as the water column rises and falls. Use a cable for a the tether to shore. Make sure your float is in deep enough water so that a beaver cannot stand in bottom and work your scent from the side. If they can stand alongside your float they will pull down on your side boards and get to your scent. Floats are great if designed and fine tuned correctly, I love’em!! You will not find them on my KZfaq channel because i quit making beaver trapping videos.

Thank you I appreciate the advice lots of good things the only one I can use is half out of water in Iowa we have to be totally submerged with a 330, thinking about maybe adding a step on a few with a #5 or 850 leg hold on a vertical drown rod. Have you ever made any like that ?

Yes, in MI we can have 1/2 of 330 above water but in regard to using a foothold on a float. I’ve thought about it by adding a platform/step forcing the beaver to drop and put weight on it’s front feet. I also gave thought to find a way to use the stabilizer rod as a drowning rod. I feel it could be done and make using a foothold trap on a float efficient. A-frame beaver floats work too well to ignore IMHO!

I caught beaver with floats this spring while water levels were rising 3’+ in 48hrs and made catches as the river was on the fall as well! You just need to be able to tend the traps and retrieve the beaver safely. No video Have I seen where the trapper showed their floats working as I just described.

Danny you are correct, every thing always works right out of the box, I MIGHT have to give that a try. Thank you for the thought.

I’ve never trapped a beaver but these seem efficient enough.
