How was the Bible or the Christian New Testament Canon compiled? I thought it was inspired by the holy spirit as we are made to believe. This is why most of us treat it as a Holy Book but upon researching Ans: It was compiled based on this criterion 1. Apostolic authorship. Because the people during that time accepted only things that were linked to the disciple's apostles or close relatives of the apostles they named the the first four Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to put some form of credibility. Bible scholars say the original manuscripts have no authors, it was written anonymously. Note anonymous doesn't mean it’s false. It means it was written by authors who didn't put their names on their writing 2. General Acceptance. During the early Church, many Christian books circulated. Eg Gospel of Thomas, Gospel of Mary etc. They only accepted those that were geographically accepted by the many. 3.Theological Acceptance. They chose books that were matched to their already existing theology. This is where you need to ask yourself, which theology they believed and used. Most of the books were based on the Theological acceptance. Later in the fourth century, a consensus was made amongst Christians as to which Books should be in the Christian New Testament Canon by Bishop Athanasius of Alexandria. The Bible wasn't compiled by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit as we Christians think. It was more of a debate so the winning teams decided on the books.
