Hey 👋 Software engineering is just another word for the developer, so don't worry about it. The amount of money you can get mainly depends on the market demand in your location. So I would recommend you research how many web dev positions you have there and the average salary for them.

Hey 👋 I’ve been living in Amsterdam for almost one year, moved here at the end of June 2023. I have 10+ years of experience as an iOS developer. I was not targeting a concrete location when searching for a job; it was more company-related. As I can see, there are many big companies here hiring, but besides, the IT market is not so huge here. And the salary differs a lot between the top companies and the others. So, I would recommend you target only top companies and spend some time preparing for big tech interviews. Otherwise, your entire salary will be spent just on taxes, rent, and food 🥲

@@AshAsoyan yeah got you, I'm focused on Frontend right now, working with ReactJS and TypeScript, do you maybe have advice on how to stand out as an applicant and what kind of projects would be really good to show off my skills so I have best chances of getting companies interested in me?

If we talk about top companies, it's more important how you write your resume rather than what projects you worked on 🙂 Also, try to get a referral to apply through the internal system, which will increase your chances (you can use LinkedIn for it). And, of course, you need to spend at least a few months on solid preparation for big tech interviews (check my first videos on this channel for more context).

@@AshAsoyan thank you I will, but I think your projects play a big part in candidate selection, without them my resume would'd stand out as much. The biggest issue is I don't have work experience as a developer but I've been learning frontend development for a bit more than 2 years, I went to 2 coding bootcamps (both were free, I was selected for 1 because my coding skills were fitting for it) and I push myself to learn new things and build more complex stuff all the time. I understand that resume is very important but in my situation the projects also play a huge part because lack of experience so I have to show off my knowledge somehow :)

@AshAsoyan Ай бұрын
Hey Bradley 👋 Thanks for your comment! My journey as an iOS developer started spontaneously because I initially joined my first company as a C# developer. You can check my video “How I Became a Software Engineer” for more details. Are you familiar with general programming concepts already? If the answer is yes, I can recommend a few resources to learn Swift: • Free tutorials from Apple - developer.apple.com/tutorials/develop-in-swift • Free Coursera courses: www.coursera.org/courses?query=swift About searching for an intern position: it’s hard to recommend anything, regardless of location and the market situation. But my general advice will be to apply for any open positions you find and try to get the first job as soon as possible. Because the programming is all about developing real products, not going through tutorials, and you will learn a lot during your first year. And after that year, if you don’t like the company, it will be much easier for you to find another job because you will already have a production work experience 👌

Hey 👋 It’s hard to earn a lot here, even with a software engineer salary. Amsterdam is a costly city, and you will pay €2k+ just for rent. At Uber, I work at the Platform team, and we focus more on long-term fundamental projects, that will affect the whole company. So I don't have short-term strict deadlines and much stress about it. Hey bro! It's a great question, thanks for it! Actually, I watched a few videos about this on the weekend. It's a big topic. Let me know if you want a video about this, but the main point is that it's how your brain hardware works. And unfortunately, there is no way to change it. You are alright, you do not lack willpower. And most people 2 of 3 are the same, and I'm one of them. If you have this in quick access, you will constantly be distracted by something. If you want to focus, one of the strategies is to create a kind of environment around you to exclude all possible distractions like your phone. Don't feel guilty about your distraction, bro, and try to improve your environment!

You have a point, now that i think of it, and as I watch your video, 2nd monitor could be part of the problem, I just cant sit in front of PC without having something like tv show running in a background, ill have to think about this topic a lot more, also video of your thoughts would be great. I mean as you said, willpower is not the issue, at the end of the day I'm getting everything done, I'm never late, but I think I can be much more efficient@@AshAsoyan
@AshAsoyan
@AshAsoyan 6 ай бұрын
The fact that you finish all the work despite the distractions says more about your responsibility, not willpower. As I previously mentioned, focusing on work without an instant reward is challenging for people like us cause of the brain hardware. So the best way for us to be more productive is to try to exclude all possible distractions around us 😉 I will record a video about this, and I think it could be beneficial to understand how this mechanism works instead of using short-term motivational pumping.

Hey mate! It's hard to answer without an additional context cause I don't know your situation. If we talk in general, I recommend you focus on the field of programming that interests you most. Also, don't forget that learning something new is always challenging, and it's normal that your brain doesn't like it and prefers some more enjoyable things. Try to set some small daily goals, like learning programming for 1 hour straight, and don't be distracted by anything else during this hour. You can focus for 1 hour, even if you don't like it. And after one month, you will have 30+ hours of learned programming behind your back!
