So it's basically a zwerchaw from the bind?
@fencersguild-guildamgladia248514 күн бұрын
Hi. Well, you could very well use the principle of "duplieren" - doubling in a sequence of two Zwerch häuwe. In this case it is in the cathegory of Windhaw in the bind. Both strikes go with long edge here. Good point though. Thanks for watching 👉

You should make a KZfaq series out of all the throws found in this book. I have an English translation but it's not always obvious even from that what the author is talking about. The demonstration you gave of the few throws you did was extremely helpful.

Do you have any specific examples of boxers and bare knuckle boxers having trouble in their counterpart’s arenas? My impression from the general data around gloved vs ungloved boxing was that it DOESN’T significantly change the form of successful boxing. Case in point, Ngannou vs Fury.

What do you consider as "significantly"?
@lio88jian4 ай бұрын
@@fencersguild-guildamgladia2485 Differences in guards, targeting, types of strikes, etc. The common refrain is that bareknuckle boxers of the past kept their hands low, chambering from the hip/waist and used less hooks because the boney face was less of a target without gloves on to protect the fists and the low chamber was better for protecting the solar plexus. Fighters in BKFC look more like WBC boxers in that they still consistently target the face with hooks and don't commit their hands to protecting their solar plexus.

Me being from the Netherlands, I always wondered if there are any historical notable swordsmen or fencers from the Netherlands?
@fencersguild-guildamgladia24855 ай бұрын
Sure there is a list of names. Especially late 16th. century onwards. Thiebolt attended the famous tournament in Netherlands for instance. Starting from Nicolas Peter the great wrestler going on further. Antwerpen, Amsterdam, there we can find big names in rapier and later smallsword. Kevin will surely pull out a bunch of names.

what do you think is the main difference between medieval german wrestling to judo and jiu jitsu? is there any aspects that makes them distinguished or is it very familiar in any way?
@fencersguild-guildamgladia24857 ай бұрын
Hi, that is a bit wider answer. It is more a matter of our modern perspective we tend to use as a filter to aproach the historical and already vanished forms of combat. But in simplicity, our human nature does not differ much regarding our human kind (European, Asian, African etc...) Therefore in principle some of our social outcomes are very close, some differs. The closer to an ultimate reality the closer in its form. The farther the more more different...

Like the sword play and the intensity of it , Is this all about closing and striking the head? Please get rid of the feders it takes away from the realism of the fight.

Hello dear Ronald. At first, thank you for watching us and writing a commentary. I have also looked at your channel in reward, and please do not get me wrong, but I am not sure if we are on the same page here. In order to avoid hypocrisy, its obvious our activity follows different goals and methods to get there. To get rid of "feders" would be difficult for us, since we do not use neither the word feder, nor anything related to it. You can do a little research on this topic. As it is written in the description of our channel, we are central European based international company following our traditional form of historical fencing. So once again thanks for being with us. I wish you successfull days full of joy with your students. We are also very happy if our channel helps other people to get some knowledge about traditional form of fencing. Have a great one!
@ronaldcourtain-tharp82837 ай бұрын
Thank you for your timely response. Perhaps I am just an old traditionalist; that one should train with the "tools of the trade" as opposed to the training sword( that I refer too as feders) that you a clearly using. If you are training in longsword or any other weapon type then it should be that weapon (blunted of course). Each variation of said weapon will act slightly different when executing the desired technique. This in turn allows the practitioner to learn what traits they desire most from there weapon and in turn increases there skill and knowledge. I am in no way dismissing the skill and training that you and other students are learning and enjoy many of your posted videos. Just that you are doing yourself ( and the various organizations HEMA, ARMAA, guilds, ect.) a disservice by not actively using proper styled sword in your sparring and tournaments. Again perhaps I am just an old Knight ( yes, I do hold two knighthoods) shouting into the wind. @@fencersguild-guildamgladia2485

Hi again. You can read Henry Walker's "What is feder" article. Its well done. We issued some results of our humble research on the term Feder years back. The term related to some sword form is strictly modern/american creation. No relevance to any historical swords. So, we do use swords based on historical finds. We call them training swords or Paratenschwerter. Congrats to your knighthood. Being apointed twice is surely a unique achievement. Still it is a bit irrelevant to our previous exchange. We wish you great time in training of historical or any other fencing. Who knows, we may meet personally some day. We ll be surely looking forward to it. With hope you did not find my way of communication offending, I wish you a great day.
@mysticmarblesАй бұрын
Super late peanut gallery, but it feels like you guys are talking past each other a bit. Fencersguild- Whatever you personally choose to call them, he's talking about the training swords commonly known as feders. I think you got off into the weeds on terminology and didn't make your point about goals clear, judging by his reaction. Ronald-they are trying to recreate historic fencing schools, rather than trying to simulate literal fighting with sharps. These fencing schools used feders and certain customs (no thrusts) that allowed them to practice more safely. It's a bit like if you were trying to recreate 1920s style boxing with the old style leather gloves and someone comes along says why don't you use bare fists and kicks to better simulate a street fight. It's just not what they are trying to recreate.
@ronaldcourtain-tharp82837 ай бұрын
Nice movements folks. I enjoyed the rather dancing movements of the system. The bind counter-bind is interesting. Is this just about striking the head? The entire body is left exposed and open to attack. Also, I seen a lot of flat strikes is this for safety? This seems more like a training exercise then a tourney-there's no intent. Even in slow sparring there where strikes are not actively landed there still should be intent. I've been swordfighting now for almost 35+ yrs and been running a school for 15yrs (Academy of European Arms) and still regularly spar without gear without any serious injuries.Many of our sparring session get quite intensive. With that said I do also wear gear, fencing mask, gloves, maybe a jack when necessary or the fight is really ramping up and tricks are being thrown. We also don't use feders or any of their light weight off shoots (please HEMA stop using these stupid things, it's a cop out). Sparring without any gear helps give the realism and finality to the session. helps you concentrate on defense rather then strictly offense (attacking) and helps eliminate the idea of "going for broke" just to score the point; which I see so often in Hema tournaments now days. These guys are certainly trying to stay defensive and protect themselves. Just try and show more intent and move with conviction in the sparring.

What's the difference between this and a duplieren? Less contact between the blades and a different starting position? Because the principle seems almost identical to a duplieren to me.
@fencersguild-guildamgladia248511 ай бұрын
You are right. Duplieren is also sort of Windhaw, but as its name indicates, it is a principle how to double strike while being in the bind. Nevertheless Windhaw is a simple principle how to execute strikes above opponents blade, with or after a bind. Duplieren belongs to Handarbeit, middle distance when we came to a bind in order to keep the bind and continue by executing a windhaw. Is it sufficient hint to distinguish between the two?

Hello from ARMA South Korean study group. Your group's approach is very similar to that of ours and your words resemble the words of our director, John Clements. We also prefer partner training & free plays without protective gears, just because of the same reasons as yours. We only use protective gears for several limited practices(i.e. training a novice who aren't capable of striking people with martial intent or when we need to practice super dangerous skills to each other). The difference is that we actually hit our opponent when sparring. Experienced fencers even fight in full power but they slow down just in a split of second before the actual hit to the partner. Then they finish the loser by cutting or gently thrusting with the tip. By this way, we are able to fight as much as historicaly. I hope you could get some insight from my opinion. Anyway, your works are great! Keep it up :)

Thank you very much for a nice comment. If you do practice in similar manner it means you re close to our authentic European martial art. We do hit each other, sometimes harder than is comfy. As someone who used to partake in “naked fencing” like this at a similar or higher intensity, this kind of stuff is behind me. I’ve had close calls with partners going both ways, but I have seen other people have REALLY close calls like getting hit in the face and missing the eyeball by millimeters. I have nothing left to prove so I will not engage in any sort of “sparring” without a mask. Call it what you will but I like my eyesight and the things I do with it including sword fighting. I will not risk it because my sparring partner had a lapse of concentration.
