What thickness steel do you use to repair the dreaded shock Towers?

16g gets pretty tough to curve but its possible. With hard bends for rigidity 18g works

I have a 2005 Saab 92x that is at 198,000 miles and I have a feeling my towers will rust through to failure in about 25-50k miles. If I had the skills you have I'd do this work, but it's not worth it to me to pay someone else to do it. It was fun watching you do this great repair!

Thanks buddy, and you are correct in the worth it or not. This is a massive job and typically can replace the car for this kind of effort. I did my own bugeye wagon a few years back, would same structure as your 92x, It was a mission and no way id have been able to afford to have someone do it without doing it myself. Which even still is a lot in special tools and time. Hope you make out alright in the next car venture

I Did an underbody overhaul to my bugeye, not as in depth as the gc but powder coated everything and new bushings. Made it feel like a new car again. Good for another 20 years now. They dont make them like the used, refreshing an old car is way cooler then buying a new one. Hope you get to do it one day

A great example of "if you need to know exactly what it'll cost, this isn't for you". Jesse did my car last summer, gave me a rough idea on cost, but this is just one of those things where you can't know the scope of work until you start cutting into the car. As he dug deeper there were more and more hidden issues and it cost nearly double the initial estimate. I still think it was a very fair price for the amount of work done, but if he had said "this should cost $X000" and I dropped the car off with $X001 in my bank account, it would've been a bad time. These jobs are huge and are not the same category as routine maintenance. Keep up the great work Jesse
@TheSubieSanctuary
@TheSubieSanctuary 10 күн бұрын
The answer now for anyone who needs to know how much to do some totally unconventional job is: if you must know, I can not help. Not that its a secret but really just impossible to gauge other then showing previous examples, results and time spent on them. Then again we know that no 2 jobs are the same. If i could afford to do it for free, just to make vids, id do it all day. Host like a lottery for who is next 😂

I never ever thought youd need to replace headers. Usually stock ones last forever and give that signature rumble. Nice sound anyways and good work as always.
@TheSubieSanctuary
@TheSubieSanctuary 11 күн бұрын
We lost some of the clips but our back flange to mid pipe was well expired. The factory header is actually equal length on the NA’s. They rumble as much as a honda. This unequal length did bring that Subaru rumble that you typically hear from the stock header turbo subaru’s

Interesting you say that, I had mentioned I have one on my 05 legacy (basically same as your outback) I also found mine was close to sway bar. However on this impreza it cleared everything just fine. I assume its the shape of the legacy/outback sway bar that is slightly different then the impreza/foresters.

Appreciate the sit down. I moved to BC from Fredericton about 10 years ago. Decent car culture in NB. Unfortunately fewer people are willing to spend what it costs to restore or rebuild. I think the trend is going to fade away more as time wears on. A car really needs to mean something to a person in order to spend what they could buying something pretty much new in comparison. There will always be the diehards that are willing to spend anything but like you said, they're not easy to find and more likely find you. You guys are making great content and staying consistent but it's a difficult battle against a saturated market. So many new channels reviewing cars and leaving it entirely to scripts written by paid writers hired on freelancer sites. All of the real content like this is being passed up for some text to voice app reading a script while drone shots of a car on a highway play in a loop. So many viewers are being lured away from real people on KZfaq and it is a continually growing problem.

Well said brother 🙏 the truth indeed. Ultimately, Ill do this until I physically can’t one day. Its my passion regardless, I do feel there will always be the people that see the passion within our shop and the work here. I do certainly expect the demand to stay up, but as you said it would be from those deeply connected to their car. If I wasn’t able to do this work myself. I honestly dont know what id do. My bugeye wagon as an example, that car means the world to me. If a car could be your best friend, thats mine 😂 it was at the end of its life 2 years back. There would have been no shop in my province that would have fixed it for me. I spent a year working on it after hours to hopefully now give it another 20 years. But the feeling of having my car back and as good as new again, Priceless. People like me in that situation, those are the people that need this and I look forward to each of them.
