So is there an updated map with this trail on it? I don’t see any mention of it on map you sent me a few yrs ago. Looking forward to riding Highlands in Sept.

Did the adventure Pick Axe Loop this year and loved everything about the journey. The ride the accomodation every thing was awesome. Going to ride the new Timber Trail next and hopefully will try many more Highland rides. The paved sections are as awesome as the offroad section. I'm hooked!!

That general area provides amazing riding opportunities for all riders - not just ADV. My wife rode a lot of those roads on her CBR. Just be careful in the blind twisities folks. Btw there may be some ATV / truck traffic on those back roads. Horses and hikers occasionally too. If you go south on 511 or through KnP, the whole area around Flower / Lavant stations is just as nice - basically double your loop

I remember taking Barryvale Road, a few clicks south of Calabogie that got me on a dirt road towards Flower Station and onwards, K&P Trail maybe. Nice but just wide enough for cars so we took some of the more difficult single track off it. If you like remoteness, try the Trans Labrador Highway from Blanc Sablon to Manic Cinq. Back then it was just over 1100 kms of gravel, but I heard it is now paved for the poseurs. When you are doing 525 kms on very loose gravel in a day, trust me, you are beat. Other good roads (that I have not driven) are the Trans Taiga and North Road off the James Bay Road. Make sure your gas tank is huge.

Thank you for mapping out this route! I've been itching to ride some back country roads! How sketchy would you say this loop is during the fall season? I'd love to organize a final ride before parking my bike for the winter!

I love seeing great videos of motorcycles on or off road. My Suzuki C-50 is good for my local roads, and I saw Royal Enfield 350`s in our small town. They`re cheap, but used Suzuki S-40`s are cheaper, lighter and more powerful. None of these are made for off-road, yet, with the right tires, they could serve my purposes.

Cruisers can take most of those roads when dry. My wife rode most of those (except KnP part) on a CBR. KnP sections may be a bit too gnarly with no suspension when wet. On big ADV the flooded sections may be "fun" too - I once got unsaddled by a big(er) boulder in a water crossing lol

Just as a heads up the northern part of the pick axe loop is completely impassable as of May 25/2023. Highly recommend staying on paugh lake road and skipping it.

I got through it on my KTM 1090 but it wasn’t fun. Took an ATV trail that met up with the GPX file. I’d recommend staying on the main logging road until it meets up with the White Mountain Shute Trail. ATV trail was mud bogged.. would recommend having someone with you in case someone gets stuck

Did you make the turn south off the atv trail to the old logging road? I started up the atv trail before realizing I was off course.

Ya exactly - had to ride the ATV trail until it met up with the GPX file. I wouldn’t do it again.. especially on a big adventure bike lol I’m curious if you can take the logging road all the way to the main road that hears back south

Are these gravel roads only open to motorcycles? Or cars/SUVs too?
@ridethehighlands
@ridethehighlands Жыл бұрын
These are all legal roads, so yes cars and SUV could technically go down them. Do you want to take them down some sections? That would be a decision for you and your car.

Just got my "Ride the Highlands" map & sticker and thanks for the sticker! Did not expect that. I'll be coming to your neck of the woods from Alberta (on my 1998 Shadow VT750 C3) not sure if I'll do the "Pick-Axe Loop"? But for sure "The Highlands Loop, Deep Valley Run, Dynamite Alley, Rideau Ridge, (not doing the Fall Loop, simple because I know when the Autumn leaves start to turn "WOW") AND last but not least will do the "Riding & Relaxation ". Then I'll be off to Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland & Labrador. Just to tell ya I have given myself three months there and back...Thanks again

Thanks vm for that, it was very enjoyable. We have a family cottage in Westmeath and often boat from Petawawa north towards Oiseau rock and Charlie/Deep river. Know my way around Barry’s Bay, Eganville, Killaloe, Red Pine Camp on Golden lake where we’ve been going for decades etc so I’ll try this route at some point.

This is going to be a great addition to your existing map and looking forward to you posting it. We have done two up on some of your routes on a KLR650 or a T100 and have rediscovered our Ontario. Found great coffee spots, great stories from locals and other riders, a hidden away winery (with wood oven pizza) that we brought back to our Glamping AirBnB (Picture king size bed in a Lawrence of Arabia tent with hot showers).
