Another big myth that non-Chinese people have about Chinese people is that Mandarin is all but one language. Linguistically, Mandarin is a huge branch, and the official language of China is a subset of the Mandarin language, called Putonghua, meaning 'common language' or Guoyu meaning 'national language'. 官方語言 means 'official language'. And in China, the official language is 漢語 meaning 'language(s) of the Han people(s)'. It may also be called 華語. 官話 refers to the Mandarin Chinese language, linguistically, referring to the whole language branch and subsets. 北京話 refers to Beijing dialect or Pekingnese. 武漢話 refers to Wuhanese. 四川話 refers to Sichuanese or maybe Szechwanese. Socially, people will just take the place name and add a 話 after it, then say the language of the place. This language has no linguistic connotation in the English sense, when people mark a difference between dialect or language. It is not based on mutual intelligibility, or lack thereof. It is just based on the place name and the language of the natives. Personally, I would say Hong Kong language is a subset of Yue Chinese language. I might also say 廣東話 with 廣東 referring to the province and 話 referring to the provincial language and all provincial dialects within the province. The Hong Kong dialect 香港話 is a bit different from the Yue Chinese dialects of Mainland China, though, because of the European colonialism. But it is similar enough to be included in the same language family called Yue Chinese language. If I ever find myself having to relocate to Hong Kong or the Guangdong province, then I would take the opportunity to learn Cantonese by language immersion rather than by app or textbooks. It's the best way to learn a language. Seriously, though, I have been to Hong Kong in a layover flight and I have picked up on quite a few vocabulary terms there. It ain't hard, especially since I can speak Putonghua. I think it also occurs with native Chinese people in China as well. My own mother was born and raised in China, but in the early years, she spent time in her grandmother's house speaking her grandmother's language. When she moved to another province in China for school, people didn't understand what she was saying or where she was from. So, my mother is a heritage speaker of a specific dialect of Northern Wu Chinese language. That's why she can understand Shanghainese to a degree, and the amount of Shanghainese she knows is based on the similarity of Shanghai dialect and her own grandmother's dialect, from a preschooler's point of view. I believe that native Chinese people who have never been overseas will behave the same way: they may NOT be able to speak their ancestral mother tongues anymore, but they understand the way the older generation talks. They may not be able to replicate the older generation's way of speaking anymore.

San Francisco has 3 elementary schools offering Cantonese immersion program. These schools are very popular amongst non-native speakers as well as ABC parents who want their children to be more proficient in the language than they are.

D. I signed the petition for saving Cantonese at Stanford, glad to see some fruit. Cantonese is spoken during the Han Dynasty, we must spread the knowledge.
Cantonese per se is almost as old as Jesus Christ. People with no culture would opt for something less historical
