You also probably don't know about the resistor in the spark plug boot that really causes a weak spark & causes a lot of the hot start issues. Check it out. Real easy to unscrew the brass retainer in the cap. Change it out for a 16 penny nail cut to size & deburred/sanded smooth. Check your spark before & after replacing that resistor. I've got a 78 & 79. 78 bought new in 78, 79 around 95. Raced a 77 in 78 to 85. Been running that nail since 78.

You make the standard mistake when starting the TT/XT 500 - any year (76-81). You are kicking it like a two stroke! You stab the kicker down & lift up immediately. These engines are designed with a ratchet release mechanism built into the kick assembly. Kick it down & lock the lever against the foot peg, it CANNOT kick back. Let it up when it's running or stops spinning. Look in the service manual/parts pictorial, if you even own one & you will see the ratchet mechanism. This is important to follow to prevent injury. Pgs 15, 16 & 17 in the original 78 owners manual is very descriptive.

I have a Yamaha SR400 from 2016, bought it with 7300kms and it already has cam wear and fcked up cam bearings. After fixing it i'm selling the bike... I thought it would be reliable but after 3000kms started to make a clacking noise and well..apparently its a rare problem from a defective cam from factory that lost some kind of metal treatment and became "smaller"...the weirdest engine problem i've ever heard on a motorcycle. 😭😭😭

My 84 XL 600R will never start cold without giving it some throttle. I'm assuming this is a carburetion issue, always starts first kick once it is warm, but is always a PITA on the first start of the day.

I got the 1981 model brand new and my older brother couldn't start it to save his life. I would get it started, explaining each step as i did it and he would get on and ride off. Later he would show up pushing it and grumbling that there was something wrong with it, and i would start it first kick. I absolutely loved that bike. 😂

Hey! Ive been interested in getting a honda XR600R (after getting my licence) for a while now but as i'm a beginner i feel like it might be a bit too much. do you have any recommendations for similar bikes that are more for beginners and that are easilly/cheaply available in the Netherlands (its sounds like you're from here) Thanks in advance!

Don't know about South Africa, but the aluminium tank was used from 1978 in North America. An engine modification in 1980 included larger cylinder head cooling fins, larger intake valve, and a revised oil seal position on the crank shaft. The 1980 U.S. model used CDI ignition, Canada retained points ignitionl, the carburettor also came with an accelerator pump, and forks had a leading axle. Have owned several over a 30-year span, a 77, 78, 80, and 81, probably the most reliable motorcycle ever, adequate both on and off road, and very forgiving when approaching its limitations.

I wish the electric start kit was more affordable. $1500 USD for an electric start is insanely pricy.

Somewhere out there is a TT500 with a set of air canister forks from a YZ250. the back had an extended aluminum swingarm with Curnutt shocks. This was my dad's bike, my sister desert raced it. Some motocross also. Looking back she must have been in incredible shape. My bikes were almost stock except for a different muffler.

My dad had the white tank dirt bike model. Nothing ever broke but it was new. The exhaust on your video, I've never seen this before. Usually we used an uppipe with a super trapp muffler. I had the black and silver enduro and the orange tank dirt bike model. The front brake is small and doesn't do much. Its a heavy bike and if you catch some air it lands with a mighty thud. Its a wheelie riding machine, I could go through all the gears. So much fun.
@bringthekickbackАй бұрын
You’re down right! From the factory it was a super reliable bike. It’s just because these bikes are used how they are supposed to for 45 years you’ll find flaws. This exhaust type was only the ‘76 model. Now a days the exhaust only already costs 1,5-2,5k

properly tuned twin carbs are easy to start and deal out great low end torque with a rocket ship top end. love the twin carbs, they are also a shorter stroke motor making them more rev happy.

Thanks my friend. IMO Yamaha is a lot easier. Biggest reason is the availability of KEDO parts.
