Not sure how long to leave the video running for the youtube stuff, mostly left this video running while going on a coffee break because I’m trying to go relatively unspoiled in to this game with a friend when it’s on sale with all the DLC… How’s the item sharing done? Do both players get to pick up the same stuff, or is it whenever player X picks up something that player Y also gets it?
@TheJeffAndDavidShow
@TheJeffAndDavidShow 14 күн бұрын
For the Seamless Co-op Mod specifically, each player sees all of the loot but needs to pick them up individually. So if someone opens a treasure chest, both players would need to pick up the item inside. Some things happen for players such as activating grace sites - as soon as one player activates one, it appears on both players' maps and can be used to warp to.

I'm not sure a game like this would even sell on anything other than nostalgia these days; this game required hours upon hours of meticulous documentation of information in order to be able to solve the puzzles and operate the mechanisms correctly. If you don't have a guide book or an online source, there's one puzzle in this game, the puzzle the whole game is essentially built around, that could take days to figure out and is impossible to brute force. Plus, back in the day, each island was it's own CD, and if you moved from one to another, you had to swap out the CD to complete the traveling... every time. I played this game a LOT, and nothing was more cathartic than beating it. Shame they replaced the actors, they all did an excellent job despite being amateurs. Oh, fun fact: the reason the surface of the water is so wonky in this game isn't because the Age is breaking down, although it is: one of the journals states that the water in the Age of Riven is teeming with micro-organisms that are apparently able to bend the surface tension of water based on the temperature; such that you can form tunnels through the lakes and ocean if the rails are heated, which is what the sub-surface glowing rings are doing. There's enough geo-thermal activity in the islands that you can see it in the rifts; that's also why most of the machinery on the islands is steam-powered.

Plenty of modern players like Outer Wilds on its own terms. I don't think the idea that they could appreciate Riven-style puzzles is that much of a stretch.

@LabTech41
@LabTech41 Ай бұрын
@@greyrook-rm3ul I remember a lot of lore from the first two games on account of how often I played them. Ages having unique features actually had a philosophical aspect to it in the story, because there were two schools of thought on the issue: that writing an Age merely connected you to a pre-existing dimension, and the idea that when you wrote an Age, you were in fact CREATING a new dimension. Atrus held to the former, while his father Gehn held to the latter, which is largely the reason why he fell to messianic delusions about essentially being a god. What's interesting is that the games themselves never definitively answer which perspective is correct, because even though Atrus and Catherine both believed the books linked to worlds that already existed, Catherine was able to 'perfect' Gehn's flawed linking books by creating a linking book that would lead to an Age that had a material that would allow them to be useful. Essentially, she wrote a book that had a MacGuffin in it, and the Age had the MacGuffin; so is it that she created an Age that had the material, or she merely linked to one that just happened to have it?

There's 2 primary puzzles, not one: The animal puzzle that opens up the way to Tay and the Fire Marble puzzle that powers the domes. There's some ancillary puzzles as well such as the music box to open up Catherine's cell. And you don't need meticulous documentation, just a sheet of paper and a pencil and you've got all you need. Having played the remake, I actually prefer the older versions of the puzzles. The new ones are a cute refresh but somewhat dumbed down IMO.
@LabTech41
@LabTech41 Ай бұрын
@@mattm5672 It's unfair to put the animal puzzle and the fire marble puzzle in the same category; that's like comparing checkers to 3D chess. I'd argue that anyone paying attention once they notice that animals are a relevant piece of information would be able to brute force at least half the solution, already coming in with a fair idea of what it would be. The fire marble puzzle involves knowing specifics on a number of data sets that you have to travel to all the islands to know. You have to know the precise coordinates of each island's book location, you have to know which island is associated with what color, and most importantly you have to know which marble NOT to slot into the grid. Bear in mind you have to get to the heart of the golden dome first to even know what information you need in the first place, and you have to know what information you're looking for, which isn't readily apparent the first time through. The animal puzzle is just shy of entirely brute forcible given enough time; it's a pain, but one could see you doing it with the animals you already know are present; the fire marble puzzle, sans the research, has more configurations than you'd have time for in your entire life to input.

A lot of the anomalies in this one versus exit 8 are a lot more obvious and overt, especially with ones like the tilting train, kinda like the devs were just experimenting with the engine. It's not about finding the anomalies, anymore, its just about seeing the anomalies. It isn't bad just... Different.
@IBlameRoadSuess

I feel like upping the graphical fidelity of this versus Exit 8 kinda makes it a more difficult experience. Exit 8 had a real clean look to it where granular details were a little easier to spot but still required you to pay close attention to the surroundings. It also had a wall with a bright yellow warning sign explaining what you were supposed to do, which this one does not appear to have. This one makes it either severely more obvious or incredibly unapparent just due to how much busier all the assets are. The post processing definitely hurts the game with youtube compression, and the spookyjumpscareman at the very start is extremely tonally different from Exit 8.
@IBlameRoadSuess
@IBlameRoadSuess Ай бұрын
Ah just got to the end, yeah the fact that it's now in Unreal Engine has Post Processing all combined together really hurts the visual style of the game. But the engine switch to UE from Unity makes sense given the whole deal with that.

Sorry, I almost always watch your videos all the way through, but this one I checked out of it halfway in, as it was just really annoying me, I think? Maybe it does make sense by the end, but it feels like it was written by an AI (or badly translated?), and bits of the game look unfinished. By the time I got to the halfway point it was actively irritating me and making me feel kinda dumb. And I say this as someone who was really interested in Lorelei and Indika from the videos you did on those. I guess this one did not click with me.

It is stupidly easy to miss things, and some of the meta-puzzles bothered me a bit when you're not used to looking for that kind of thing and there isn't an obvious indication otherwise. Like, if it were a QR code, I'd instantly know what to do - it's highly recognizable. Other sorts of things, which I'm trying to be vague about so as not to spoil, however... those don't jump out at me nearly as much - and my attempts to find tools to resolve the puzzle failed me entirely. Had to just look up the solution in that case. It _does_ do a good job of sorta forcing you into situations where you learn how to use your tools. There was an instance where I made it to a collectible, and the obvious exit seemed impossible until I gave my toolbox a once-over and tried doing stuff I hadn't thought of doing with them. Incidentally, I'm still not 100% done with the game despite playing the absolute heck out of it, so once I actually do 100% it, I'm looking forward to using my new knowledge (and notes) in a replay.

I completed Industria the next day after this recording. For better or worse, it's only about 3 hours long. It also ends on a cliffhanger or rather what would be the end of the first act in a longer story. The devs are making the sequel and put out a teaser for it (hopefully out in 2025) so thinking about this one as a long prologue (especially if played for cheap) might be the best way to look at it.
