The base water level rises. The base water level being the water level prior to the ice berg. If the water was already in the cup. And we froze a portion of it the visible water level would decrease . The base water level would be higher than the cube. The rising water level becomes a matter of perception. Are the oceans rising. Or returning to a base line state from before the water froze And began to float?

The idea that water is simply displaced by weight is an over simplification. You must account for buoyancy as well. In this case ice floats on water at about level. However icebergs (fresh water) float above the ocean (saltwater) the simple weight and mass carrying a portion below the surface. If they were to melt not only deos this change thier buoyancy it also chnages the consistency of the salt water. Causing other things to sink and perhaps melt. So yes in a controlled experiment using thw water level after the additon of ice made from similar water the water lune shouldnt change... freezing water already existing in the glass changes things a little and using a combination of fresh and salwater creates drastic change

@@StudyForceOnline thank u so much for answering and for being so kind. Oops I forgot to type the questions... A) for each 3 banks find effective semi-annual interest rate B) how much interest would you get after 3 years on a $5000 deposit made now? (Hint: use the interest calculated in A).

When a block of ice floats in water, it displaces an amount of water equal to its weight, not its volume. So, even if only half of the ice is submerged, it's still displacing enough water to balance out its entire weight. When the ice melts, it turns into water that exactly fills the space of the water it was already displacing. This is why the water level doesn’t rise after the ice melts-it’s all about that balance between the weight of the ice and the water it displaces, keeping the water level the same before and after melting.

With a whole lot of algebra! I tried it, took me 20 minutes just to sort through it all. You're better off using more conventional means like the quotient rule: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pKl1estjra-8o5s.html

How come we see a shadow from the cylinder? If I cover up the cylinder with my hand, I still see the "shadow" on the tiles. Edit: Okay so I watched another video on the same illusion and I still didn't get it, until, I saw a comment. So basically your checkerboard image is alternating dark and light squares (that's if you don't have the cylinder, or more precisely if you don't have the shadow of the cylinder), when the shadow is there, it darkens whatever is in the shadow, in this case it darkens the lighter square, to where it's the same shade as the dark square that's not in shadow. Plus, you have the darker squares that surround it, that are also in shadow, which means, they're also darker, and so, you still perceived the difference in the lighter and darker squares. It just so happens that the light square that's in shadow is the exact same shade as the dark square that is not in shadow.
