Hey Jonny, I brought some Japanese Maple seeds from Japan (it is summer there), from places i visited and hoping to propagate them and have them as memento of Mt. fuji and couple other places. Where I live is winter now till end of August and the temperatures in day goes upto to 20 Degrees and falls between 6-10 degrees, what is your best suggestion to sow and hopefully propagate them as much as possible...?
@JonnyMaple5 күн бұрын
Since your winter season is almost over, you need to use the refrigerator stratification method of germinating seeds. You can find those instructions in my Japanese maple propagation guide which can be purchased here: jonnymaple.etsy.com

If your cuttings' leaves dry up and fall off are they pretty much dead or should you give them more time? My plastic bins got a little too much sun and they got hot. All the leaves dried up and fell off. I hate to give up on them but I have no experience whether they might still take?
@JonnyMaple15 күн бұрын
That usually means that they will fail in my experience.

@JonnyMaple Thanks...I'll call it a loss and refill the tote with some new cuttings. There were a couple trees that I won't be able to get to again that I was really hoping to get going. But that's life. At least I won't waste time watering dead sticks lol.

Jonny that was brilliant i air layer in the south of the UK from mid March to mid June with a big success rate i also put seeds in the fridge from November to April with good success i also graft with limited success probably 1 in 10 so i'm doing something wrong. This week i have taken 30 Acer cuttings and put them in a box as you suggest and i'll let you know how i get on with those but i did cut the leaves in half these are in my greenhouse. So with all this going on for the last 7 years i have accumulated over 300 Acers the love of my life as there is no wife to tell me off lol. Thanks again. Andy in Bognor Regis UK

Do you have a source for Japanese Red Maple seedlings? I haven't had any luck finding something that is 3-4". Everywhere I find seems to only sell 2-4' trees and/or bare roots.That doesn't help me for a bonsai tree.

Appreciate the videos, Jonny. I have my first propagation box, which I created based on your previous videos and have a variety of cuttings in. So far so good. I'll definitely check out the guide book. Cheers.

Hi Jonny! Can you make a video about the top 5 or 10 sun resistant Japanese maples please? I know Bloodgood and Red Emperor are ok with direct sunlight, but my Autumn Moon is devastated with only 2-3h of morning sun and I spent a lot of $ on it. I would like to stick to more resistant varieties, looks like Romanian morning sun is too much for some of them :( Also I bought your book, thank you for everything you are doing!

I’ve been having a lot of luck with volcano sand as a soil conditioner. It’s cheap and a little goes a long way. Breaks up and prevents clumping more effectively than hort/sharp sand and it’s not as heavy either.

Thanks for the tips man. I recently was given a seedling from my cousin who grew out a seedling from her mom (my aunt) who took a seed from my grandparents home from her childhood. I now have a 6 inch Japanese maple tree that goes back to before I was born and I’m 50 years old. Your videos are valuable to me as is this little tree. Thank you!
