Just discovered this race recently when building a level 10 character for a train heist one off game, figured he'd be useful in the confined space especially since I went lvl 6 College of Swords Bard/lvl 4 Swashbuckler Rogue and he did not disappoint. Trash talking the toughest mobs into coming at me only to yeet them out the window with a mobile flourish was loads of fun as was smacking them in the face with a booming blade, slipping out of 5 foot range with fancy footwork, then goading them with a butt smack and an akanbe taunt into coming at me only to trigger it's effect was hilarious. Alastaire Bungleroot is now currently my favorite character I've made and he was just supposed to be a one off! Might talk to my DM about re-instituting that Kender pocket trait though; I can only imagine the extra slapstick I could bring into the game with that at my disposal lol

Don’t forget the All-Purpose Tool that adds to spell attack rolls and DC. It really helps make sure the artillerist’s spells are effective.

I have just come up with a Yuan-ti monk in a campaign a friend is playing and we just reached Level 3! I was not really sure what subclass zu give her but well... having a snake-human hybrid which happens to be a monk kinda screams for that subclass right? xD Especially since the Yuan-ti get poison spray as a cantrip, but without the poison condition which I found kinda weird from the start o_O And I thought about getting the poisoners feat to maybe talk to my DM about using my cantrip to kinda get one of the ingredients for poison out of my snake features to then be able to put it on my weapon and get the poison condition that way. With the Viperstrike feature that issue basically fixes itself at level 6! So I could either go for the ASI or a different feat in the future :P Thanks for explaining the features and giving an overview of everything!

The biggest drawback about this subclass is the taxing misuse of ki points casting some of these spells!! You wouldn't be able to use your basic monk abilities(Flurry of Blows, Patient Defense, Step of the Wind, STUNNING STRIKE)!!!!! I'll do everything possible to avoid this subclass AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

Easy way around the wisdom dependancy feeling like an issue if you want to make a more combat focused build and also want your Trick DC high.. Magic initiate Druid for shillelagh, now you can make Cha (for bard stuff) Wis (for your tricks and attacks with quarterstaff) and con(for HP) your primary stats. Worried about your dex for AC? No worries! Choose tortle for your race. Problem solved-ish hahaa

Phandelver & Below I'm grabbing 3 celestial warlock of the chain with a lantern archon familiar variant, gift of everliving so dice based heals/potions are maximized, Lay on Hands for bringing team mates back up. Polearm Master + Sentinel + Dueling style + Resilient CON + Eldritch Mind so concentration stays up a bit longer. Not optimal but should hang on as tank in close quarters with two healers in the backline. Nonlethal staff (arcane focus) + shield (holy symbol) for materials.

Variant Human Rogue Thief. Sage Background, Wizards Apprentice Specialty. S 13 C 12 D16 I15 W10 C8 Athletics, Perception, Sleight of Hand, Stealth, Arcana and History as skills. Expertise with Stealth and Perception. Start with the Ritual Caster feat. Start with Find Familiar and Detect Magic. At level 4, take Tavern Brawler, making my character proficient with Alchemist Fire, Acid Flasks, Caltrops, Hunters Traps, Holy Water and Oil Flasks, allowing him to throw two Acid Flasks per round and trigger sneak attack with either of them because of Fast Hands. also raise Strength to 14 to increase Athletics which synergizes with Second Story work. At level 5, reach the milestone of being able to cast Phantom Steed as a ritual, allowing my character to have a movement speed of 100' at all times. At level 6, take Expertise with Athletics and Sleight of Hand. At level 8, take Mounted Combatant, allowing my character to keep his phantom steed safe, and attack with advantage while mounted. At level 10, take Healer, synergizing with Fast Hands and allowing my character to basically cast Healing Word twice per round with no limits until the healing kit's run out. At level 12 and 16 boost dexterity. At level 19 take Observant, giving +5 to passive perception and passive investigation and boosting Intelligence to 16. I would be leaning into the ability to use magical rod's, staffs and wands through use magic device and providing utility with ritual spells and mundane objects through fast hands, tavern brawler and healer. I'd be using Alarm, Comprehend Languages, Detect Magic, Identify, Tenser's Floating Disk, Unseen Servent, Magic Mouth, Leomunds Tiny Hut, Water Breathing, Divination, Contact Other Plane and Rary's Telepathic Bond rituals as soon as I could get my hands on them and as often as possible, and I would have an owl familiar and phantom steed at all times. This build is an old school Advanced Dungeons and Dragons style Thief build, based on the Grey Mouser from the books by Fritz Leiber He's best in a party that doesn't have a wizard, because there's no ritual caster overlap. And, he's able to be an amazing healer once he hits level 13. With fast hands, healer, a bag of holding full of healing kits and a staff of healing, he can handle almost everything. He could go in solo, or as a duo, and really do well. I like building a rogue that dumps Charisma and puts Strength in the top three. He's not a smooth talker, but he knows parkour, and he can use Tavern Brawler to pull Jackie Chan type shit if he gets caught with his hand in someone's pocket. He might have brief intense romantic moments with princesses based around traumatic bonding, but for the most part, he sleeps with beautiful whores. It starts out strong, too. A rogue with an owl familiar is a top tier rogue out of the gate. A fourth level rogue with an owl familiar who can sneak attack with an acid flask at range as a bonus action is a very strong forth level rogue. There are no weak levels, and no abilities that cease to be useful. Sneak attacking with an acid flask from a distance of 20' as a bonus action is still powerful at level 16. It's a single class build. You're dealing 2d6+8d6+5+5 as a bonus action with a mundane object that costs 25gp. And, using a healing kit to restore a downed comrade to one hit point twice per round is still powerful at level 20. If the dungeon master is willing to give access to things like bombs and dynamite, his damage potential rises dramatically, but he doesn't need it. The fact that he can use his bonus action to attempt a sneak attack with fast hands really sets him free to be flexible in battle. If he lands his sneak attack with his bonus action, he can use his action to do whatever is optimal. If he has a good wand or staff, that might be a better choice. If he misses his sneak attack, he can try again. If you were going to take anything away from this... if you ignore flavor and give a thief rogue the tavern brawler and healer feats, you instantly become op. You gain the ability to sneak attack with a bonus action, and you get the ability to prevent a total party kill by repeatedly raising two downed comrades to one hit point with a healers kit. And ritual caster is amazing for any rogue, because it gives find familiar at level 1 and phantom steed at level 5. I love this character. His owl flies past the giant's face and distracts it as he rides in on his phantom steed and throws an acid flask at the giant's vitals, landing a sneak attack and causing significant damage as he rides past. Then he rides away to a safe distance and blasts the giant with a wand of fireballs. After the giant is dead, he abandons his phantom steed, letting it fade away, and climbs the sheer mountain face to get to the castle where the final treasure awaits. Once this job is finished, the old wizard will repay him with the a staff of healing and a scroll of contact other plane, both of which he has been seeking for a long time. Once he finishes this personal side quest and reunites with his party, that staff of healing is really going to come in handy. He'll never use cure wounds, but lesser restoration and mass cure wounds will definitely see use. And he has personal reasons why he wants the scroll of contact other plane. This guy can do stealth and infiltration and information gathering and theft and burglary and escape with the best of them. His ritual spells provide massive utility. He is a top tier battlefield medic. He has limited battlefield control through his ability to throw two bags of caltrops per round, and if he can find a reliable source of tanglefoot bags, this improves dramatically. His ability to generate advantage with his familiar and attempt to sneak attack twice per round throwing alchemist fire and acid flasks makes him a top tier short range damage dealer. The fact that he can use both wizard and cleric magic items gives him immense flexibility. His mobility is off the charts. He has a natural climb speed with a strength of fourteen, second story work and expertise in athletics, and he can use a ritual to summon a steed that moves 100' which he spent a feat learning to ride like a mongolian. He has expertise in perception, and he's very knowledgeable, with skills in arcana and history and a high intelligence. Of course, he's also got expertise in sleight of hand, so, he can steal your wallet with the best of them. --------------------- The druid and the barbarian are both down. The balor is not. The sorcerer is dealing with minions and barely keeping it together. No matter. That balor is going to kill us all. The thief charges in on his phantom steed, with his healing kit in hand. He quickly gives the barbarian triage as a bonus action and gets him back on his feet. Then he does the same to the druid as a standard action. He's been hovering around 20' away throwing bombs and shooting his opponents with wands. But his dungeon master is being a dick and not letting him perform the healing action targeting a prone ally without dismounting, and now he's standing unmounted, inside melee range of a balor, behind two allies who each have one hit point. He can repeat this indefinitely. If he's undisturbed. The fate of the realms rests in the hands of the druid and the barbarian. If they let the balor reach the thief, the game will end in a total party kill. The thief does not understand why he is here. What the hell happened? It doesn't matter. This is the pragmatic option. Do what is optimal and try not to shit yourself. I hope the sorcerer isn't overwhelmed by minions before they finish this balor off. --------------------- And, lets not pretend for a moment that Divination and Contact Other Plane aren't the best spells ever from a dungeon master's perspective. A thief that casts Divination by means of ritual every day gives the dungeon master ample opportunity for exposition that never seems forced. And, if the party is stonewalled and the dungeon master is trying to refrain from pulling their hair out because the players are too stupid to see the clues he worked so hard to assemble, contact other plane is awesome. You might get to give the dungeon master the opportunity to take pity on you and spoon feed you the answers. Or you might gaze into the abyss and go insane and have to be restrained by your comrades until you regain your sanity.

So you brought up the most commonly talked about thing: Using wails to kill something small. I like it better the opposite way. You sneak attack the mob (or auto crit on a downed enemy) and use the wails to hit a hard to hit enemy.

I don't know if you two will respond to this comment, but I need tips for roleplaying with this subclass. My idea of the character is that he discovered that he is just in a game and seeks to free himself from within, using the periods where the table is not occurring, as supposedly he could move freely during this period, where the world would continue to progress without interference from the master and players. But I don't know how I could roleplay that. I don't want to make a Deadpool style character, as cool as that would be, but it seems like the roleplay options for this subclass are just these...would you happen to have any other ideas?

A lot of people miss that arcane abjuration as stated works like the banishment spell, while it's not super impactful, if you are in a situation where you can use it if the monster fails it's save theres no concentration required so the spell can't break or end b4 that minute and it just disappears from your plane for good ex. A 14th lvl arcane cleric attacked by a group of bearded devils and they all fail their saves can just shunt them back to the hells with nothing but this feature

There's not a second save on Banishment, regardless who is casting it or who it's cast on. They only come back after 1 minute or if concentration breaks. There's no second saving throw, so if they're from another plane, they are gone for good after one minute regardless of which class/subclass cast the spell. What you guys have discovered, is that Banishment is a very strong spell, but that's totally unrelated to this subclass.

Love the Cloak of Billowing. Totally give them a plus on a charisma check. Do have some varieties of the breathing bubble. Lot of underwater adventures. Also use it as fume protection in an alchemists lab when potions are bubbling and giving off poisonous vapours. The Sherlock Holmes adventure The Adventure of the Priory School published in 1904 featured horse shoes that left tracks like cattle to hide the fact that cattle rustlers had been around. Very similar to your boots of false tracks. In John Varley's Demon one of the characters was leaving giant bird tracks around to tease party members. They built a set of stilts to do it. Like the lantern. I have a pair of balls size of a large marble. One Hard one soft and glue like. You attach the soft ball to a creature and can track it with the hard one which glows or warms for the next 24 hours when pointed towards the creature you are trying to track. You can throw or sling the soft. The Glue ball is hard to remove .You can take it off using bleach , a caustic liquid, like lye. Otherwise to get rid of it you need dispel magic or drop the clothing or armour it is attached to. Once activated it works for 24 hours.

An idea to make scouts actually useful, if your party has a scout they should be able to actually "scout" better then other classes to both avoid ambushes and find quicker routes for travel, i think it suits the class. Or maybe another buff is advantage on rolls related to getting a surprise round on enemies. As is scout is only really any good in boss fights or mini-boss fights and only when they are at or above the level that gives their whole party advantage for a round.
