The only reason why Chevys had a chance of winning is the fact the the Hemi powered cars were penalized. First it was 200 lbs. then it was a 400 lbs penalty. That is why ALL top fuel and funny cars are based on the 426 Hemi. Chevys couldn’t make the horsepower, Fords SOHC Hemi always broke their crankshafts.

The first time I went to drag strip I was 14 years old. Saw dick landy race. I remember the cigar. At 73 I still go to that track and still think obout that day. The golden age of drag racing. Good stuff guys.😢

Grumpy was a rule pusher. There was no prohibition of the Vega but even a mild 350 is too much for a stock unibody. Grumpy told them for 'safety purposes' he needed the tube frame and they could hardly deny it. It and Grumpy were such a hit the first year that they left the rules as they were. He also chose a 327 knowing he could make it rev faster than a 350, which would be necessary to get the HP and top-end speed he needed. There was a lot more science going on than is apparent and Grumpy was seeing the whole picture, not just focused on the engine like everyone else was.

Atco just closed and Englishtown closed several years ago. Now we go to Maple Grove in PA. Kenny Koretski is spending money there to improve the track and grounds. JDM Engineering opened a facility in Texas.

At Atco Raceway you could talk to the drivers while they waited in line to race. I remember Bill Jenkins telling a young man, “In order to win money you have to spend money.”

A little known fact is the NHRA wanted to slow up the Hemi cars in SS/A because the Ford and Chevy guys were looking very bad. The more weight they put on the Hemi cars the quicker they went. So the NHRA declassified SS/A as a pro class and invented Pro Stock and allowed light weight tube chassis, small blocks aluminum engine components , etc. and a lot of fiberglass. The Hemi cars were forced out of Pro Stock for being too dominant. It wasn't until much later the big block Hemi cars were allowed back but had the run new NHRA sanctioned engine architecture which again made the Hemis noncompetitive., If you want anything screwed up the NHRA will do it for you.

They hated Chrysler so much because they won so much that they would do anything to win. That vega i bet weighs 1000 lbs less that Dicks car. To let that little car pass as pro stock shows the politics involved.

Whatever your brand loyalties might be and whatever insults are hurled at different makes and drivers, what made 70's Pro Stock was the level of creativity and ingenuity to take advantage of the rulebook. One of the best examples was the somewhat butt-ugly Gapp & Rousch "Tiajuana Taxi" 4 door Ford Maverick. Jack Rousch used the weigh break available to a longer wheelbase smaller car, and with the 351 Cleveland motor as its basis, fielded a very competitive, if unorthodox race car. Between the engineering acumen of Jack Rousch and the driving skills of Wayne Gapp, they were almost always on the mix, especially on the match race circuit.

My dad took us to a couple local 1/8 mile and 1/10 strips in the late 60's to early 70's. My first trip ever to a 1/4 mile strip was to Maple Grove for its season opener in 1973; the main event: Best 3 out of 5 Match Race between Grumpy Jenkins and Dandy Dick Landy. On what was probably Grumpy's home track, Landy took him in 3 straight races. They put on a great show and that made me a pro stock fan.

I used to have an extensive model collection of drag cars, mostly 70's Pro Stockers: Grumpy's Toy, Sox & Martin Barracuda, "Fast" Eddie Schartman, Maverick, "Dyno" Don Nicholson Pinto, Bob Glidden Plymouth Arrow, The Motown Missile, Butch Leal's California Flash. Real race cars!

Back when Pro Stock was my favorite category. The factory hot rod wars. Sadly, Pro Stock is now a Camaro spec class. That's why I'm hoping Mountain Motor Pro Stock catches on and eventually supplants the current Pro Stock class.

Why do they have to actually race? Can't they just look at the elapsed times that they have achieved to determine which one is faster?
