Dude, you look like me you speak like me you act like me, it’s hilarious. Nice video and yes, Myron is one of my favorite all-time drummers. His drums always sound amazing especially his snare and of course because everything was better back in the 80s and I mean everything, his drums were up in the mix so you can hear everything specifically his tom tom 3:03 work which always added nice little Rhythms to Pat Benatar’s great songs. And I agree I love drummers who serve the music instead of serving their ego. Unfortunately, that’s all you see nowadays, especially spastic, gospel,chop drummers.

Such a great analysis and tribute. You would always wait for the drum riffs in that Squire era. Truly outstanding drummer.

Kevin you jumped in last minute as a sub playing a show w Tonic in Akron, Oh one night back in the late 90s or 2000. My band was taking a break from rehearsals prepping to leave for New York City to do a show and we came out to see you guys play. We stood right at the front edge of the stage. I could have smashed Lavery's toes lol I was so close. Your power yet control floored me And taught me more. My only regret is not sticking around for the after show meet n greet with the rest of my band to personally tell you how inspiring your drumming was for this drummer too!

Funny you mention Bobby Chouinard in this. Like 5 minutes ago I had a conversation on Facebook about Bobby and how I went to see Billy Squier open for Benitar many years ago and how, being a drummer myself, I loved BOTH those drummers playing that night. I was there to see Billy Squier's band mostly but Myron Grombacher impressed me a lot too.

Don't you want to hear the other musicians?
@TheBigrightfoot5 ай бұрын
I hear them quite well. My in ears don't fully seal and I get a LOT of stage bleed. the only instruments i don't hear via ambient/proximity is bass, acoustics, fiddle, and voices. All guitars are very loud, as this band does not use Kempers, etc. Those instruments mentioned are very balanced in my mix, but I have to pull certain melodic channels down when I am going to post anything so as to avoid the overly aggressive anti-copyright algorithm KZfaq employs.

What mic setup r u using?
@TheBigrightfoot5 ай бұрын
It changes based on what FOH needs, even nightly if Jim decides to swap tom mics or whatever, but all are Shure products. Standard 52/91 combo on kick, 57's on snares, etc. Toms have been Beta181's and 98's with KSM's on the bigger toms, not sure what he'll use as OH/hats this year.

How does someone even get into the scene and get started to potentially get into this level or drumming for a living
@TheBigrightfoot6 ай бұрын
Oh man, theres a LOT of info that covers this answer, too much for this section to be comprehensive, BUT: Work in your area, build the name and skills scoot to a place that launches tours and records alot (LA, NYC, Nashville) then do the same, building that name. I started with a band of friends 30 years ago and kept getting hired away by bigger acts that we'd play with, eventually ending up in buses and on bigger stages. I think that is the most definitive way to "do it" that isn't mostly luck.

Kevin what’s your favorite song to play with Jon Pari? And what is the best crash cymbal to use while playing the drums?
@TheBigrightfoot8 ай бұрын
“Your heart or mine” is a lot of fun right now. As far as cymbals go, the “best” one for any given moment changes constantly, but for a crash the safe bet is a med to med/light on the thinner side somewhere between 18-20” for most rock/country applications

I did for a couple of years and it’s great as long as you have only one sound you need. I needed several to sound “right” or to at least help the artist be comfortable with what he heard.

Great to hear and see Kevin! Thank you for sharing. When it comes to performing a show like this, what do you prioritize in your head as you're performing? In other words, are you first and foremost thinking about keeping the band held together with your time (as you mention in the description), thinking about staying with the tracks/click, thinking about where your kick and backbeat are placed, remembering the song form/structure, or your overall physical performance (both technically and visually for the audience). How much of that all becomes second nature and not something you're consciously about, and how much of it takes attention and lazer focus during every show?
@TheBigrightfoot9 ай бұрын
The comfort and delivery of the art (as pretentious as that sounds) by the artist is my main focus. Supporting that. I’ll kill every click or best idea if it isn’t supporting his goal in any moment. So I guess you could say I’m ‘tracking’ him and paying close attention to how his feel and pacing is and if he sounds rushed or like he is comfortable. After that is the skill set stuff: limb placement, time, outside stuff like loops, etc
