What do you mean with fine sandpaper? "Fine" could mean 100 mesh or 200 mesh or as well 1000 mesh.
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 4 күн бұрын
I use 220 and 400 grit so perhaps I should say 'very fine' sandpaper. Thanks for the question :)

@@ThePencilRoomOnline I guess it’s called foreshortening- : to shorten (a detail) in a drawing or painting so that it appears to have depth.

Ok cool, thats what I guessed but as it was on the proportion video I just wanted to check you weren't asking about heights or something 😊 I'll add it to my list

Im afraid i dont get this one. Took me ungodly amount of time to repeat that leaf. Way way more then it should. I have trouble doing this whole "draw at the same time as you look" thing and i dont really understand or see different edges.
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 7 күн бұрын
It's a different approach to the other videos which start with simplifying shapes. This video is more about practicing looking in a different way and recording what you see as you go slowly around the edge. It does take practice but it's also not a vital skill to have at this stage, especially if you are focusing more on geometric shaped based subjects and drawing with that simplifying process. Instead of trying to see different edges, take a look at the leaf again and see if you can see where light is hitting more on some edges than others (it is a very subtle change in colour or value). All we are really doing is emphasising where the light or shadow is by using a thinner or thicker line. If you want to face the challenge you could check out my other videos on continuous line drawing: How To Do Contour Drawing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/atd-gN2Ax5OoiWw.html Continuous Line Drawing Of Your Hand kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ep6EZ7udvafahIU.html But if it's not for you at this stage, don't worry! Thanks for your comment 🙂

I watched the Beginners video, is drawing from shoulder the same as drawing from elbow? And are these techniques used for different styles of drawing? I tend to draw mostly from my wrist. Thanks!
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 14 күн бұрын
Yes generally the same thing.Traditionally we say draw from the shoulder but I usually say from the elbow because when I say the shoulder I find people think too much about it and forget what their hand is doing! The idea is to have the hand sweeping freely across the page to achieve longer, fluid lines. Drawing from the wrist is fine, especially on a smaller sized drawing. It's good to try out moving from the elbow/shoulder to learn different ways of moving your hand and to develop coordination for different movements. Thanks for watching!

Due to me having big hands ma'am, Is it alright if it feels natural if I use my wrist?
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 14 күн бұрын
Totally fine, work whatever way is comfortable, especially if working on a small scale. It's good to be aware of other ways you can move your arm/hand to get different types of lines. So give it a go working from the elbow/shoulder but work with whatever is most comfortable :)

Thanks so much for your videos (again)! It's so enjoying and helpful to follow along. My main problem here were the upper lines of the openings, they mostly were too flat. But your tip to draw the center lines and to direct the side curves to the middle point of the minor axis helped so much! If you do that a couple of times, you get a good feeling for the openings without drawing the axis

Thanks for this very informative first lesson in drawing. I am an absolute beginner at the age of 77 and I love following your lessons. I ma Dutch but I live in Brasil. One thing I noticed while making the fantasy drawing is that in some places the lines smear when you slide over them when drawing another line with e.g. your little finger if you use it as a support. How can I prevent this?
@ThePencilRoomOnline
@ThePencilRoomOnline 28 күн бұрын
Very common problem especially for left handers like me 😅 Softer pencils (2B-8B) will smudge more than hard pencils. Aside from turning your page around to avoid resting your hand on the drawing, you can use a paper towel under your hand, over the areas of the drawing you've already done. It may pick up a bit of the graphite from the drawing but it shouldn't smudge it 🙂 Thanks for watching!

Same here: checked in at lesson 3, and going back to lessons 1 and 2 to start at the beginning. This is just what I have needed and been looking for. Assume nothing, except that 1. making the look of three-D reality on a 2-D piece of paper is a skilled illusion, with techniques; and 2. you need to learn how. But you CAN.
