I heard a slight increase in clarity in Alnico and a slightly deeper bottom on the neodymium but the difference is almost undetectable and would probably make just about zero difference in the grand scheme of things.

Neo more compressed and even. Alnico has a low mid pokey character, sounds like I can hear the finger/pick stroke more. Neo:Alnico / Modern:vintage to my ears, both are great. Would be awesome to hear how they blend with rear pickup. Great bass playing and sound quality!

I preferred the Alnico, but the difference is so subtle, I probably couldn't tell the difference once it's in the mix.
@IvanBassist4 сағат бұрын
True, but the little things add up :) thanks for watching!
@carlton13907 сағат бұрын
The Neo' pickups may lack top end but they have a high-mid presence and sound faster-response than the Alnico. I prefer the Alnico pickup (probably because I like a classic sounding P Bass and these surprised me at how close they sound to that) and with their low mid bump probably sit in a mix in the same great way that a P does. Superb playing as usual!
@IvanBassist4 сағат бұрын
Yeah. They Neos also feel more compressed when playing, which helps to even out your playing. Their midrange growl is also cool :)
@frankmarini53919 сағат бұрын
to me, the growliness on the open string is more pronounced in the Alnico, and has a more modern vibe. I think either set of pickups is fine. I had a 2009 Dingwall AB Z test mule with the first version of the neo P pickup, and thought it sound really good. The Alnicos bring the P tone into today's vibe. Very cool

Ohh nice story about the ABZ! I also used to own one back in 2009-2010 until i had to sell it due to a pinky injury in 2014

What are your thoughts on running these two parallel? Having the high frequencies run through the drive while keeping the octave pedal on the lower frequencies. In my experience, drive just zaps your low end. I think the Boss LS-2 would work well for this.
@IvanBassist3 сағат бұрын
You definitely could do that. For me personally, that’s over complicating things. Though.

Those are some super versatile tones you can get out of those pickups. I'm guessing that they are different from the Combustion and NG pickups? These really do the Jazz sound really convincingly!

Hello, I am interested in purchasing electronic tube front stage pedals and have set my sights on EBS ValveDrive DI and Olympic MkIIIS. I am not concerned with IR function, only the taste of the front stage amplifier. I would like to hear your advice
@TheJimboe118 күн бұрын
Absolutely spot on. That’s pretty much the sounds I use and I’m never missing in the PA mix. When I started trying to find out why I was so lost in mixes I found isolated bass tracks from famous artists and songs. I was shocked to find that most of them had some sort of distortion or overdrive in them. Yet in the full mix I never noticed that. When I started copying they sounds, I didn’t particularly like them but when I heard recordings from our live shows I was gob smacked. Great informative video 👍

Great video! I don't gig very often and frequently don't have an opportunity for a sound check. (And I have listened to live recordings and the sound guy is not helping me out.) I am going to try turning down bass and turning up mids. However, when one is coming up with sounds (using pedals) I create them to sound good (i.e. not in a band setting). However, these may not work in a mix. I wonder if one should apply an EQ with pre-determined settings to turn a bass tone that sounds good on its own into one that sounds good in a live mix?
@IvanBassist11 күн бұрын
I always dial in my sounds to sound good in a mix

@@IvanBassist Thanks for the reply but that's not very helpful. You're not tweaking your pedals when you are in a rehearsal with your band mates waiting patiently by? Are you coming up with your "mixes" in a DAW?

Put one before and one after any effects pedal that changes or alters the tone you are trying to achieve say for example put one also after your EQ.

Hola!

Thanks for the video. Caveman sounds better in the mix (IMHO). Noble is kinda getting lost especially in the rock song demo. I would prefer Caveman for the current settings you've made.

Makes sense, i rarley play on big stages, so I tend to push my low end. When i played a fest recently i was wondering why my bass sounded so boomy and muddy in the mix. The sound man made it work but i definitely noticed it. This was super helpful.
