thank you so much for this video and the template! currently I'm looking for junior positions as a narrative designer and this is so helpful in building portfolio!

After seeing this Video it makes no sense to me to be a Narrative Designer. Are you a kind of "Jack of all Trades"? For example: Does ND imply that the Writer of the Story does not have the Inside of a Gamer? Like you do not need a Writer that is also a Gamer? Can you pls elaborate why a ND is even needed. How much influence do you have? Who does aprove your work? Thank you.
@RhianneMurphy
@RhianneMurphy 4 күн бұрын
@@mrturbo84 Hiya! So the TL;DR is that an ND is the overseer of narrative. Some Devs don't have or need one because the narrative isn't as heavy so they might just hire a writer to write some voice lines for example. Comparatively, larger and more intricate narratives in games sometimes have teams lead by either the design director or narrative director (again, depending on team size). Writers may only have to work on scripts whereas narrative designers (especially technical narrative designers) also have to understand design principles and work in software to implement scripts like in engine. Hope this helps! :)

@@RhianneMurphy Thanks for the Answer. How much influence has the ND on the Story? What if the Writer wants Something in the Story but the ND (Narrative Designer) does not. Is there no friction? So if the Team is bigger you hirer a ND but why not just hirer more Writers? When you work basically in every Part of the Development how can you become a Master in your job? That Multitasking sound very Stressfull. Do you only need to Understand the Fundamentals?
@RhianneMurphy
@RhianneMurphy 4 күн бұрын
@@mrturbo84 Ideally it's a team effort, though someone has to steer the ship. This is usually some sort of narrative lead (Narrative director, Lead writer or sometimes the design director) again, totally depends on the team size and the kind of project you're working on. As for 'why not just hire writers', some places do! The main difference between Writers and ND is that not all writers have game experience, whereas ND's have to have game experience. So if a team is looking to have someone who understands both writing and how it's implemented into engines who has worked on games before, then they'll likely want an ND instead o a writer. That's not to say writers don't have experience working on games but in general that's the understanding. The secret is, every single person on a development team will multitask to some extent. To become a master at your craft I would argue it requires you to understand how the others work so you can best improve your work to collaborate and create more efficiently. Everyone starts with the fundamentals, but overtime you just naturally pick up things through experience and time.

This was such a great video, really informative and has definitely set the writer cogs in my brain turning for my next character! I had a couple of questions pop up that I’d appreciate any insight on if you have the time :) 1. Would you suggest putting this document as a sample in a narrative portfolio? I know hiring managers typically don’t have long to look at each applicants portfolio so I’m cautious about putting a large document in there - but at the same time I feel like showing the ability to go into this level of detail with character development shows real skill. 2. Would you do the same level of detail or whittle it down for a character that’s designed to be an NPC? With being a DND character Vala’s document obviously suits a character biography built for a protagonist, but is there anything you would change if she was instead just going to be a put into a game as a side-quest giver or an ally? (p.s. have you tried yorkshire tea’s biscuit brew? it’s been my new favourite writing companion lately)
@RhianneMurphy
@RhianneMurphy 16 күн бұрын
Heya! So if you're starting to build a portfolio, this would certainly be a relevant piece to have in there until you get your foot in the door or work on more projects :) As for smaller NPC's, I would make them much smaller bios - some background NPC's are literally just 'Bob the burly weapon trader who is a human with a gruff persona and voice' and that's it!

Hey! I learnt about empire through a fellow member of my medieval archery group. I really want to go, and have a basic kit due to doing medieval reenactment already. My question is, what advice can you give in regards to going to your first empire event, by yourself as a woman? My husband isn’t interested in going and my daughter is too young to come with me. I’m abit overwhelmed of the thought of going by myself. I don’t know where to start, am I allocated a random encampment when I join a nation?. Any advice would be great! I’m hoping to go to E4 this year. Thank you, Layla

Heya! So I did go with a friend the first time but I have also done a solo night and I've found people are very kind and look out for one another. You can join discords and facebook pages for the event/your nation to connect with people beforehand. For camping, it depends if you are camping in character or out of character. Out of character you can pitch wherever in your nations designated area. In character you'll need to organise where your tent goes with whoever that nation's camp planner is. Hope this helps a bit :)

ive recently took up interest in this position specifically as a way to work in game design and was wondering if this position ends up working closely with concept artists or if there was maybe another term for someone who does both. i was a drawer before i took interest in game design and am wanting to work on narrative while still having a hand in the visual design: iyo would seeking a smaller studio where these roles are interspersed be best for that? (thanks for the vid also i feel like its helped me get some bearings, also is that kurama on your shelf?)
@RhianneMurphy
@RhianneMurphy Ай бұрын
Hiya! So in my experience, narrative should work with the art team in some capacity, but a narrative/artist role that combines both doesn't really exist unless you're planning on starting your own team or working as a solo dev (I'm talking very small indie team 1-5 people). Reason being that both roles are usually full-time jobs that require constant attention, so having someone oversee both would not be fair on the individual and massively slow down development time. My advice would be perhaps start your own projects where you can do both or look at working for one of those roles full-time whilst exploring the other in a more personal capacity (working full time in narrative but working on art in your personal time or vice versa). Hope that helps!

In defence of the scam bag...in a real fantasy world, if a leatherworker made a mistake like that, they'd still sell it as that's precious materials they can't recuperate, and you got it for free. You could RP that you rescued a leatherworker's kid and they were so grateful the kid insisted on making you a gift. Silver linings and all.

Heyo! Awesome video. Always awesome to see newer people talking about how they have got stuck into the game! I started Empire at the Winter Solstice, exactly 1 year ago now, I put off joining a LARP system as I do not have the social bravado I thought must be required. Eventually, over months. worked myself up to throwing myself at an event, solo. I immediately found amazing people in Wintermark and really fell into my character, My characters accent took ME by surprise 😂But has allowed me to throw myself into a situation that my normal self, Ab-so-lutely would not ahaha. My Wintermark character straight away had background options I had not even thought of before I started. None of your character really has to be strongly decided before starting, throw yourself into and then see where the river flows, is my advise to any newjoiners. It really is an amazing way to step completely out of your own comfort zone and become someone else for a weekend. Now, a year later, my character Marcus has been named twice in Wintermark tradition, and has stepped into the role of Warden of Wintermark!! Iv probably shouted at you in the moot square 😅(Sorry!!) whist sweating my tits off in furs with very much not-summer clothing. Empire is truely an amazing experience where you can do as much or as little as you want, and is a totally magical place to have some fun and make some amazing friends ❤ People will absolutely be in the same shoes as I was in tiptoing around coming or not, I emplore them to give it a go!! you will not be disappointed 🎉 And your always welcome to a drink around our hearthfire 🍻 Again, thank you so much for the video, and im sure it will help so many more take that first dive into the Empire world! Excited to see people in the comments taking the dive 😁🌟 See you all in the field!
