Although, apparently, this was "originally written for the basset clarinet", there are, in fact, no uses of the extra notes to be found in this score: thank you, Wolfgang, for that. If only he'd left them out of the concerto, too -- then we wouldn't have to hear the horrible, out of tune stuffed up noises that we do!

"Mambrú" era habitual en las cintas magnetofónicas de canciones infantiles en España, pero me llevé una sorpresa, siendo todavía niño y no teniendo aún más idea de quién fue el duque de Marlborough que de las órbitas de los objetos transneptunianos, cuando descubrí que la conocían también los franceses. Acostumbrado a mi propia versión, la suya me parecía sencilla, sosa, falta de una cadencia más conclusiva. Además, tuve una de mis primeras experiencias de eso que, según supe también después, en español se ha llamado pomporruta (por las "Pomporrutas imperiales" de Fernando Colomo) y en inglés mondegreen: es decir, creer reconocer en una canción palabras que nada tienen que ver con las cantadas. Yo no sabía apenas francés, pero creía estar convencido de que la esposa de Mambrú se llamaba "Madama Sotomonte" (por el verso que dice "Madame à sa tour monte"...).

Muy interesante, gracias por el comentario! Seguramente, al tratarse de un hecho folklórico, es muy difícil determinar en qué época y en qué circunstancias tuvo lugar la transformación del comienzo de la canción que, en la versión francesa comienza con un intervalo de 6º y en la española con un intervalo de 4º; y lo mismo con respecto al cambio de compás (de binario compuesto a binario simple). Cualquier información sobre esto será muy bien recibida. Un saludo desde Argentina.

very fine rendition. Thanks for sharing! We always played the last mvt stressing the grace notes within the theme - so this a kind of new listening experience to me. Also sounds good and natural - like little bell punches.

thanks for the reply - no, this trio we didn't record but maybe there's a chance to do so in autumn (with a historical hammerclavier from 1791). This is incredible, he only had time to write the part for the violin one hour before he performed this; the piano part "was in his mind" as was discovered in his letter to his father Leopold.

From the very beginning the music takes us into an emotional atmosphere, not the sunniest one. A mix of sweet nostalgia, longing and maybe resignation. Of course, as always in Mozart, wrapped it up in sheer perfection.
