I understand the setup. But what's the use of the box with nuts and bolts ? Isn't it better to rather skip it. It just serves the purpose for mealworms to walk into the 4th box right ? Or do you add some feed on the raised platform in to for them to grow a bit, after which they will move to the last box ?

This is the neatest most compact setup I’ve seen yet. It’s really true what they say about German Engineering. Well done. I’m going to closely mimic this setup, thank you.

**** TOO MANY MEALWORMS KILL THE BIRDS AND THE REPTILES **** If you take care of a bird or reptile please note that mealworms, peanuts and sunflower hearts (though they love them because they are so fatty and delicious to animals) are full of phosphate which causes the calcium level of the blood and the bones to fall so much so that the animal cannot even stand on her feet and painfully dies (a condition called MBD). It is so hard to calculate the safe amount of mealworms so please ask a bird specialist (a vet whose specialty is birds or reptiles) before feeding an animal mealworms or keep it as low as possible. Spread this piece of information and save many animals around the world who painfully die everyday because of this.

I used a stacked drawer box with 10 drawers to build this project. This is the drawer box: www.amazon.de/gp/product/B00KRAW9FC/ I started the project right now, so I am not sure if the automatic sorting will work. I´ll keep you informed ...

I like your pupa staging tray. I will add to my current 2 tray system. Dont understand the need for an elevated floor in one box. I just have a box with fly screen containing beatels and a solid tray to catch eggs. New tray to catch eggs each week, watch older trays for development of pupa.

First you put box #1. After a week(?) You'll replace it with box #2. When you add box 3, you put box 2 on top of box 1. After a few weeks, you'll have box 7, while boxes 6..1 are on top of each other, hoping that generation #1 is old enough to be fed and to become puppae

I wish u would show this with mealies/beetles/pupea to show how it works. I have uses the all in one and regular drawer system for a while and can not picture how this would work, especially the 4 big holes and the raised bottom one.

The pupae is the first Box. If the pupae turns into a beetle they crawl to the food and that is one tray down through the big holes. Then the beetle lays eggs and they fall through the net to the elevated ground and not to the worms. If they are Born they crawl to the food at the last tray through the elevated ground. So you only have to Grab the pupae and put that to tray one. But i dont know if it's working.

Really efficient and creative. Though I doubt that the compartment that you finished around 7:25 works... The hatched eggs will simply stay in the frass, some will wiggle down, but most will stay in the same compartment, eating frass. Yet I thank you for the creative idea of making holes in the pupae container for them to walk down, maybe if you make divisions to hold the pupae in, even if beetles walk by, and if you put fruit pieces near the holes so that the hatchlings are attracted by the smell, then it may just work

Do you have any instructions on how to use this setup once it's completed? I know the basics - darkling beetles lay eggs, which turn into mealworms, which pupate into beetles. And all 3 life stages need to be kept separate. So who goes where? Does food only go into the growing boxes, and none of the others?

hey- as far as i understand, in your setup the adult beetles dont get food anymore, right? Will they have enough energy left to mate and lay eggs? Would be awesome if you replied! Thanks in advance.

Eggs that fall through the netting land on the platform. This way the beetles can't eat them. When the eggs hatch. The tiny mealworms crawl to the edge where they fall down to box #1 which contains food

Awesome system ! Do you have a video of them in action ? Cause I don't really get how the sorting tower works.
@BadgerNNN
@BadgerNNN 7 жыл бұрын
Waiting to see some update videos as well. However, the sorting tower is fairly simple. The full size mealworm bin is poured into the sorting tower. The mealworms/wheat bran/chaff will fall thru the big screen and the pupae's will not so that you can toss the pupae's into the pupae bin. Than, the chaff/poop will fall thru the smaller screen in middle bin leaving only the mealworms and good wheat bran in middle bin that you can place back into the grow container.

I was thinking something like that. Now it's even clearer. Thanks !

i did the build, and i must say that i am changing to bigger boxes right now, as the small ones capture mold fast. Also the seperator only works partially. The bigger-sized "screen" isn't able to seperate worms from pupae, as the pupae fall through as well- at least for me they do- and i chose the size that was adviced in the video. So you may be sparing some time and money if you just go with flat storage boxes... anyway i still like this video as it made me start the whole mealworm-project.
