Is wargaming just as niche and unheard of as a hobby in Birmingham as it is across the pond?
@PookieUK8 күн бұрын
Much like Dungeons & Dragons and the rest of the roleplaying hobby, wargaming is really divided into Games Workshop and the rest. Dungeons & Dragons and Games Workshop are much more widely known than the rest. It has its adherents, but it appeals to a certain audience as you would expect.

We really need a good, rules-light wuxia game. There are several games out there, but even the ones claiming they're simple are burdened with too many fiddly rules, options, etc. I'm beginning to think it simply can't be done and in any case, the market is probably too niche. And FWIW Daniel Kwan is a total poser; a banana in the slang of my Chinese wife.

@PookieUK24 күн бұрын
This was packaged up and sent to my friend Scott in California. He was pleased to have a copy at last. This and other Call of Cthulhu campaigns from Pagan Publishing are deserving of reprinting and updating as new editions for Call of Cthulhu, Seventh Edition. Unfortunately this is unlikely, as the authors in question are not interested having them back in print.

I love these DCC Lankhmar modules. When I first started with RPGs, I was using Basic Roleplaying and the old City State of the Invincible Warlord map, and was probably reading some Leiber stories at around the same time. So this stuff all reminds me of my early days in the hobby. Now, will I be able to actually get this to my table? We'll see.

I know what you mean. I would love to play the Lankhmar scenarios as they really are a lot of fun and really embed the Player Characters into the city. The good thing about is that the do work with two or three Player Characters.

This looks cool. I've wanted to run a retro-futurist, pseudo-Victorian Era adventure game for a long, long time. I've owned a copy of Space 1889 almost as long as I've been in the hobby. I've never had much luck finding others who were interested, sadly. I guess I haven't really tried since getting back into the hobby in 2019. The closest I've managed to play would be Castle Falkenstein and the original Deadlands. Not really the same thing. I actually just started Moorcock's The Steel Tsar last night. In spite of owning the trilogy for decades, I'd never gotten around to reading it.

This seems interesting. I've been thinking more and more over the last few years that Call of Cthulhu might work better as a one to one game. Certainly it could capture the vibe of the fiction more. I'm not sold on the Gumshoe system, but it's not too difficult to translate the scenarios and such over to Call of Cthulhu. Washington D.C. is definitely a profoundly under represented city. There's so much interesting stuff happening in the city in the 1910s through the 1930s, that would make very rich Mythos gaming material. I've run some Call of Cthulhu set in and around the Georgetown neighborhood (I had to work in the Krazy Kat Club once I found out about it). But the whole city has so much richness. If I had a game book in me, I think I'd write a Secrets of Washington D.C. for Call of Cthulhu. Sadly, I don't think I do have one in me.

As you mentioned, I came to the RPG by way of reading some (now all of) the series. I hope the next big book set in America gathers solid commercial support, as I’d like to see this CoC-light setting enjoy a long lifespan. I fear that Aaronovitch’s publisher won’t permit a third party case (adventure) ecosystem license, and in the current era of 3PP, that could be the game’s death sentence.
