A very sad and sombre story. I think he died within just a day or two.

I was up near the farm recently. It doesn't add up at all. There are a number of issues I have with the story from the accounts I have read and now seen here. There is no way Tommy at the age of 5 , after walking all day with his father is going up that mountain. The Soldiers and family would have found him in that area if he didn't go up the top, at that time of day and month it isn't fully dark . Also he would have been calling out to his father no doubt. Then we have the timescale that passes after he is found surely the blue suit wasn't faded overnight the grass isn't very long up there. Also its the best vantage point to look down on the valley to spot anything below if you are looking. The way in which the body was found too after a 'dream' is a bit suspect. About 2 years later 15 miles south another 5 yr old boy went missing in Abernant area of Aberdare after much searching by the whole community for 16 days, he was later found about 5-6 miles away up on top of Rhigos mountain by a hunting party , face down. Apparently he walked up there too.

There was another sad death around 1990 when a railway man from Burnley accompanied by his collie dog took a train to Builth Wells to go for a hike on the Brecon. He did not return for the train home. A search failed to find him but about six weeks later, a hiker on an obscure route discovered him dead with the dog barely alive keeping vigil. The poor dog died soon after attending his master's funeral. This story I came across about five years ago mentioned that a carved wooden figure of that brave dog was installed at Carnforth railway station but I now cannot find any thread on the tale. I have just sent a message to their website to make an enquiry. Were you ever aware of this sad story?

@@KILKennyLaDa9898-js2nr I haven’t heard of that one . I’ll have to have a look into it. It is a sad story and a very recent one. That’s a fair hike to Brecon from Builth. The other two mentioned above are 5 yr old boys. Two separate occasions 18 months apart roughly and 15 miles apart..Not out for a walk or kitted out for it the environment and the circumstances and situations of both arouse suspicion in my mind. Having walked to both places too. A few weeks back I visited the farm again and walked up to the lake . On the way up we could hear other walkers on either side of the mountain quite a distance from us in normal conversation . So someone shouting or crying would have been quite loud. It was quite windy on the day too.

@@4thworlds Ah, correction - it was from Llandrindod station, which is even further from the Brecons. Maybe it was to visit hills nearby. But I just checked online and the journey from Burnley via Crewe could easily be about six hours...arriving 11-00am approx. so he wouldn't have had more than 3-4 hours hiking time before making the return journey. Of course, around 1990, the journey times may have been slower. Still cannot find anything on the net about it though, very frustrating. Fingers crossed I soon get a message back from Carnforth station. Will let you know. OH BRILLIANT! I've just found it, I kept on scrolling...check...''BBC-Cumbria-Places-Tribute to devoted dog unveiled''. It was Graham Nuttall who sadly died in hills nearby, dog Ruswarp aged 14 nearby. It was a bronze carving at Garsdale station, he was a leading voice in keeping open the Settle to Carlisle railway. Couple of items also on YT. Incredibly sad, I'm blinking back the tears!

andrew daley Hi Andrew, do you have any good information that’s up to date, this story has really got to me and I’ve been searching the internet but can’t find anything but the story of him being lost, any info that might help me look into this would be great such as the searching at 3am and not 3pm.

I came from Italy to visit the pen y fan and its beauties. as I arrived at the top of the mountain I saw the obelisk of little Tommy, I never thought I'd run into this story so sad, that moved me. who knows what that child will have suffered. a prayer for him.
