Danny Kaye was the greatest. I grew up watching his movies and his TV show. I was enthralled by his every song and dance. I felt like we knew him very well. When he crossed over, as we Natives call it, I was heartbroken. Such a loss for us all.

This is one movie I always fall back on when I need a bit of nostalgia, born 9 years after the production of this classic I was happy to have seen the tail end of old New York and thrilled to have worked in the NYPD, QNS, and the Bronx!

If you check around 4:55 and watch til 5:44 there is actually a bit of comedic symbolism there. The chain reaction of everyone slapping each other, starting from the mayor and ending with the farmer's goat shows how the abuse from the hierarchy eventually seeps down into the citizens and its animals. Not only was it a genius way to display government power and how it affects the people, but they did it in a way that was funny and easy to digest! Can we please go back to a time when books and movies explained real-life complicated issues in a funny or engaging way?

Love these old black and white movies. Great storyline, excellent actor in William Powell and actress Carole Lombard, funny, romantic, absolutely nutty and a joy to watch. Thanks for the wonderful posting. Joe S

Classic Bette Davis, in a role she will play throughout her long and distinguished career. Powerful story of a man's obsession that nearly costs him his life, only to finally be free in the end. A movie classic that will endure for the ages. Joe S

*I've watched quite a few episodes of this show. Lucille Ball is a funny woman, but some of the humour in these episodes falls flatter than a plane. I'm not sure if hypnotism (or this particular woman) had a resurgence at the time of airing, but it's as entertaining as a sleeping clown. I say I've watched a few episodes, mainly in the hope that the writing, acting or both would improve. Nay. I also think that Lucy's home in this show was the same one as in 'Here's Lucy', too (but I could be wrong). I'm also guessing that the laughter/responses are all canned*

I've watched this precious movie on KZfaq several times, and I just LOVE it! I was born in the late 1940s and remember how life was in the early 1950s! Today in 2024 there is sooo much vulgarity in TV and films today, I only watch the vintage movies such as this one! I liked Barry Fitzgerald the best!!! He was EXCELLENT!!!

One of the best stories of the Film Noir era, with more realism from the locals than most. I hate to think how many great films were lost over the years- glad they saved this one from being an article only on Wikipedia.

If they hadn't made such great films about this era, nobody would believe or understand what it was really like. How and why people used to actually love a city.
