The ONLY thing wrong is "plastic" but it doesn't make YOU wrong, if it is what you want. The only wrong thing to do is to alienate someone because they can't read music.

Could you try reviewing those really cheap trumpet mouthpieces online? Some people don’t realize how much a difference a mouthpiece makes.

I actually have an $8 amazon mouthpiece from ages ago and have used it for years, maybe I don't know what I'm missing out on 😂. I got it because it's gold so I can easily tell it from the plethora of other mouthpieces at the school.

I wish my daughter's flute had come with a screwdriver! It got loose at her end of the year concert and no sound was coming out and she might not have been able to play if it wasn't that an oboist in her band had a screwdriver in HIS case and was able to tighten it down.

This seems to be the same as cheap guitars. The super cheap ones are usable, but around $200-300 is the sweet spot for a beginner, going off other comments. My first (and currently only) guitar was $240. It’s a real workhorse, probably has around 200-300 hours and a couple upgrades on it after 9 months or so and plays 10x better than it did when I got it. Have no idea about horns though because the only wind instrument experience I have was 3rd-5th grade mandatory recorder lol.

What trumpet do you recommend to those of us that aren't in a band, but want a good trumpet ? I've seen them from several hundred up to several thousands of dollars. What's the best trumpet you recommend ? I used to play the trumpet. Got my Grandpa's. He got it second hand from someone else. Even the case locks (But no keys) I got kicked out of band when they figured out I couldn't read music. Teach me to read music or let me play by ear, like I was. And I could read EGBDFAC but the notes confused me. No stem, stem up, stem down, hollow notes, solid notes, flagged notes 2 flags... Then notes that weren't even on the staff. Anyway just curious. My trumpet also did not have neither place on the slides to adjust. The adjustments were there but the rings and hardware were missing, and likely why I got singled out to play solo. Because I was slightly off pitch and when I didn't hear what to play, I couldn't play it. So that's how he caught me. And instead of being a teacher, he was just a jerk and threw me out of band. He could have at very least stay in class to learn, or teach me when other students weren't around. It still bothers me after all these years.
@MadMusicBand
@MadMusicBand 7 күн бұрын
That's a shame, I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. I didn't learn to read music until college, and it's not because I was unwilling to learn, I just wasn't ever expected to do it, which isn't great. As for trumpet it just depends on what you want to pay. Honestly, to try out trumpet again and get your feet wet I think this trumpet would work fine. If you had the money and know you were going to stick with it, is look for a student level Yamaha or something similar. Used you could find them under $500. That's what I learned on and used for many years until it finally died on me last year.

The mouthpiece is terrible, but your reed was too hard for the facing. More open facings require a softer reed. I have a clarineo (pretty cool little instrument for kids), and it comes with a size 1 read. I have to play on a size 2, but on my clarinet I play on a 3.5. Also, for best results, never use an old reed with a different mouthpiece. The mouthpiece changes it's shape
@MadMusicBand
@MadMusicBand 10 күн бұрын
I can believe that, but to be fair the reed they included with the mouthpiece didn't work either and was also a 2.5. The reed they send with the horn should be a guide for what works on the horn.

I’ve played this exact flute for over a year now and it’s a good flute, however if you are sensitive to metals/allergic to nickle (like me) it could a problem. Also not too long after playing it (like a couple of months) the nickle plating starts coming off and the flute doesn’t look as good, but it’s still functional. Overall it’s a very good beginners flute in my opinion.

It's so annoying how method books teach one fingering like its gospel truth when they are others. On clarinet, they teach middle E flat as 1 and 1, but 1,2, and side key is easier. Same with oboe. They teach forked F, but right 1 and 2 plus either left F or the F key between 2 and 3 is so much easier.
@MadMusicBand
@MadMusicBand 13 күн бұрын
I agree. That's something a band director can fill in the blanks, but many just won't know unless it's their instrument. By the time a student has learned their first version and used it a bit they typically fight ever using an alternate, so the earlier the better.

Largest issue I've seen and wondering on this one is not as much the low, but really higher end on the flute. On the cheap flute I could hear the pitch coming more shrill vs your old flute had fuller tone. My wife sadly lost her nice professional Germeinhardt, but then picked up a cheap Chinese made one that was like 300-400. No biggie at that time since just more on own for fun. But since I've rejoined a community group, she has also, and was also running into the higher notes becoming shrill. Of course the music we were playing almost all her notes where high, and made our dogs howl. We ended up taking the plunge and getting a new nice Yamaha for her (and dogs are happier), and that issue is gone. Now with that said, I swear, cheap flutes come with a nice cleaning rod! I swear, the higher end ones, they make it "fancier" by being metal, which shoving a metal rod down your flute where you can't see it vs plastic, at least the plastic will break before you mess something up lol. But of course band vs performer the sound quality matters differently. With the dwindling music stores makes it harder for kids to get used good instruments or affordable rentals. So it's become a two sided sword. But same hand, we just got a new trumpet player join, which he is going to college for jazz. I noticed he was playing on cheaper Chinese made trumpet, so I had him try my professional trumpet. He really wants one now, but did not have the heart to tell him how much that one costs. But seeing students getting to college level and being stuck in the instruments that can't perform at that level, made me look even more differently at these "cheap" instruments.
@MadMusicBand
@MadMusicBand 14 күн бұрын
Yea, you definitely get what you pay for, but it's tough when you just don't have the money to justify the expense. I feel for that college student, as I still don't have a high quality version of my main instrument (marimba). Sadly, I've never been able to drop 20k to get myself a professional level marimba, so I'm stuck with a practice marimba with no resonators. :/

It's a pity cheap bassoons don't seem to exist. After all if it's possible to make a usable clarinet for 100 it should be possible to make a usable bassoon for 300 or 400 but the cheapest Chinese ones are like 1000.

Even a good quality plastic one would be nice. If they can do it with bass clarinets, they should be able to do it with bassoons. I imagine the conical bore of a bassoon is harder to make than a straight cylinder like a clarinet, and bassoons also have that weird "bump" where your left hand goes.
@Murgoh
@Murgoh 13 күн бұрын
@@pikachuchujelly7628 Yes, it would be much easier to make the complex shapes of a bassoon in plastic than in wood. but the initial design- and mold cost would be high. I guess bassoon is such a rare and challenging instrument there is not enough demand for an affordable "student" bassoon to justify the initial cost of making one in plastic. Even the cheapest Chinese ones seem to be made of wood. After all I guess there are not that many people like me who would buy one "just for fun", to try to teach themselves to play it at some level and those who are serious about the instrument will either invest the funds needed for a quality one or maybe get on for loan at their school/music academy. I guess for every bassoon sold in the world there are hundreds of clarinets, flutes, trumpets, violins, saxophones etc. and maybe thousands of guitars, recorders, harmonicas etc. So it comes to volume of production and return on investment. I believe it might be possible to 3D-print one but it would be an enormous task to make the model so if someone did do that they probably would not publish their work for free.
