Koreans are the most "American worshipping" race on earth. No other races come close (Chinese and Taiwanese rank behind). American citizenship in itself is seen as the highest form of social status, far higher than wealth, good schools and career. It's sad that this group see themselves as inferior and compete to become more American than each other. That explains the desperate attempt to migrate to America at all cost in Korean society and placing insane premium on everything that is deemed American, even a spoken accent

I got way more job interviews when I was back stateside. In Korea many companies didnt want to deal with the time difference. Also LinkedIn SUCKS. I suggest finding interesting companies on LinkedIn BUT go to the company site and apply directly to their career page. Remove the middleman.

Loved this so much. Thank you :) May I kindly ask if both refs can be from a lecturers or it needs to be one from Uni and the Other from Previous Employer?

I believe it’s possible to get two letters from two lectures from the same uni, if you don’t have any work experience. But I’m not 100% sure since it’s been 4 years since I did my application. I’d advise you to contact EPIK for a more reliable answer

Hi Letty - just to share I am an experienced finance professional and I had almost exactly the same experience you described trying to use LinkedIn and Indeed to apply for jobs. To be honest it’s hard to tell if those jobs are all real. What eventually worked for me was 1. Reaching out to my network. People I studied with or worked with before and letting them know what kind of roles I was looking for. Those same people you studied with might be the entry point to you getting an interview at the company of your dreams. 2. Reaching out to executives or managers at the companies that I was interested in working at directly. (Only reason I would keep paying for LinkedIn premium personally) and selling myself and my story. Sometimes these people are able to sense someone with the right energy and drive even when you might not have all the experience in the world and they often have the ability to make hiring decisions. 3. I had to keep reminding myself that most companies short list with ai search engines looking for key words. So me not getting shortlisted may have nothing to do with my experience and just that my application got filtered out and was never seen by a human being. Taking the more human approach ensures that someone will see your cv at least. And even if they can’t hire you for the first job you applied for they can keep you in mind for later jobs. Or refer you to other people. 4. I reached out to smaller companies (often startups) and offered to support them for a few days a week on a pro bono basis to keep my experience current and that quickly turned into paid freelance work which also expanded my network in the spaces that I was hoping to work in. All the best!

Linkedin isn't for the fainthearted😅. Thanks for being open and vulnerable with us. I feel the same, and it's an especially difficult situation if you are living in a foreign country, you have to think about either moving back home, staying where you are ,or moving to a third country, weighing the pros and cons is what keeps me up at night 😔

Hi Letty, try enrolling for Honours/Masters online, learn a new language (maybe European languages, they have free Universities, and the job opportunities are available). Also you can leverage your Korean speaking skills in different fields. But whichever way, I hope you accomplish what you have in mind!❤️

This video landed at the right time. Goodness this life is a reflection of choosing your battles and this life truly isn’t easy. The constant worrying of what’s to come or what’s missed really hits and as much as you have support from loved ones, you’re still all you’ve got. Watching this validated me and made me feel I am not the only one feeling this way. Thank you for sharing. I hope you find what you’re looking for, whenever and whatever that may be❤

Our path are different and I support your view when you say that Linkedin can make you feel like you are not moving or your life is stagnant. I also concur with your parent when she said we tend to ignore what we have at the moment while we pursue our desires. Anyways I enjoyed the sit down and I reasonated with it alot.

This was insightful. I can relate and I was lucky enough to make it out earlier, especially as a qualified teacher. My heart is still sore that I left Korea, but I know it was a good decision for my teaching career. I say stay there until your next step! I’ve been home for a few months, I will say that ITS TOUGH IF YOU ARE FINANCIALLY TEKATEKING! Also SA depends on where you live honestly, it can be terrible or good.Like it can be reaaaallly tough!! (As I’m typing this, I hope the post will eventually load because of terrible network in my village 😂)And in terms of peers, honestly everyone is just doing their own thing as much as you’ve been doing your own thing. Honour your path and navigate it in its own unique way. Although there’s no growth in teaching ESL in Korea, the experience gained, mindset, personal growth and self discovery gained is enough to make you realize how much more you’re capable of and what else you can do! Your brain just operates at a different level!Don’t be discouraged while you “ wait” /seek for the next opportunity! I personally came back for a few months while I wait to start my next job, I’ve tried a few things particularly in business ( I know this isn’t for everyone)and I haven’t been so successful…but I’m not discouraged by the current failures, I’m learning a lot about myself and who I have become (after Korea/my first move abroad)! Keep developing yourself and evolving! It all works out in the end, IF you don’t give up on yourself!Fighting!!!!saaraangheeyoooo!!❤❤❤

Thank you for talking about this, I feel it's relevant to any job you may have in your career path but essential to ESL/EFL teaching. We sometimes forget that LinkedIn is still a social media platform and the pitfalls of negatively comparing ourselves to our peers or placing their achievements on a pedestal. You've done an amazing job at achieving your goals, you were persistent with wanting to make it to Korea even when covid was showing us flames. Creating a safe space for information on the Epik career path and being a source of guidance to others. These are but some of the achievements you've worked for (cause I don't know you personally can't speak to other areas of your life). Nobody gave it to you. You're a multi-hyphenated person. Sincerely wish you all the best in pursuing your transition to the next field (you will make it, there's a good track record backing you up)... we'll still be here in our space of the internet rooting for you ❤

Currently in the same boat I’ve been Korea for almost two years now , I’ve been applying for jobs , I don’t know if I should start a new course, apply for remote jobs or just stay in Korea, but staying in Korea is also not easy , things are becoming more expensive and we end up not even saving enough, the struggle is real love and light everyone ❤️

Hey Letty Maps ❤ thank you for highlighting this because it's really important to have a contingency plan when you take a gap from the job market. I'd just like to add, if I may, that age could also play a factor in your decision-making process... I've been going through the most and had to consider the cons if I decided to sign another contract considering that I'm almost 35 and may find it difficult to get back into it once I go home. It is unfortunate that ESL teaching is not considered as part of work experience once we job hunt in respective fields, but it's the reality we face. As someone who went through it, this segment resonates deeply and I'm so happy to see content that doesn't only highlight the pros of teaching abroad but also the possible implications it may have on your professional wellbeing. Linked in is... ja 😅 I prefer Pnet 😊 Fighting 🫶🏻
