The explanation of the power of the Sharps rifle brings new meaning to the term "sharpshooter". Mr. Rafiner's description of President Harry Truman's possible inspiration for the Marshall Plan moved me to tears. Any person who cavalierly calls for a new civil war does not know one single thing about the horrors of war and the ruin that follows in its wake.

20,000 marched out of Mo due to Order No 11. Bull.! Theis guy has done no real new research. If he wants to cover 1854 to 1870 he needs to cover non-military reasons why the 20,000 was really just 9,000. Such as the massive multi-year drought. He mentioned all the destruction before No. 11, but didn't say what military units did what. Confederates burned Butler in July 1863. They probably did a lot of other things as well that he by his silence implies was done by the Union. He also does not take into account that Jasper County (outside the Burnt District) had the same population loss and population rebound after the war. He talks about silence, but George Caleb BIngham and others have kept the story of poor miserable Missourians suffering. THere was suffering, there are a bunch of books out there that have those stories. His is another one, but proving anything or truly explaining why ends up being a Confederate sympathy program. Was hoping he actually did more than simply trace family stories which any historian knows have to be verified. He may have researched and verified it in his book, but this talk does not encourage me to buy his book, which I was hoping would be a well research history of who destroyed what and what truly influenced over half the population to leave before Order No 11 was issued.
