This is a good guide & I've just done this mod myself (2 years later), however it looks to me like you've wired the clock generator SCL & SDA to pins 26 & 27 instead of 26 & 25 on the Myson Controller MTV230? I think they should line up with R10 & R37 next to it.

It's too bad that the USA never got the Sega Neptune in retail stores, but, no! The Neptune got canceled because of the Sega Saturn! If you have a Sega Neptune, then you don't need a Sega Genesis and a Sega 32X add-on for it. And if you have a Sega CDX or any other type of stand-alone Sega CD/Sega Genesis 2-in-1 console, then you don't need a Sega Genesis model 1 or a Sega Genesis model 2 and you don't need a Sega CD model 1 or a Sega CD model 2 add-on for either Sega Genesis model.

On the end opposite the battery side of the timekeeper chip is the 32.768kHz quartz crystal oscillator. When taking measures to expose and remove the battery, be very careful not to go too far on the other half of the top of the timekeeper to avoid the risk of destroying the oscillator. Without the oscillator, while the timekeeper will keep the time, date, and data in memory, the timekeeper's internal clock will not run when the CDI unit is off. So, if it was turned off at 12:30 PM, the clock will freeze on 12:30 PM until the unit is on again. This doesn't sound like a big deal, but it can be; the system may not behave correctly without a fully working timekeeper. The chip must be able to keep time as well as save data. Fortunately, it's relatively easy to fix this if you do manage to damage or destroy the oscillator. Just remove the old oscillator like you did the battery and solder in a new oscillator, which isn't expensive.

I’m one of those people who broke their ps2 trying to clean it out. It broke my heart and discouraged me from modding and cleaning machines but I’ve gotten over it now and have successfully modded quite a few consoles. This is one mod I want to do more than anything but really scared of breaking another ps2 or wasting money on the retro gem because it’s quite pricy. Is there another HDMI mod for another console that would be a bit easier, and possibly help practice for this one?

A VERY tiny correction, but while the PS3 had HDMI out of the box, at first the 360 only had analog too, though it supported full RGBHV through VGA as well as component. It wasn't until the later "Elite" model that they finally provided digital HDMI output. Still, it's a very tiny nitpic since the majority of the 360's lifespan, it had that port post- Elite. Not to mention there's very few of those pre-Elite consoles still in working order for red ring reasons...

This is subjectively better than the OSSC if you’re playing games that constantly switch resolution and use interlaced signals. The OSSC’s line doubler really does look nice for pixel games but adds a pixelated effect over 3D games. I use the GBSC into an OSSC for the best of both. My mega drive and snes go directly into the OSSC but my Saturn, dreamcast, ps1 and ps2 go into the GBSC. I output them video through VGA at 480p and upscale 2x using the OSSC. That seems to be the sweet spot for me but ultimately I do this purely to convert the interlaced signal using the GBSC, not for a clean image but for a consistent one. Handles great with the elgato 4K.

when you compare the Retrotink 5x pro to all of the HDMI mods that people spend a ton of money for each console then the 5x Pro is a no brainer. It is much better, plug and play and guaranteed to save a few consoles every year. Total up the cost of HDMI mods of all the various consoles and you will see the difference
@LIRetroGaming
@LIRetroGaming 20 күн бұрын
I think it depends a lot on the setup. If you have 10+ consoles the tink5x or another scaler is the best way to go. But if you have only a few retro consoles, or if you’re moving them around to different locations, then the hdmi mods are a great option. I have both mainly because I bring my consoles with me to events all the time and direct hdmi at a venue is much better

I know this video is older but I'm working on an X'Eye right now and was curious if you had seen this: System boots up fine (has new region free BIOS and FRAM) and plays genesis carts ok, but doesnt even attempt to spin disc. Have tried multiple lasers (one replacement and was sure to remove anti static blob). I verified the lid switch / sensor is working ok as the dashboard switches from insert disc to checking disc as soon as I close tray or if i push it down by finger. This was also confirmed using test point pin on the CD board, it changes between 0V and 5V when the switch is activated or deactivated. I can see the red laser for a brief moment or two when first closing tray, but absolutely NO life in either motor, for the spindle or the feed. I separated the CD Drive from the system and wired up 5V direct to the motors and they activated ,so i know the motors are good. When system is plugged in and turned on (and lid switch depressed, im only seeing .900 volts on the motor terminals I verified that IC691 is showing correct voltage for laser on / off on pin 48. The only thing "off" is that supposedly Pin 4 of IC601 is supposed to show 5V to be fed to spindle motor as step 4 of the CD operation flow chart. Im getting around 2 and a half volts. So I'm considering ordering a replacement IC chip Sony CXD2500BQ but I'm not 100% confident thats the issue, I dont have a working Xeye to compare voltages. Just was curious if you had ever seen an Xeye that wouldnt spin discs and it wasnt a lid sensor issue. System has also been deep cleaned and fully recapped
@Elecyview
@Elecyview 8 күн бұрын
I'm guessing you tried cleaning the laser eye with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol?. Also did you try manually pulling the sled away from the spindle and see if bootup brings it back to the middle? You may have to adjust the laser eye ohm pot as these laser can get weaker as time goes by (or sometimes someone else fiddles with it). But try to take a reading before you adjust so you can always set it back. (I had one that wouldn' read disks recently and just turning it 1mm fixed it right up.
@LedZepFan7183
@LedZepFan7183 8 күн бұрын
@@Elecyview interesting... So as someone that doesnt really mess with optical drives much a failing/dead laser will prevent the spindle from working too? As in during the process does it only spin up if the laser can see a disc is inserted? No, i can have the sled all the way towards the outside and it never tries moving the sled. Havent messed with POTS but I can take readings using my multimeter and try
@Elecyview
@Elecyview 8 күн бұрын
@@LedZepFan7183 I'm not an expert, but in my experience (gamecube laser eyes and a few playstations and now this JVC) The first thing that happens is the eye tries to focus a beam and get a reflection back to detect if there's a disc there that it can read, then it will try spinning up if there is. That way the motor never activates if there's no disk in there. It's not a guarantee that is what is happening here, but if you've had the lid off and can SEE the red beam then its trying to read the disk. But it's wierd if you pull the sled out and it doesn't auto track it back to the center when you turn it on with the lid closed. (mine at least did that when it wasn't reading the cd's yet). So that could be some kind of issue with your measurements of the current you're seeing? If you want to adjust the laser pot, There is one directly under the laser eye itself, you can see it from the 'back' of the laser unit after you take the black metal shield off the top (3 screws and occasionally these posts break off at the base over time if the console is jostled around a bit, so sometimes you can just pull this off without undoing the screws.) but there should be a single adjustable pot on that laser assembly. (it is not the 4 or 5 that are on the cd circuit board that houses the karaoke jacks). For me I turned it about 1mm very very slight to the right. I don't have my exact values handy, but I believe this dropped my resistance by 100 ohms and that immediately fixed the issue with my first system. I didn't tweak much beyond that. Just makes sure you write down the current ohm reading so you can always put it back there if you go too far.. And make micro adjustments.. it should never be more than an 'hours' worth if you looked at this dial like a clock, if that makes sense (never go from 12 to 1, that's a big adjustment for this kind of thing). Just micro adjustments. This may not even fix the issue or even be the issue, but it is something you could try if you get exhausted of everything else. But the sled not returning is concerned, as I believe that should happen regardless if there's a cd in there or not... Again i'm not a pro. Just a hobbiest.

One thing that confuses me a bit in Borti's instructions on GitHub pertains to adding resistance for a brightness fix to prevent it from looking too washed out. I see Borti added those resistors to the board, (R11, R21 and R31) so you don't have to reuse other resistors on the SNES board. The part that confuses me, is - are those resistors part of the circuit by default? His instructions still mention that you can still grab resistors elsewhere if you want, but also says: "seems to be a good choice. By replacing R3 on the SNES mainboard you must not use the brightness correction resistors R11, R21 and R31 on the modding board." So are R11, R21, R31 on the PCB not actually doing anything by default (How else would you 'not use them'?). Are you expected to do some soldering to 'use' those three resistors he built-in?
