You actually can take the camshaft off without breaking the chain. I manage to take off the waterpump wheel, and the bearing behind and remove the camshaft. But if you are changing the piston, top, cylinder, etc…. You have to break the chain, cause its placed in 2 different channels through the top and the engine block

Hi there, looks a great bike. I’ve just rescued a black 1998 Steamer but the old spoked wheels are done for. I noticed you mentioned Daytona wheels? Would you possibly be able to help out and advise which ones you recommend to swap out with please? Which model/year? And would these be a straight swap? Really appreciate any help you can offer. I’ve looked for replacement spoked ones and if you can find them they cost an arm and a leg and still need attention, and a rebuild/respoke is a pricey affair. Once again thank you.

Sorry but I couldn't follow your video at all as the camera wasn't really showing hoe you were doing things, it would have been better to have had the camera on a tripod and to hold the carb to it instead if the other way round because when you were doing something the camera wasn't showing it.😞

Thanks for your detailed explanation, and your good engineering skill, I know I couldn't do this, I would trip up somewhere. Thanks for demystifying the sprag.

Hi I'm thinking of buying a 97 MK1 Thunderbird Sport. I've heard about sprag clutch problems on them. Could you tell me which years they had the access panel up top. Thanks.
@d13dkt
@d13dkt Жыл бұрын
Hi there, I believe the the thunderbird sport all had the engine with no access panel. The biggest cause of the sprag failing is trying to start the bike with a weak battery, if you alway have a staring or fully charged battery, you should never have this issue.

This video is incorrect. I got the chain off the cam on my 2007 525 RFS. You need to remove the water pump impeller, then remove both cam sprocket bolts, then both cam bearings. This can all be done with hand tools, the bearings are NOT press fitted on! Once the bearings are off and the cam sprocket is as low as possible, you can just barely slide the cam chain off. Maybe if you have a new chain that isn't stretched it won't work. But it worked for me with 10k miles on the chain.

Good to hear it worked out well, certainly eye catching but still a Steamer, nice job. I've found Delkevic's loud even with the baffles in, Motad used to add a witches hat on the can inlet side too. Should be a hoot to ride.

The short stroke engines (750/3 & 1000/4) are spec'd at 11:1 compared to all the 885/3 & 1200/4 (Trophy) which are 10.6:1. Only the Super III and 1200 Daytona had a 12:1 ratio, they use the short stroke pistons but I'm guessing they may also use different con rods, not quite sure from the part numbers. Going together nicely, well done.

In case you're not aware, there is a tiny "chef's hat" filter inside the T piece of the fuel feeder, it often gets forgotten about. If you jet it up and find it doesn't do what you expect at WOT, it may be worth considering a twin T feed like the T300's. Looking forward to seeing her running and all the mods you've done. All the best for the New Year.

Quick tip. There is a very thin shim behind the large washer, it often sticks and is easily lost, or you find it and don't know where it came from.

I've had the screw on the clutch end of the alternator drive snap, it didn't "shear" though, it was a tensile break (Trophy) break was just short of the shaft end thread. I was a bit confused with the T300 titles and you talking about a Steamer as they are T400's but then I spotted how much you'd modified it. I'll have to go back and watch your older uploads now.

Would you happen to know where I can find a master link for the cam chain? I have a 525 Polaris outlaw 2007, and having a hard time finding a master link for the cam chain so I can change the gaskets
@clayboi6939
@clayboi6939 2 жыл бұрын
no such thing as a master link for a cam chain. They are riveted together all the way around. The cam has to be removed from the head before the head can come off. watch a video on your specific motor or get a service manual that will tell you the step by step
@Trumplican
@Trumplican 2 жыл бұрын
@@clayboi6939 on these engines there is. Well its the same as the rest of the links but it comes with the plates and two pins and has to be pressed on and the pins have to be peened on the ends. But without getting technical he is asking a valid question because you do need a new link when you reassemble these engines because you have to either cut a cam chain link or press one apart to remove the cylinder head.

Is it possible to replace the cam chain without removing the cylinder? my thought is to break the chain, and fish a new one through as I remove the old one. I don't want to remove the cylinder though. Has anyone ever done this?

Your video is wrong as far as taking cam off. But right on as far as taking the head off. The chain has to be broken. Now way around it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

you can unbolt the sprocket and get enough slack to roll the chain around the sprocket

@@Trumplican I'm going to check the service manual and see what ktm thinks, because I really don't know and I just did a tear down on one of these engines, and the cam chain definitely needed to be cut.
@Trumplican
@Trumplican 2 жыл бұрын
@@QuantumMotorWorks did i say to remove the cam? he said in the video he couldnt adjust the timing without cutting the chain, that is false. Also, you might have to do such a thing if you originally failed to correctly set the timing. Also any mechanic knows just because the book doesnt mention doesnt mean it cant be done. The fact you even had to look at the book to figure this out shows you do not understand the mechanics of this engine. Ive been a powersports mechanic for most of my life and Ive built multiple KTM RFS engines that make over 70 horsepower so I can tell you unequivocally you can adjust the timing without cutting the cam chain and would be a fool to cut it in fact.

@@QuantumMotorWorks what makes you think they arent manufactured as well? Because you dont understand how they work?
@Trumplican
@Trumplican 2 жыл бұрын
@@QuantumMotorWorks so you now admit you can take the chain off the sprocket before cutting it? And no youre not supposed to cut it your supposed to use the cam chain tool that pushes the pins out but nice job heating the adjoining links so that they are probably now weak.

hi there marco, i see how you did that but the bearing you removed to allow the cam to drop is suppose to be pressed onto that shaft and not removable by hand. when i rebuilt my cam with new bearings the were a tight interferance fit to get back on, i think if your bearing came off that easy you may have some issues with the cam.
