The M8s used on Shore Line East are newer ones that are owned by ConnDOT alone, not jointly with NY. They are not used on the New Haven Line. They have had their third rail shoes removed, and therefore can not operate into Grand Central Terminal, or anywhere west of Pelham.

I thought all the M8s are part of a larger fleet that are jointly owned with the MTA? As in maybe they're not used by MTA but they are still owned by them? Wasn't really clear when I was researching.

It was never called the "H&NH". Also, they didn't build the line to Boston; the part between Boston and Springfield was constructed by the Boston & Albany Railroad.

Thanks for the comment! I did some more digging around - prior to the NYNH&H, there were two railroads: the New York and New Haven railroad (which owned the portion from NY to New Haven) and the Hartford and New Haven (H&NH) Railroad that owned and built the route from New Haven to Springfield via Hartford. Let me know what you think!

$175 BILLION is an insanely large amount of money to spend on a single train corridor, especially one that already exists. The inflation adjusted cost of the ENTIRE original Interstate Highway System is $500 billion. This is the best investment in USA transportation ever. From San Francisco to LA is about 400 miles, and CAHSR will likely spend $160 billion ($400 million per mile). Highway construction is about $2.6 million per lane-mile, a six-lane freeway therefore costing $15 million per mile. Note that the estimated cost of extending Caltrain/CAHSR from where it presently ends in SF (4th and King) 2.2 miles to the ALREADY BUILT WITH A TRAIN BOX Salesforce Tower is $6.8 BILLION ($3 BILLION per mile).

3:06 "shooting upwards of 100 ⁰F for days on end" but the TV screenshot at 3:09 shows Central Park having a peak **heat index** of 96 ⁰F even Newark Airport, a local hot spot, only hit 100 ⁰F (air temperature) just once so far, on 22 June given the overhead power lines can start sagging well below 100 ⁰F, it doesn't help to exaggerate...

Summer of 2011, one day in July, the new haven line of Metro North suffered catrastriphic failure due to overhead loosening due to heat. Some trains were stuck with no power, no air conditioning, no ventilation in the middle of nowhere in intense heat during rush hour (so trains full) until trains behind could be cleared and a diesel shunter could get to them and bring then to the next station. I beleive after that, the overhead wires were updated to have weights instead of springs to provide the tension even in hot weather. Surprised this wasn't done to the new York to Trenton line.

I was caught up in this mess. I was just about to enter the subway @157th when exiting commuters told me that nothing was running and to turn around. I immediately caught a southbound bus, but within a matter of a few stops the bus was jammed to capacity, forced to bypass more riders attempting to board. It took over an hour to get back to Columbus Circle. Visitors to NYC, who often are infrequent users of its transit systems, have no idea how critical they are to the daily functioning of the city.

In Japan/Germany/France, high speed trains are like 16 cars long. Why do we put up with such puny Acela trains, when they could serve so many more people and have more affordable fares if the trains were longer? We keep doing little piecemeal things.

Exactly. Having live in 2 other 3 countries mentioned they are so far ahead in terms of public transport If your stations happen to not be long enough for 16 car trains then you'll have to compensate with increased frequency. Doing neither makes no sense

To clarify the East of Hudson lines: The Hudson line begins at milepost 0.0 in Grand Central Terminal and heads north to Poughkeepsie NY ending at the Division Post (with Amtrak) at CP 75. The Harlem line branches off the Hudson line at milepost 5 at Mott Haven Junction (CP 5) and heads north to Wassaic NY ending at CP 182. The New Haven line branches off the Harlem line at milepost 12 (CP 112) and heads east to New Haven CT and ends at the Division Post (Amtrak) at CP 274.

For decades, NJ transit has been exploring the possibility of a mid state commuter line that runs through western Monmouth and Ocean counites using the old Blue Comet route. They should be working on restoring that route for commuter service and potential Atlantic City and Philadelphia Express services. The rights of way still exist but are in need of major reconstruction and upgrades to meet modern track standards. It could also take a load of the North East Corridor Line.

The Main Line is a combination of the former Lackawanna Main Line & Erie Main Line. The Erie Main Line ran through Rutherford into downtown Passaic into Paterson. The Lackawanna Main Line ran through Lyndhurst into Passaic Park to Paterson. This changed in the early 1960s with the merger of Erie & Lackawanna and the closure Erie line through downtown Passaic and the closure of the Lackawanna line for the construction of Interstate 80.

The opportunity that has been lost was to, first, move MSG to the Post Office building and then build a new Penn Station on the original site between Seventh and Eighth Avenues. While acknowledging its dazzling history, MSG is a dated facility - a bowl whose seating rises away from the main floor ending up with seats that, I'm guessing, might be the furthest away of any major arena in North America. A new arena is needed for and befitting New York City. Meanwhile, some of the problems with Moynahan Hall (I admit that it is beautiful) is that it doesn't have access to all of the tracks underneath it, it lacks a taxi / bus drop off zone (the existing Penn Station had one running from 32nd to 33rd Streets until MSG closed it off), and it's entrances are on northbound Eighth Avenue when I would bet that most passengers are coming from north of the station - and thus would be better served with a drop-off on southbound Seventh Avenue.

While i don’t think it’s as beautiful as the old penn station, the train hall is beautiful af. Not only that but it still serves its original purpose as a post office/mail sorting tool come extent. Funny how Amtrak got rid of mail cargo but now one of thier main stations is a former post office

the downeaster service from Boston North Station to Brunswick (Maine) should be extended to connect Toronto and Montreal on an electrified line, using leftover northeast regional trains and Amtrak airo trains, bringing more service to both areas, as North Station has a bigger potential capacity.

The biggest thing they could do is connect Boston North and South stations, allowing one-seat trips instead of transfering in Boston. This was recommended by planners during the Big Dig but was rejected. Now with the soaring costs it probably will never get done.
