Apparently, this song is difficult for a first hearing video. The egocentric parents in every line show that everything is about themselves, and there is little room for the daughter’s fun, or anything else. The mother, first recognizing the daughter may be gone, shows the parents’ narcissism early on with ironic line, “We never thought of ourselves.” Isn’t that what the line is immediately doing? I have always wondered why the Beatles chose the word “fun” (as the only thing money can’t buy) instead of love or something else. Perhaps, it is a commentary of how their own success was increasingly becoming less and less fun?

I enjoyed watching your reaction it was genuine, not judging just feeling the emotion he's trying to summon for the performance.

I got this album when I was 12 years old. I loved the song, but that age never paid much attention to the words and was not emotional. Not at 68 years old I cry like a baby.

Don't apologize for crying. We're all joining you! This song is particularly sad when you realize that her marriage had failed by that point and she didn't live much longer. She probably had a tough time singing this one when she had been betrayed by her husband and I bet she didn't feel much love for him anymore. This was a scratch vocal and Richard had to add background vocals and orchestration to turn it into this beautiful finished product.

The key to the song is "...something inside that was always denied for so many years..." Not things. Love. Personal recognition.

Scarborough Fair was a annual event that started in Medieval days when a fair was granted by one of the Kings. It was the longest in England at 44 days, when most towns had fairs of usually 7 days. Goods from all over Europe were traded at the fair, on the sea shore in the North Yorkshire town, including oriental spices, cloth, & much wine, while Scarborough made pottery was exported, along with wool & other local produce, all around the North Sea coasts. The song calls for the lover to complete several impossible tasks, & the herbs mentioned are all associated with Love, Loss, & Death. It dates in origin to the high period of the Fair in the 14th century. Most such fairs were ended in the 18th or early 19th centuries, because they had become associated with rowdiness, trouble & riots, but also political assemblies at a time when these were suspected of subversion.

Steve Hackett's guitar moves me to tears every - single - time. From the first note! Countless times. Such perfection from the whole band... the bass pedals and mellotron at just the perfect time. How they did it and where it came from will remain a beautiful mystery.
