I’ve started shooting in portrait just holding my camera in one hand as if I was merely carrying it. Believe me by doing this, no one knows you are shooting them. With my Z8 and 20mm S I can shoot silently in bursts. It’s been game changing for my street photography.

I always shoot by bringing the camera up to my eye level. But I just watched a video of a photographer who shoots from the hip and oh boy, his photos were so organic and the compositions were amazing (whether it’s cropped or not). So I’m definitely going to try it. That video made me realize it’s the end product/photo that matters. Not the approach used.

Wow, this was an amazing talk! So much important stuff... I loved every second of it! Mesmerizing! :) Got a lot of topics to think about, especially about how photography being broadly presented on YT. Art kinda became more accessible, but at the same time too much of its core got lost. I see it like that: today we have lots of new photographers, studying their art from a technical side, buying the best equipment. But, they're doubting their thing, because it is artistically hollow, although technically "correct". Tons of similar images of similar things, spreading seemingly "correct" ways to shoot. Otherwise - people ask - why would they be so popular? Ain't the popularity equals success? Also, I don't think that rise of generative AI is a coincidence. It is a part of a trend called "getting rid of struggle". Between the beginner and a self-actualized artist, there is a gap called "struggle". AI may promise the same thing that expensive camera does - to erase the struggle on your way to results. It is "faster" and "easier" to watch couple of videos, buy some gear and courses... But it seems for me, that we don't really value art by itself, we value that it was made by a human being. "Isn't it cool that someone made that?" - maybe that's the main question rising in our head in front of a beautiful picture? Maybe we are inspired because we know - we are a human too? And that's why "real" art heals society, it reminds us of our own inner beauty. When art is wrapped in soul, when we have passed it through ourselves, then it acquires uniqueness, a spark was put in it. AI may create cool pictures, but it didn't went through all this way. So it feels like a complex math, not a beautiful summer morning with a cup of warm, delicious tea. We need to teach people how to feel their art more. That it is about inner feeling. Otherwise, horizon will stay perfectly corrected (boring) forever. Just some of my thoughts, thanks for your time and have a great day!

@@dondekeeper2943 because it's more intuitive. I don't switch my tiny brain on. If you take a few 1000 pictures "from the hip" you know exactly where your camera is pointing.

This is also a story of the long and awful history of the democrat party starting with slavery, civil rights in the 60s and the mass jailing of journalists during the Wilson presidency. And now the two standards of enforcing the law.

Love, love, love this episode and have been listening to your podcast off and on for about 4 years. Jason Langer's idea of the creative spiral was especially enlightening to me. I will be thinking for many days to come about what my recurrent themes are and how I can apply these themes to help me express my unique understanding of life in my artwork. Although I am not a photographer I really enjoy hearing your guests talk about their creative processes. Your interviewing style is very engaging and keeps me coming back for a listen.

Nice video mate. One way I heard Eggleston describe his photos is “life today”, and that’s exactly what they are. The photos don’t have titles, that imparts a thought process of the creator and dictates how someone sees the image, neither of which are needed, it’s just “life today” and make of it what you will.

I really enjoy listening to this podcast, for me it not just about photography, it’s also story’s of people finding their purpose in life, which could apply to any profession. This story reminds me of a friend who is a photography teacher in Las Vegas college who is an amazing photographer, but also has an amazing story of his life. Tony Gómez-Morales explores cultural identity through cowboys and wrestlers, Anyway, thanks for your podcast.

Lovely episode #600 WOW. So true about needing the correct lighting, background, f/stop, shutter speed, etc. We need to get out of our own way, and recall (like you said) when film was used at 100, 200, 400, 800 ISO's. You took a photo of what was given you. Made me think about what Addison Skurlock had to deal with back in the days he was photographing.

If they’re choosing to sleep on top of a pile of trash on a busy street corner, intersection or public sidewalk they are forfeiting their right to privacy. If they don’t want to be seen they could go to a shelter or rehabilitation center The argument of not taking a photo of anyone less fortunate than yourself is nonsense in my opinion.

Those were difficult times putting it mildly. One needs to be open-minded; to grow, learn and understand other cultures/ethnicities. A person's acceptance/understanding of other cultures/ethnicities is their freedom of option. Overthhinking a situation can be both helpful and harmful. Analyze the options and trust your instincts. Finally, don't lose your identity to be accepted by others. Be confident with who you are and what you want to do with your life. This is what many of our famous artists had to do.
