Personally I think the modem footballer seems to be more committed to their domestic clubs. Almost as though they're too scared to give 100% for England in case they can't give 100% for their Champions League team

England players just don't care. They think of playing for England like playing for a club. There is no pride or patriotism in what they are doing. I suspect many of them don't even fully comprehend what they are doing. It's like they know there is a "status" in playing for their country, but they don't know why they are doing it beyond that.
