Hi Kanishka, Players take turns rolling three dice. They use the dice to make combinations of numbers (adding subtracting) to make a multiplication problem. The answer to that multiplication problem should be one of the gears for the car. 1st gear means move one space, 2nd two spaces, 3rd three spaces, 4th four spaces. First around the track wins.

Do reach out to your instructors in your program- they can look over your submission and give you some feedback. If you come across a specific question I might help with, do send it along. Johnnie

Oh! This is the "Old Math" in Tom Lehrers song about "The New Math". Funny how you call what Tom considered "new math" the "traditional method" and present what in 1965 was "how math was taught" as an alternative!

I teach at the University where Tom have taught for decades- he is quite old now. The alternative is always just somebody else's way of doing things- there is always somebody else's way of doing things for every "traditional method"

The California Teacher’s Association recently had a very critical write up on the Cal TPA and there is a bill submitted to the CA assembly to eliminate the Cal TPA. I’m early in the process of completing cycle 1, but this critique is helpful as knowing the flaws of your enemy is helpful in bringing them down, or in this case getting past the gatekeeper that is the Cal TPA.

It is at once comforting and upsetting to know that all the problems I have picked out of the CAL TPA... are represented here. That they don't practice what they preach at all, that they just want canned garbage, that its bad for the students, that its word salad over load of concepts, and that it feels like it wants me to fail. I'm mid Cycle 2 and I'm just trying to not quit completely. I've spent two weeks hammering my keyboard with complete garbage writing poorly representing ideas that arent bad on their own but in how the CALTPA is demanding I use them are worthless. Hazing. That is what the CAL TPA feels like. And I have a decent advisor for my CAL TPA. Not as awesome as you sound like, but still.

Thank you for providing this guide!! I am hoping you can answer a few questions: 1. Does each lesson in the lesson segment have to have a different CA content standard or can we have one overarching CA Content standard and different content learning goals for each lesson? 2. Does each lesson in the lesson segment need to have examples of all three assessments or can we have one for each lesson?

Ha ha, you're preaching to the choir! When I did student teaching, I had to deal with a very wild and very rowdy classroom that had just come back from the covid lockdown. This was a pretty rough test in classroom management, and I realized then that the absolute first thing you have to be able to do as a teacher is to get a rowdy classroom under control. This wasn't really dealt with the CALTPA. The most critical lessons in teaching effectively are learned by doing. I couldn't understand why teachers would be judged on what they write vs. what they can actually do in the classroom.

Hi Johnnie... I received a 19 on my Cal TPA cycle 2 Math. I'm wondering if you ever help with looking over lessons to see what is needed by the scoring comments. I'm at a loss as of right now and not sure what direction to take.
@JohnnieWilson
@JohnnieWilson 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Stacey, you were so close- A couple things- First is that there should be someone in your program who is supposed to go over your score and advise you how to proceed. Most often this is to redo and resubmit some portion of your TPA with modifications and corrections (pay attention to where you received 2's or 1's on the rubrics. Sometimes, and this happened for one of my students this year- it was not graded well (don't get me started on TPAs and their grading). She resubmitted and received a passing score- this after I went through her TPA with her and found nothing that deserved a non-passing score. Let me know what areas you received the lowest scores on- you can target a resubmit on these. -J
