Another thing that Hades does well is the repetition of shapes/design symbolism/colors to make a design feel harmonious. I like that you reused the bark design/texture across the design to give it that feel, but I think you could have used some part of the flower skirt design elsewhere-- maybe the ears could have had more of a crescent moon shape, like the flower petals? Idk. and ofc it's not my art, it's yours. I do really like the use of lighter and more saturated colors around the face to draw focus there. I'm takin notes on that.

The only thing I would add to this video and to your own thoughts about color is that grey IS a color not simply a lack of color! Especially in a game with very vivid colors, having that muted color really exemplifies Moros design! Overall a great video and I'm excited to see more from you! Keep at it and you'll go far :3

I clicked because I am also obsessed with Hades 2 but I really loved the video and hope you keep up with both content creation and your character design career! The editing and motion was subtle but funny and the little touches were great, as well as seeing you being vulnerable over your design and the whole journey! Great work and I'll be looking forward to new vids~

This is called exploring variations not art style. Just because you tried different rendering methods it does not make an art style. Really want to try to master art styles look for mixed media and learn coloring techniques when you got tools under you're belt then you can tackle sketching different art styles and what you change. Example of this is "How about I make characters more rounded?" Lets look at some Western animations oh they use simple shapes, well how about I make them more angled or edgy look up final fantasy figurines, who drew them like that why they drew them like that and how I can gather more knowledge of artists that use interesting art styles. The list will go on and on. Until you experiment with lots of styles to gain experience then you can pick and chose what art style feel right for you. Ofc this is not advised if you got a following already cause what people want is you to improve, on your own art style keeping things consistent designs and not abandoning your style.

Such a cool video! Can I ask for clarification on what "the terminator between light and shadow" means? What is a "terminator" in this context? The colours on Moros to me seem to be isolated spots, which might be related to my poor grasp on light and shadow! Ps. I want to especially compliment you on your posing and shapes. The way you balance the interplay between a character's body and clothes to make a shape is very appealing!
@teisusillustration
@teisusillustration 29 күн бұрын
I wish I explained that a bit better in the video but the terminator is just where the light transitions to shadow (the edge between light and shadow, might be easier to understand). If you look at the art again, you'll see that the artist increased the saturation in this area, this makes the low saturation colours seem less lifeless and less "muddy". (I hope that made sense I'm really bad at explaining with just words) Thanks for the kind words as well !

Neat video! I love seeing breakdowns of character design. Also I've never played Hades but the characters look very cool, great choice to analyze. I feel like another important point for the color section is that the Hades characters' skin tones play a major role in their designs. Aphrodite has very pinkish skin, and with how little she's wearing I would consider that pink to be a dominant color in her design. Poseidon has a greenish undertone that supports the greens of his clothing, breaking up the intense colors with an analogous yet neutral tone. And Moros has a very blue-gray skin. If his art is grayscale that might not be as relevant, but I do see color in his sash and jewelry/armor, so I would argue that he simply has a low-saturation design, and his skin tone is part of that.
@teisusillustration
@teisusillustration 29 күн бұрын
I definitely should've went a bit more indepth during the colour section especially with the skin tones. I think I made the mistake of not applying that to my own design. Thanks for the feedback 💚

Hi Teisus at 4 min in the video you're talking about the grey layer to create greyscale image BUT theres a simper way of doing it - Put all your color layers into a folder click on the folder (just the folder) and use change layer color button (usually its the blue and white square thing) and click the arrow next to it and change the blue color to black and you have all your layers black and white and you can easly toggle it hope you can understand what I mean its really quick
@teisusillustration
@teisusillustration Ай бұрын
:0 I never knew about that feature, I will use that sometimes. I think using the grey sat. layer seems to work a bit better if I want to change the entire canvas to greyscale but this is useful for any other instance. Thank for the info!

I love your designs, but I noticed most of the colours you use are very desaturated. I think you could play around more with saturation (in highlights, hair, clothing patterns, maybe crystals - in the case of earth spirits) and it would really elevate your designs.
@teisusillustration
@teisusillustration Ай бұрын
Yea, I definitely have a bit of fear of going too saturated (leaving me with not enough saturation in some parts) but I'll keep this in mind on any future projects !
@Lootgoooblin
@Lootgoooblin Ай бұрын
@@teisusillustration It's hard to strike the right balance in saturation. I'm a former artist and I loved experimenting with saturation but I would often overdo it/make too many things too saturated. You have great drawing skills and I think that you can only get better from here, there's no need to fear :)

Good video, but in my own experience, I'd advise against getting too out of the box with techniques and the order of them. The way I see it, you want to bone up consistency and ingenuity, which have limited overlap, so you should do both with the relevant ratio and quantity for your purposes, and know which of those you're doing as you're doing it. The people that get really good do a lot of drills with repetition and very subtle intentional changes, and then there's current me, playing by ear and having fun with ideas, but without doing much active, focused comparison like this, and I don't think my work is consistent at all or nearly intentional enough. Regardless, I don't know, and that's a bit of a problem. This isn't all bad because when you constantly broaden the possibilities you can come up with different ways of looking at a project, but if you don't put in the contributions to a standard pattern, it gets way too hard to trust or recognize progress and you can get lost

I've literally watched more than 50 videos explaining how to achieve an artistic style because I'm in a big art crisis right now. Most of them massive contet creators on the plataform, that i also tried to watch it in the two languages that I understand (Portuguese, my mother tongue and english), but even then, I could never follow or fully understand what they wanted to say with their analyses, however, this wasn't what i felt with your video, i finally found someone that i could understand completaly, that had a simple and perfectly direct way of approching this subject. I'm very grateful that KZfaq recommended you, i will for sure stick around to see more of your amazing analyses!!

3:04 I'd say Moros' pose also makes sense because he is passive within his role as a deity. He does not do anything to create doom, but rather he comes to bear witness to manifestations of doom in the world, a silent observer acknowledging someone's final moments. He does not need to do anything, his mere presence is terrifying enough and often seen as a bad omen (including in the Crossroads, among allies) - which also aligns with what you said earlier about his silhouette alone looking ominous. 👀

As an beginner artist and an avid anime fan i hate how anime fans tries to animefy and downplay the designs of other media. However that doesn't mean there are no shitty character design in the western or the eastern media but Hades is just not one of them. Especially with the Hestia design people were complaining she was not a hot humuna humuna waifu goddess. But her being a grandma fits so well with her character if they just looked into it since she's a god that supposed to portray a homely and hospitality feeling.

I loved Hestia’s design! From my Cursory mythology knowledge I remember her being one of the oldest and most powerful olympians, despite her mostly keeping to herself and staying out of petty drama, so her being older and down to earth looking was so nice to see, and definitely a breath of fresh air in a sea of boring character designs in games.

I remember reading somewhere in a comment that anime "fans" are not really fans of art. And I couldn't help but feel like it's true. They rarely appreciate the intricacies of art design. They just like stuff that's either horny, flashy or shiny. It's sad cause in some way, the industry itself feeds these types of fans since every year you get hundreds of generic anime with designs purely made for fanservice.

When I first saw her, I knew it was Hestia before her name was revealed. She's the virgin Goddess of the Hearth and Home in the myths so her looking like a human fireplace and having a homely appearance and not caring about looking s*xy makes alot more sense. Though ngl, I thought they intentionally made her face look like a donkeys' cause that's her favorite animal, till I got a closer look and realized that's her bottom lip and not teeth 😂

Haha, that was a lot of fun to watch. And yeah, you definitely caught on quite a few good points on Jen's chara designs tips. Well done ! Another one I could add to make yours pop out even more is that pesky little 4th color (usually at the opposite end of the chroma wheel than the main one) Jen is using as highlights rims. It definitely helps give her characters a certain godly aura. Also, final pro tip, when doing shadows for your characters, rather than just using darker tones of your main colors, do the whole shadow shape in a rather desaturated slightly dark gray/purple on another layer on top of your main color layer (so not just for the skin, but for everything), then make it 30-40% transparent, and turn the shadow layer mode in Multiply. Enjoy !
@teisusillustration
@teisusillustration Ай бұрын
That process for the shadows is actually exactly what I did in this video, except I use hard light instead of multiply, but I appreciate the insight. I'm going to upload a video soon that'll show that process a bit more in depth
@jjstarrprod
@jjstarrprod Ай бұрын
Yeah, I realized that on second viewing, especially on her skin, but for some reason, the shadow on the clothes still look a bit too close in tone as the main color, and overall, it looks good, but still a bit flat. Maybe have a tad bit more contrast between the main color and the shadow (make the shadow darker, or the main brighter, since she's in broad daylight ?) might also be that her skin tone is a bit too rosy for a wood dryad type character, maybe make it look less fleshy more earthy ? I kinda feel both the green of her clothes and the rosiness of her skin are in competition with each other, whereas they should be complementing each other. Could also be a matter of her skin being more saturated than her clothes, while the green clothes should be the main attraction. Just a few pointers to try out. That and adding the random opposite colored rim lights might just do the trick. Other than that, it's a solid work already. Well done !
