Kind of off topic, but how do you know when each record was made? Most of the 78's I have don't have a date printed on them anywhere.

78s from 1900 to 1930s are sounding very well on my HMV 101 or my other one from the 1920s. 1940s 78s are different - some do - some do not. But 78s from the late 50s or early 60s are almost like vinyl (and some a r e vinyl). They are not made for mechanic reproduction. It sounds much too loud and destroys the records. I play every record on a record player of the same decade, 78 or vinyl. My oldest wind up portable is from 1925 and my latest turntable is from 1990s

I’ve played late 78s on the 101 before. The latest one I played was from 1958, with a half tone needle. It did well. I only really use soft tone now for all my 78s. And Pye probably put some grit or whatever in the vinyl mixture so it wouldn’t get ruined on older equipment. I tried a poor copy of a Platters Pye vinyl 78 on the 101 once and it made it through.

Have given this issue more thought as I've gained experience as a collector. Firstly, so many early machines seem to give little thought to tracking, important for efficient transfer of vibrations to the diaphragm. Often tone arms are short, to save materials perhaps? Soundbox weight is also an issue. For me, the main concern, re later 78's is compliance. Can a relatively stiff mechanics really follow those higher amplitude grooves. Less obvious may be the weight/inertia of the stylus bar mechanics. Can they really follow the higher frequencies found in later 78's? My view is, if you want to play later 78's acoustically, use an HMV Orthophonic 5A or 5B, with its lighter stylus bar, diapphragm, & high compliance. A soft tone needle will also improve sound & reduce wear.

Interesting video. The Lonnie Donagon records had multiple orrssings with the same publication date, so you can find vinyl 78s of songs that initially came out on shellac.

Probably the late 40s and 1950s records were really intended to be only played with an electric pickup, although they would play on an acoustic machine. You can get away with it by using a soft tone (thin) needle, and if your gramophone has means of reducing volume (such as doors that close over the horn) then that helps. But in my experience, those 'modern' records will be damaged by an acoustic machine, particularly at the high-pitch frequencies. You will notice that when playing the record again later, with an electric pickup.

I know Columbia records and some other record companies added a little something called “lam” I think but it for the record to not break quite easily as they added the lam in between two shellacs, but if it breaks, then it’s called a lam crack as the lam is exposed and it mostly happens when the record have a bad hairline crack or chipped of the record. There you can see the lam exposed. I do have some 78s made with vinyl but those are extremely rare but luckily my friend have a couple of them and he does not want them as he don’t exactly have a record player as he sold it away, so he gave them to me and I quite liked it, the sound is less surface noise than a shellac record! But there is some surface noise as it has seen better days. Those plastic 78s I got were all by RCA Victor and the artist for all the records is Tony Martin for some reason. These records are on the white label and it says not for sale, I have a feeling it’s a radio broadcast record meant for radio station back then. What do you think? Anyways in summary of ur video, just play your early 78s on a record player with special 3mil stylus and if you really want to play ur early 78s on ur gramophone, then find one worthless and somewhat you like on the machine, oh yeah and also play your extremely old 78s on a record player too as the gramophone needle might where off the groove easily due to their age. Anyways thanks!

Wind up gramophones were nearly unheard-of in the post war period in the US (other than old units). Electric pickups had come a long way and tonearms had become very light by like 1947 (Zenith made their snake head cartridge and stylus in 1947, I think). Then you have the 33 vs 45 (both vinyl microgroove) format war of the late 40s. Most 78s made in the US in the post war period were vinyl. In the US, anything recorded in about 1927 and forward were electrically recorded. Shortly after, electric reproducers were becoming common, though they were still pretty heavy with large horseshoe magnets. But even the mechanical reproducers were much better than the old ones. In the US, your best best is anything pressed before the war is reasonably safe with a wind up gramophone, but anything after the war is not.

i managed to resurrect an old rusty Czechoslovakian reproducer with a torn out and missing coupling screw by simply using hot melt glue to fasten the needle arm to the diaphragm. Compared to a pot metal HMV no.4 the sound quality is very similar, trumpets are harsher but pianoes sounds bettter on the checz. Which to me is pretty neat, considering the sound is carried over hot melt glue.

@Couchflyer-NY Yes, indeed. Either way around is possible. The design seems to have come in about 1917, in the US, and a few years later in the UK. The 2 factories certainly had differences of opinion in how to attach the governor weights. They may have varied on gear cutouts too. Thanks 😀 👍

I'd guess the 'Nipper' weight would be a 'tribute' piece, just based on the HMV design. I'd assume this due to the fact the HMV legend is without the apostrophe and the 'Nipper-like' dog isn't the same as the 'official' one either. I'd assume if it was an officially licenced one then the apostrophe and the dog would have been more in line with the official logo/design. It is a nice item all the same! The HMV record is an interesting find - especially as it has the mention of it appearing in catalogue #2 and not the general catalogue. I've not seen this before, so it may be something more limited than a 'usual' HMV 12 inch record! The needle box is a great find too. Originally a box of 200 with some still in it! I'd assume there aren't many of those about with some remaining, like that! Just my thoughts on this one.

Yes, the ornament I believe is based on a genuine one, with a bit of artistic license! The genuine ones I have seen pictures of also have quotes around the whole wording. The record I believe dates to 1915, though the recordings are from 1903! A bit of a surprise, that one. Tin I think must be uncommon. I haven't checked if the needles are used or not, though as they are loud or extra loud tone, I probably won't use them. Thanks 😀 👍

My view is that swarfega is probably only highly concentrated washing up liquid. I would probably clean with water and a couple of drops of washing up liquid give a rinse and dry off with a dry cloth always following the grooves. Also depending on the wood finish I would say unless there's a lot of oil light dusting is preferable. Some varnishes respond well to linseed oil but try a bit discretely first
@mrrgstuff
@mrrgstuff 3 күн бұрын
I'm not really sure what Swarfega is like, but it doesn't appear to be a soap, like washing up liquid. Having said that, it can be thinned with water and makes the cleaning process quicker. I do plan on trying washing up liquid as I know many people have had success with it. I also hope to do another experiment with wood and Swarfega. Again I don't know why, but it does seem quite effective at cleaning it up. Thanks 😀 👍

Would love to own placemats/coasters, especially as they're boxed & in great condition. 'Bell Disc' needle tin is an excellent & rare find. Wonder if the points are used, as is often the case. @@mrrgstuff Have seen G&T's of Dan Leno at £50-£100 at record fairs, but not sure of prices for late pressings. He was a music hall star, mainly before records were invented. He struggled with recording, saying: "I can't be funny into a funnel" He became mentally ill & died not long after his recordings were made. Believe there's a Wikipedia article on him.

You should design a turntable that uses a spring motor that can play at all 3 speeds, and have a horn mounting system thats not front mount so you can use an actual phonograph horn. You should also cut the needle so it's not as long and dull the tip, that might reduce wear and make it sound better.
