I've seen a lot of rock concerts but the best five I ever saw was NRBQ, late 70's through the eighties in SanFrancisco in small clubs and auditoriums. Terry, Al ,Joey and Tommy just blowing the roof off the place. I remember coming out of the Warfield hearing somebody say "Al Anderson was God". I.agree. It's a criminal oversight that they are not in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

One of the weird things about the record business is the cut out bin, which is where you would have found Live at Yankee Stadium, one of the greatest records ever made and certainly on my top 10 list. Someone at Mercury must have loved this record cause they made a lot of them but they did not sell well and ended up on the cut out lists where we could buy em for a buck and sell em for 299. The only problem was when you got someone to buy it and they would come back in lookin for something just as good and cheap and it did not exist. Great job with the retrospective, Bobby Rencher former owner of Phantasmagoria....

No one would be talking about Fleetwood Mac in 2024 if Stevie Nicks wasn’t in that band. The only reason they survived after Lindsey’s disastrous and selfish Tusk was because of Stevie’s star power and talent. He could play guitar until his fingers bleed but no one cares unless she is standing next to him. She is still selling out Madison Square Garden on her own at 76 years old. He got to sit home and practice playing all day while Stevie worked as a waitress to pay the bills. She’s the icon, he’s not ✌️

They all contributed, but I too have a high opinion of his work. A person could go through all the Fleetwood Mac albums and take out parts where he had a deciding influence, then see what is left. I haven't listened to his solo songs and probably should. In my estimation he has never had a bad note. He is a superb singer.

totaly agree, buckingham made mac what they are today not nicks, who i used too like a lot up until her solo 4 th album which turned her into just another boring singer, lindsey on the other hand has just made one superb album one after the other and will always be the man

I adored both those records when they came out. The feeling and atmosphere of them was so unique. Nothing else sounded like that. Very under produced. I think they lost something when they moved to the later more produced sound.

There's something about certain bands' first records. "Lions in My Own Garden (Exit Someone)" and this album were cheaply produced - and are all the better for it. The quality of the songwriting shines through.

i've seen, if not all, almost all BB documentary films out there. i suspected that this new one would be exactly what you are describing right now. mike has been trying to sell his version for years. they were all important and necessary, of course... but we all know who made things work in a progressive way. i will always appreciate kokomo... but will never be as good vibrations and before that. i'll be skipping this documentary for now. thanks for the honest feed.

Your review of this documentary confirmed my skepticism about it being told largely through Mike Love’s eyes. When it was being promoted in May 2024, Mike Love was the only original Beach Boy being interviewed about the documentary. Yeah, Bruce Johnson has also been interviewed about the documentary, but he was not an original member of the band. And yes, you are totally right: he HAS been bought! Mike Love is not the only original surviving member of The Beach Boys, regardless of the fact that he owns the legal rights to The Beach Boys band name and still performs the music live on tour. Love already wrote his memoir in 2016 and was able to tell his side of The Beach Boys’ story in full. But egomaniacs are never ever satisfied! There is no Beach Boys without Al Jardine and Brian Wilson. I think that Mike Love jumped at the opportunity to create this documentary because he knew that Brian Wilson couldn’t object to it or Mike due to Brian being diagnosed with dementia and being in a fragile state. And Al is not a Wilson nor a relative of the Wilsons I.e. Mike Love being Brian, Dennis and Carl’s cousin. And yes, I totally agree that The Beach Boys: An American Band is a far superior documentary. It is levelheaded, focuses on each band member’s individual special talents in addition to the group dynamic, and gives the viewer that authentic American family feeling and California cultural vibe all throughout. Since that documentary was made one year after Dennis died, one would have thought the new documentary could have spotlighted Carl due to his having passed 15 years later. I guess not. It seems like Mike Love is stopping at nothing to prove his false notion that he was the reason for The Beach Boys’ success. 😞

good stuff! the early mor records were much more marvin's desire than motown's, but i don't think he has the life experience to nail that material until 'vulnerable'. oddly enough i love the show tunes on 'moods of marvin gaye' (1965) - the variety between that and the excellent motown singles makes it my favourite of his 60s albums. can't argue with the top 4!

I need to re-watch it, because I didn't see the "re-writing of the story" probably because I knew that there was only one genius in the band, only one who wrote the music and created the harmonies. And as matter of fact, the lyrics of song that I like the most were not even written by Mike Love, but they have been written by Tony Asher

Great ranking 👍 My favourite period is the funky pre-Jaco/Alphonso Johnson era. Mysterious Traveller, Tale Spinning and Black Market would be my favourite out of all of them, when Jaco just joined the band and with Chester Thompson & Narada Michael Walden on drums. My favourite song by Weather Report would probably be Black Market as it’s just so funky & Wayne Shorter does one of his best solos on that song, it’s just incredible. I still lovethe era but for me the Jaco era can be a little mainstream but Heavy Weather is very good album. I also like the Mirislav Vitous era with Live In Tokyo being one of my favourite live albums of all time, anyway here’s my ranking. 1) Black Market (1976) 2) Tale Spinning (1975) 3) Live In Tokyo (1972) 4) Weather Report (1971) 5) Procession (1983) 6) Night Passage (1980) 7) Sweetnighter (1973) 8) I Sing The Body Electric (1972) 9) Heavy Weather (1977) 10) 8:30 (1979) 11) Mr Gone (1978) 13) Weather Report (1982) 14) Sporting Life (1985) 15) Domino Theory (1984) 16) This Is This (1986)

Nice! You have great taste. When I first moved to Atlanta in 84 or 85, I was listening to WRAS on my Sony Walkman, driving a rusted (West Virginia!) Datsun B210, "Green Isaac" came on and I was blown away. Those first 3 or 4 albums are still amazing. I think "Pearly Gates"is the saddest, most beautiful song ever written.

Nice work guys. I grew up on the other side of Philly from Todd. I was 18 in 76 went in the army and got turned on to Todd. I was always into way underground stuff but just missed out on Todd. Made up for it buy getting everything up to Ra. After 79 it was all punk and new wave since but still love Todd. The Todd album is my #1 album of all time. Strangely my name is on the poster under his nose, but not me. Mitchel with 1 L. Here is my Todd top 10. 1.Todd 2. Something Anything 3. Awats 4. Ra 5. Faithful 6. Initiation 7. Hermit of mink hollow 8. Oops wrong planet 9. Utopia 1974 10. Another live.

I haven't seen the documentary, but I have to wonder how many more media production companies out there are going to keep milking the subject of The Beach Boys? Hasn't there been enough video compilations done on the group over the past 60 years to satisfy the public?

California Girls has the most beautiful instrumental intro of any pop song I have ever heard but the lyric which follows is Mike Love at his worst:”I dig a French bikini…to the cutest girls in the world”. California wins the cute girl competition.
