Thanks. I wish I had some tips but I haven't. All I can say is the ancients never used electroforming or etching - all sculpture in miniature, so you might look into lost wax casting and cast two sides of your coin and solder them into one. - BR

Thanks for sharing!! Would this work with nickel silver alloy?
@BillRitchie4 ай бұрын
No, I do not think so because nickel silver, while it may accept the laser toner image, requires a strong etchant. I don't think ferric chloride will etch it. Nitric acid in some solution might, but I have no experience in etching nickel silver or any alloy like it.

@BillRitchie6 ай бұрын
Thank you, yes, it is cute and I love it! By the way, I watched your video and noticed the sound was weak, I could not hear. But I discovered the transcript could be switched on, and I read it. I copied it, but I didn't take time to format it, but here it is for your audience to read: we use copper cups right now is because it's considered the copper age it's soon to be the silver age and then we'll use silver cups but our ancestors used copper to hold water in the house overnight so that it would not grow mold or germs and would be safe to drink because copper has antibiotic properties okay the first thing you do when you're busting the water besides obtaining some water i feel like we should all have water okay it is water is very important water is important to grandmother moon grandmother moon has no water but grandmother moon causes the tithes and olives as well as the tithes in the ocean and those tides have emotional significance the first thing you do when you bless the water is you raise the water three times and asked as to the blessing of the great spirit or the universe and then put a little bit of water into the earth because the earth has given us the water and you offer the water to the north and to the east into the south and to the west and then you offer the water to the participants which i didn't bring paper cuts so you're out of it sorry um i'm just going to stand on the table.

I love this. I was also a printmaker and I’m also a Ritchie. This is a beautiful work of art. My Dad Jim Ritchie would have loved this. He was a master tradesman builder in Scotland before moving us all to New Zealand.

Hello again, Carole. I really appreciate your comment, and glad to hear you know printmaking. I would liked to have met your dad; we may have had a lot in common - even ancestors! If you locate our "round-the-world" video World Travel with the Ritchie Family, you see glimpse of Scotland. I like to brag about being a "MacRitchie." It looks like you are 21 hours ahead of us here in Seattle, so we could talk on the phone, they say. I'm looking into that. You say "was" a printmaker - but they say you get ink into your blood!

Do you still sell these presses Bill?
@BillRitchie8 ай бұрын
Hi again, no, unfortunately, we don't. Incidentally, two or three went to Australia. I have two finished ones, the're US$900 each. Incidentally, I am writing my autobiography, and it was a woman from New Zealand who suggested I make mini halfwood presses for sale! She was leaving the next day, however, and it was months before we started making them for sale. I have one of the early originals the owner brought back for me to sell - she is a jeweler and never had time to get into printmaking. It's never been used! I'm thinking of turning the design over to a big US etching press company to bring it back to life, but in a "green" form, less impactful on the environment, I think and good for home school. So many ideas, so little time!

@@BillRitchie Bill, why does the ferric chloride only etch when the plate is facing down?
@BillRitchie8 ай бұрын
@@Jimmy-sb3fc The chemical reaction results in a precipetrate, if the plate is upside down or vertical, if a "bubbler"" keeps the action going, the preciptrate leaves. It left alone, face up, it clogs the etching and stagnates, stopping the etching.

The first ones, about 40 of them all sold, all gone, at $125 to to $400. I have email addresses,, I think, in case I find someone like you who would get in touch. Tell me your city/country, maybe there would be one near you. My website. Https://www.emeraldaworks.com has free flipbooks, and the Halfwood Press Encyclopedia shows a few in collections along with the Halfwoods. Tomorrow I will talk to Tom Conrad, who bought one and I'll ask if he will sell his to you.

Yes Bill primary education always used nursery rhymes and you are there again. Print does matter. The Diamond Sutra the oldest surviving printed book in the world. Made in 868 AD. The Bible also when it was printed revolutionised literacy education and learning. With that Biblical text came the numerous engravings which reached people . A visual communication that today returns and almost eclipses the printed word.
