An underpainting is a crucial element in the process of building depth and detail in your painting. In my process an underpainting tends to be more than just blocking in areas of colour and shapes, although this is, of course, where you want to start - finding the approximate colour tones and all the different shapes created by the way light falls on the subject. But it is also a chance to start building texture with your brushstrokes. Once this layer dries the texture will have an impact on subsequent layers, building complexity and a sense of depth in the coat. Hope this was helpful - don’t forget to like and subscribe! 😍🙌

3 tips to building realism in a tiny bird painting…. 1. Use a variety of different colours in multiple layers to build depth and transparency. 2. In each subsequent layer work towards your brighest tones, applying over darker tones in the touch-dry previous layer. 3. Blur changes of tone in soft feathers by using a wet-n-wet technique. Bonus tip! - Use a small dagger brush to create fluffy feathers over a darker tone beneath. And lastly - be patient and work thru the ugly stages! 🙌. Three little swallows - what would you call them?
@nikkicarrartist2 ай бұрын
Every day in summer around 5 o’clock I get the loviest play of sunlight through the high windows of my studio. It’s so delightful to see it fall across my work - although it does make it hard to see the colours correctly, so I usually just down tools and appreciate the view! 🌟P.S I’m going to be making a big announcement soon about an online course - if you want to make sure you catch it, drop the word ‘yes’ in the comments below🌟

Today I get to bring back to life all those patches that have dried dull. I do this by ‘oiling -out’ with a mixture of solvent and an oily painting medium. This adds back the oil content to those patches that need it most and evens out the sheen across the painting. It really is effective at bringing all those dark and dull areas back to life and showing all the colour variations happening in there. I’m using a brush this time rather than a soft cloth because I want to keep it away from the gold leaf. After about 10 minutes I’ll wipe away any excess oil still sitting on the surface. Ask me in the comments below if you’re curious about this process….. P.s. Don't forget to hit like and subscribe if you found this video useful! 😍

Great video! How long do you wait to varnish a painting, after oiling out?

A refining layer is all about glazing with transparent pigments to adjust and unify colour tones, deepen shadows and enhance detail with thin applications of paint. I tend to use Liquin original to thin my paint to create a transparent glaze but Gamblin galkyd also works well. Both of these mediums will allow the glaze application to be touch dry in about 24hrs while maintaining the ‘fat over lean’ principle for oil painting. What’s your favourite medium to use for glazing?

It’s finished! The last bit of gold leaf has been added and I’m going to try very hard not to ‘improve’ it any more! 🤞 I know I can’t be the only one but I find it very difficult not to tweak a painting even though I’ve declared it finished 🤦🏻♀️ Who else does this when you know in your heart that you should leave it alone? 😂

I will be doing more in the near future however - if you would like to keep an eye out and get first notification you can join my private list (‘Studio Insiders’) here: www.nikkicarr.co.uk/get-on-the-invite-list. You can also commission them with a particular subject of course. Give me a shout if you have any questions. 😊🙌

Hmmm - my heart is longing to do some more of these little beauties. What do you think? 😊
@nikkicarrartist3 ай бұрын
The best part! I had so many questions from you guys about the varnish that I used for these mini paintings. I used Gamvar gloss which gave the paintings a glass-like finish. This doesn’t usually happen on canvas so much, but a wood panel is much smoother so the varnish is only picking up the texture of the paint itself. Plus, the varnish is odourless so win, win! I also used my trusty Handover brush (699 020) which is really soft and not too long which means it doesn’t soak up too much varnish. Oh, and one last tip - don’t shake the bottle immediately before using or you’ll end up with lots of air bubbles when you pour it out! 🤦🏻♀️ Hope this helps - happy varnishing! 😁
