I found the trickster series to be the best I found the trickster series to be the best of all universe I found the trickster series to be the best of all universe though I have hopes for the numare chronicles. On the other handOnce I got to high school the Lioness books lost there appeal.

I feel it's supposed to be a more realistic take on the options a woman of her standing had during that time. So it's supposed to be kinda depressing. Our views of romance are different than what it was during those times. Back then it feels like romance is a luxury and people made best of whatver situation they had and the cards theg were dealt.

The book would have been good if it was fast paced. First 250 pages r boring.

I went into a Coles last week after submitting my application online. I browsed the store until other customers left, then I introduced myself to the manager on shift. I must've made a good impression because I have an interview tomorrow, so maybe it was just like that during the height of Covid?

Really late to comment but I just had to say that you did a fantastic job on this huge project, Emily. I enjoyed this so very much. For my two cents, I prefer biographies and autobiographies shelved by the person being written about and not the person who did the writing. I approach the biography section of a book store and I’m not looking for an author; I’m looking for the subject of the book because I don’t know the name of the author (unless it’s Doris Kearns Goodwin), and I want all the Abraham Lincoln books shelved together. Just me and never mind me. Again, a truly great effort that has really paid off. Your plants are so healthy!

My first Tamora Pierce series was The Circle of Magic. I loved the idea that magic was worked through everyday things. Then I read The Song Of The Lioness. Favorite characters are Tris and Alanna.

The translator isn’t broken. She is the wrong side of the great vowel shift so the words aren’t sounding right. That doesn’t come across in the written form. Chaucer records people at that time not understanding one another because their language is a different side of the shift. Also I think you are failing to grasp the fragilities of the mobile communications network. The wired phone network is falling apart because the situation has caused it to run out of bandwidth. Any mobile network is long since toast.

one point on the crow, although I think your points on the general symbolism are more likely: in The Stand, Flagg controls crows and seems able to shapeshift into or to possess them. Considering Walter is actually not really very present in the books I doubt this is the reason for the crow, but it’s an extra point of thought.

here's the deal - if you wanna do the whole "in-store vs. online pricing" in order to get yourself fired, stop placing the blame on customers for thinking it's ridiculous you'll argue it's cheaper to make us wait an hour for you to physically pick the item and bring it to the till for us to pick up that same day. Or, start advertising your in-store prices vs. online. Thank you.

I’m very disappointed that you haven’t reread the both Beka Cooper’s books and Aly’s books. In my opinion, I really believe that Aly’s books are the best in terms of cultural representation and honest portrayals of colonialism and racism as a weapon against indigenous people that are still relevant today. Beka’s books are not only a welcome view into the “common” world of Tortall, but I love how they deal with situations that are are so relevant to our society today. I actually read Trickster’s Choice as the first book in the Tortall universe I ever read- I had already read all of the Circle of Magic and the Circle Opens books, and my sister bought me Tricksters Choice because she knew I liked Tammy’s books.

Emily Cait -- there is no relationship between the novel and your commentary. You have no comprehension of the story you read.

I am sad I couldn't make the last Live as I was stuck in a meeting at work! I have really enjoyed this book club this year, loved the theme and found a new favourite book in White is for Witching! I would love to revisit the theme in the future and maybe do a part 2 of haunted houses... there seem to be so many out there! I really enjoyed Mexican Gothic although I have to admit with all of the hype I think I was hoping for a 5 star and it didn't quite get there for me. It was a great one to end on though and like most of the books from this year I am looking forward to doing a re-read 🙂
@EmilyCait6 ай бұрын
I'm so glad you enjoyed following along with the book club this year! I had a lot of fun with it too and would love to do a part two -- there are SO MANY haunted house books. We could definitely keep going and exploring. I really enjoyed the books in translation. They were not always a good fit, but fun to read. Mexican Gothic does have a lot of hype. I think I read it for the first time at the right time, as the hype was building. It worked out really well as the book end for this year of reading. Happy New Year! :)

If you haven't already, I highly recommend Stephen King's "On Writing," it's his memoir on his writing up until the 90s? I want to say that it definitely provides a comprehensive explanation of the composition of his novels, and I find it to still translate to his recent writings, Billy Summers (my personal King book), Fairy Tale, 11/23/63 and so on. He also explains why there was such a fundamental shift in language and overall genre (after 1987). And also you have peaked my interest on Her Majesty- will for sure get that soon.

She Who Became the Sun is the first that comes to mind. It sounded like something I would like and it was so loved overall by people who like similar things to me. I really liked the first part, and then the second part just fell flat to the point where I DNFed as I jsut couldn't care anymore. Part was probably me thinking it was more fantasy than historical fiction. The rest was the flow of the story and characters. :D
