What holds the points open or closed?
@Castlebridge-00
@Castlebridge-00 Ай бұрын
Hi Donald, the points are Peco code 100 and they are made with a small spring that keeps the point blade tight to the rail when it is open or closed. I have done nothing with the point, it is as it was, straight out of the box. I hope this helps. Barry.Devon

Hi Barry, thanks for sharing. In this day and age of modern, expensive technology for model railway point control your simple but very effective way of point control has given me exactly what I need, massive thanks.

Yes creating curved platforms as opposed to straight platforms is overwhelmingly difficult to say the least, but they do look so much better than boring old straight platforms. I used the same technique that you used by holding a pencil beside my longest carriage and drawing a line on my baseboard to indicate the position of the platform edging. I used Peco NB-26 - brick type edging. I'm running N scale. Looks fantastic. The main issue with model railway curved platforms is generally most curves are reasonably tight due to space limitations, so depending on the curve you are going to have the centre of the carriage nice and close to the platform with both carriage ends a lot further away OR if the curve is the other way, you end up with both ends of the carriage nice and close but the centre of the carriage a lot further away. IMHO there is nothing worse than having your train stop at a platform and seeing your trains too far back from the platform edge.

Yes, that is the one I meant. In a year or so, (depending on the way life demands) I have a goods yard with 8 points on the plan. I hope to use a thin tube from household spray bottles when they are finished, glued to the top of the baseboard with a wire running in it, turned up at the end through the point. That means the rod will be in place as the point is fixed to the board. In a goods yard, it will be easy to hide the plastic tube and the other end, the wire bent as before to form a handle. That will take a bit of controlling by me to avoid a derailment, but enjoyable. Barry.Devon

G`day Barry, Glad to hear you`ve overcome some adversity in the last couple of years. The shed situation was terrible and those ants made a right mess of the timber work. I`m glad you blasted them with every toxic chemical known to man, and hopefully those treatments will drive them away. Your repairs have come up a treat and you`ve taken advantage of the situation to improve upon what you had before. The effort you`ve gone to will certainly be worth it in the end. Hi Darren, glad you liked the video and layout. Your Granddad, a Black 5 driver..... wow, impressed you must be proud seeing as the great Black 5's were the backbone and rescuers of those great railway times. What was his name? The cliff wall is real slate rock as used to build devon stone walls and cladding to many Devon houses. As I am in the builder's merchant trade (now recently, almost retired, just doing one day a week for the local branch) we use a quarry near Tavistock called Yennadon. I came across a few lumps and cut them down with a coal chisel etc. There is a video on cutting them and making the wall..........Barry

G`day Barry, Sounds like a gear box problem to me mate. I am not familiar with the gear train in this model, however if it is a worm drive on the motor shaft connecting to a gear on the axle, it`s possible the worm is in the wrong position on the motor shaft and not connecting properly with the gear. On the other hand, the gear itself may not be meshing correctly with the worm. Either way........it`s a pain to rectify and should not be necessary on a model that is certified OK at the factory. Send it back to Bachmann with a carefully worded irate letter. Good luck Cheers Gormo
